Making Movies

With the inclusion of Windows Movie Maker (WMM) in Windows XP and Windows Me, Microsoft follows Apple and its polished iMovie software into the world of consumer-grade digital video editing. But WMM is a very basic package aimed at beginners and, as such, probably won't offer much competition to high-end packages such as Adobe Premier. On the other hand, WMM's low bar of entry makes it ideal for getting your feet wet in the exciting—but confusing—world of digital video.

First, you need some hardware. This includes a video source—such as a camcorder, VCR, or DVD player, and a way to connect that source to the computer. The connection could be a USB dongle, such as Belkin's excellent Video Bus II, an IEEE-1394 (aka iLink or FireWire) card for a digital camera, a video card with video capture capabilities (ATI's Radeon is a good example), or a dedicated capture card or PCI card solution, such as the highly recommended Dazzle Digital Video Creator II. This last device is particularly interesting if you use an analog video source such as 8mm or VHS.

Regardless of the hardware you use, the goal is to capture some type of video onto the computer's hard drive and possibly edit that video into a finished movie you can send via email, post to the Web, or archive on a CD-ROM. This is where WMM enters the picture, and if you're not a video professional, this tool is ideal. It's easy to use, offers a relatively basic set of features, and, best of all, is included free with Windows. It has limitations, of course. WMM is limited to 320 x 240 resolution, too small for output to VHS.

But any video-editing package will bring some overhead along with it, and WMM is no exception. So before you get started, you should learn the language of video editing, WMM-style.

The Lingo In WMM parlance, the audio and video you're recording from the video source is considered source material. It can be a home movie from a camcorder, a VHS tape, a live TV show, an audio tape, or something similar. WMM uses audio/video capture hardware to import a source file from the video source. This file, which is stored locally on your hard drive, might be considered raw data because it's essentially unchanged from the original. But with WMM, you can take this raw source file, edit it, and combine it with other source files to create a finished movie. A WMM movie can consist of any combination of still images, audio, and video and is stored in a Windows Media format (Windows Media Audio—WMA or Windows Media Video—WMV). However, WMM can import a variety of media-format source files, including MP3 audio and MPG video. If you're interested in producing a movie in a different format (such as MPG), you need to use a different tool, such as Adobe Premier.

The WMM UI, which Figure 1 shows, is relatively straightforward and has three primary areas: collections, monitor, and workspace. You use the collections area to organize the still images, audio, and video that you combine to make finished movies. The monitor section lets you view video segments using a standard array of controls. And you edit your final movie in the workspace area at the bottom of the window. You can drag source files into this area to visually construct the movie, which you can display in storyboard or timeline format. We'll explore both formats in part two of this look at WMM.

WMM also lets you work with a variety of file types. WMM organizes each movie you create as a project (.mswmm). A project is analogous, vaguely, to a document in Microsoft Word. Specifically, a WMM project describes the various source files WMM uses to create a movie. After you've completed your project, you can also save it as a standalone movie file (.wmv) or audio file (.wma) that others can view or hear using Windows Media Player (WMP). WMM also has a collections file that contains information about your clip collections. Each time you import or record a video source, WMM breaks down the resulting source file into smaller clips and stores them in named collections within your project.

Importing and Editing
Next, let’s look at how you can use WMM to record video and audio in WMM; the techniques apply to the version of WMM found in both Windows XP and Windows Me.

The first step is to connect an external video source to your PC. (This example uses an analog camcorder and Belkin's USB-based Video Bus II.) The hardware details are relatively unimportant; whatever video source you use and however you connect it to your PC, you need to set up WMM so it knows to grab its audio and video from that source.

To set up WMM, launch the software and choose New, Project from the file menu to make sure you're working with a clean slate. Click Record to bring up the Record dialog box, where you can determine whether you're recording audio, video, or both; which device(s) you'll use; and other options. Make sure you select audio and video as the Record type and then choose the correct device (Video Bus II Audio for audio and Video Bus II Video for video).

In the Record dialog box, the Setting drop-down list will determine the recorded clip's quality. The options are based on the audio and video devices you select. Microsoft has created pre-set quality profiles (such as Video for Web servers—28.8 Kbps—and Video for Broadband NTSC—768 Kbps), but you can choose other if you want to fine-tune the results. In general, I like to choose the highest quality audio and video (through other—I like the source material to be of the highest possible quality). Later on, after you combine clips and other files and want to output final productions for various purposes (e.g., Web or email), you can choose to limit the quality. But it's good to start off with the best you can get.

After everything is set up correctly, press play on the camcorder, then press the Record button in the Record dialog box. You'll see the video playing in a preview window, and you can press the Stop button when you're finished recording. You don't have to worry about editing the source material; just grab the raw material with the understanding that you'll edit it into something more professional later.

When you press Stop, the Record dialog box closes, and WMM generates clips of your movie. Clips are logical sections of audio or, in this case, video that WMM automatically generates at specific break points; for video, this break point might be a scene change. The number of clips your video source generates depends on the video. WMM stores these clips in a new collection, which you can name—perhaps something such as First raw video source. WMM will ask you to save this source file to your hard disk, in My Videos by default.

You can now drag clips into the WMM Workspace—the area at the bottom of the screen that looks like a filmstrip. The Workspace displays in two modes: Storyboard (the default) or Timeline. The Storyboard view is the simpler of the two; it reserves one cell for each clip. You can drag the clips into the Workspace one at a time. If you want all the clips, just click the Collections area, press CTRL+A, and drag the clips into the Workspace.

Now you can play individual clips in the Preview window (select one and press the Play control under the Preview window) or play the entire set of clips in chronological order (Play Entire Storyboard/Timeline from the Play menu) to see how the raw footage looks. Before you begin to edit—where you add titles, wipes, and overdubbed audio—you should save your project. Remember that a WMM project consists of one or more collections. Your first (and only) collection currently consists of a single raw source file that WMM logically divides into clips. To save the project, select Save Project As from the File menu, choose a location for the project file, and give it a name. That's all there is to it.

Let's review the files you generated during this process. You saved the raw video footage as a Windows Media Video 8 (WMV 8) file. And you saved the WMM Project file with a MSWMM extension. The MSWMM file simply contains links to the source video(s) you worked with, the clips it generated, and the sequence of clips stored in the Workspace. In the future, you'll also add other file types, such as Windows Media Audio 8 (WMA 8) and bitmap files, to the project.

If you plan to work with a lot of videos, you might want to take a moment to consider file management. It's probably a good idea to create a subfolder for each project under My Videos so you can keep your projects and their related files separate from each other.

Editing Your Movie
Now I'll show you how to edit your video masterpiece into something you can show family and friends, and you'll discover how WMM creates videos of vastly differing qualities and file sizes. In this example, we'll be working with analog video captured with a USB-based dongle, which limits the resolution to 320 x 240. This resolution is fine for Web- and email-based video work. For a higher-resolution, fully digital production, you'll need a digital-video camcorder, a Firewire interface, and the version of Windows Movie Maker in Windows XP (the version in Windows Me is limited to 320 x 240 resolution regardless of the video source). But USB, any old analog video source, and either version of WMM are suitable for our work. The point is to get comfortable with the tools.

When you load WMM, be sure to load the project you created last time; even though the video clips and collections you previously created will load automatically, you'll lose any work you did in the Timeline/Storyboard area if you don't load the project. Now drag any clips you want in the final version of your video down to the Workspace area at the bottom of the screen. Click View, then Timeline to change the Workspace to Timeline view, as Figure 2 shows. This process gives you a time-based visual that's easier to work with when you want to make cuts and add titles and transitions.

Cutting Your Video
You need to cut, or crop, the raw video footage you previously recorded so that you retain only the parts you want. For this example, you'll crop footage from the beginning and end of the video, but you can go back and trim video wherever you like.

At the top of the Storyboard, you'll see a notched timeline, marked off in 10-second increments. If you click in this area, you can make the video monitor jump to specific frames in the project. First you need to find the very first second of video that will make it into the final movie. As you click in the Storyboard view, the cursor will change into a small up-arrow cursor and a vertical line will appear that delimits the point where you'll cut the video. After you find the point where you'd like the video to begin, choose Clip, then Set Start Trim Point, as Figure 3 shows, to delete the footage before that point.

Now perform the same task for the end point. When you find the correct point, choose Clip, then Set End Trim Point. To see the video as it now stands in its entirety, choose Play, then Play Entire Storyboard/Timeline.

Adding a Title
Every home movie deserves a good title. And although it isn't the most professional tool in the world, Windows has a perfectly workable solution: Microsoft Paint. Fire up Paint and create a bitmap image with a white background, using the Text tool to create a title (such as My First Home Movie). The trick is make sure that the image you create is the same resolution as the movie's final output; otherwise, you might see some ugly stretching in the final movie.

For our purposes, the resolution of the final video (and thus the title) is 320 x 240. Before you do anything else in Paint, type CTRL+E and set the resolution accordingly. Then create a title and save it into the same folder where your WMM project resides (hopefully somewhere under My Videos in My Documents). In this example, we'll call it title.bmp.

Now go back to WMM and choose Import from the File menu. Then navigate to the proper directory and choose title.bmp, which WMM will add to the list of clips in the current collection. You can drag this title down to the beginning of the Storyboard, before the video footage. By default, this process creates a title that sits onscreen for 5 seconds. If you choose Play, then Play Entire Storyboard/Timeline from the WMM menu, you can see how this looks, as Figure 4 shows.

Adding a Transition
The title works, but the transition from the title to the beginning of the video is rather jarring. You can add a cross-fade transition, which is the only type of transition WMM supports, to make this look better (more powerful products such as Adobe Premiere and Apple iMovie, which is Mac-only, support more diverse transitions).

Although the term cross-fade transition might seem technical, you already know what it is. This is the type of transition that occurs when the video and audio from one scene fade into the next. In WMM, you achieve a transition by simply dragging one clip in the Timeline into the clip next to it. By watching the time ticker at the top of the Timeline, you can control the length of time the fade lasts and where it begins in one clip and ends in the next.

Now you have a static title and a video segment, and you want to fade them into each other so that the title fades out as the video begins. First, click the Zoom In icon next to the Timeline to make it easier to see. Then select the video clip directly to the right of the title in the Timeline, then drag it to the left. As you do so, watch the time ticker to determine how far to drag it. For this first experiment, you might try dragging it 2 or 3 seconds to the left, so that it visually overlaps the title in the Timeline, as Figure 5 shows.

Choose Play, then Play Entire Storyboard/Timeline from the WMM menu. This time, the title will fade into the video—a smoother and more professional transition. You might also consider creating an end title and fading the end of the video segment into it. And here's a little trick: You can create black or white blank images and use them as transitions between two video clips. Experiment and you'll find that even a simple video tool like WMM is surprisingly powerful.

Saving the Movie
Now it's time to save the movie in a format you can view on the Web or send via email. You might want to save the movie a few times in different formats to see how the different settings affect the final product. To save the movie, click the cunningly named Save Movie button, which displays the Save Movie dialog box. You can choose a quality-setting template (Low quality, Medium quality, or High quality) or choose Other, then pick a Profile setting. What you see will vary from OS to OS; in Windows XP, WMM has more choices than it does in Windows Me. For now, just choose High Quality. Figure 6 shows the Save Movie dialog box.

In the Display information section of the dialog box, fill out the Title and other information, then click Save. WMM will prompt you to choose a location and a file name. Then the software will create your final movie and ask whether you'd like to watch it in Windows Media Player (WMP). Sit back and enjoy!

How do you convert MSWMM files to AVI or any other common readable formats?

Thanks :^)

Kat -March 12, 2004

You can't. .mswmm is a container file. You must open .mswmm with Windows Movie Maker save as .wmv file then you can convert it to whatever format you like.

You can't convert a .mswmm It is a container file. You must open .mswmm with Windows Movie Maker save as .wmv file then you can convert it to whatever format you like.

<u><a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/moviemaker/downloads/moviemaker2.asp" class="body">Microsoft Movie Maker</a></u>

Only ME and XP support Windows Movie Maker. If you don't have ME or XP ask someone who does to take your .mswmm - save as .wmv - and return. THEN, You can use any one of the hundreds of programs available to convert the .wmv to avi, mpg, asf, divx, dvd, or whatever freakin format you want.</b>

Or, I will do it for you for a small fee. @ http://www.streetsie.com/forum

hiya, I'm just another-one who would like to know how to convert mswmm to dvd, mpeg or something so that i can watch it on my dvd player. thanks for your help if it possibble

Shane misell -June 13, 2004

IDIOTS... just open it up in windows movie maker and instead of doing "Save Profect File" scroll your little mouse-cursor down a few more millimeters and get to "Save Movie File"... It will then ask you all of the different features you want and will save it as a .wmv (windows media video file). from there it should be the easiest thing you ever do in your life to convert it to .avi (i don't see why you would want to though) or .mpg

Hall Effect -June 20, 2004

I think the biggest misunderstanding is that most people don't have access to windows movie maker. So here they are with a mswmm file and no way to open or view it. And if you are running windows 2000 you can't run mm. so as croc said, find someone that has xp and mm and have them resave it for you.

mike -June 24, 2004

Thanks to y'all for the answers, as so many others, this is a difficult concept to understand. Saving a file that cannot be opened anywhere else. Who thinks of thises things?

Save video file from within Movie Maker: This will create a .WMV file. Get STOIK VIDEO CONVERTER (http://www.stoik.com) and then convert .WMV to .AVI. Plain..Simple..DONE.

Hey everyone the comment above is correct save your moviemaker file undre the save movie file, then if your sharing or not save as for a web page and then you get options after that it automatically saves as a WMA file

It's really starting to piss me off.. I have forty gigs free, iv'e tried to save it in "My Documents", my own folder, on a disk, and even on the desktop. And my source files are still there. How do you convert MSWMM to mpeg, or avi. Can you please e-mail me the infomation.

Thanks Terry

Terry -November 30, 2004

There is no reason to convert MSWMM to mpeg or any other file type all you must do is choose to save movie file in the file menu and it will give you some options to save it as most are WMV i believe either way all you need is a WMV to DVD or whatever format you need

Andrew -November 30, 2004

Everyone seems to have the same question. How do you convert from MSWMM to avi or MPEG so you can burn onto DVD? Where do you find the answer to this question?

Dearne -December 4, 2004

<B>Freakin Idiots !! Read This</B>

You can't convert a MSWMM. It is a container file. You must open the MSWMM file with Windows Movie Maker THEN save as A WMV file. Then you can convert it to whatever format you like. First update to the latest <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/moviemaker/downloads/moviemaker2.asp">Microsoft Movie Maker 2.1</A>

Goto: Start> All Programs> Accessories> Entertainment> Windows Movie Maker File> Open Project> Locate the WSWMM> Open Drag the clip/s onto the storyboard line File> Save movie file> My Computer> Enter movie name & folder to save to Check 'Other settings'> Any option you chose from the drop box will save as a WMV except for "DV-AVI (PAL)" it will save as AVI

Only ME and XP support Windows Movie Maker. If you don't have ME or XP ask someone who does to take your MSWMM - save as a WMV - and return. THEN, You can use any one of the hundreds of free programs available to convert the wmv to avi, mpg, asf, divx, dvd, or whatever freakin format you want.</B>

If you are totally lost, I can do it for you. <A HREF="http://www.streetsie.com/forum"</A> Register and post your question in "Image Works".

Croc Hunter -December 7, 2004

Can you list some of the "hundreds of free programs" that convert WMV files? I saw a link to one above, but I is not working for me. Please tell me where I can find these free programs.

EHH HOSER -December 15, 2004

hi, I have read all of the above carefully ! I have tried and tried to save my WMM file as a WMV instead of a MSWMM, but when you goto 'save as' you don't have any other options to choose from ??? can anyone help me anymore - has anyone got to the final VCD/SVCD/DVD stage yet ?? thanks for any help anyone can give me !!

Corrine -December 20, 2004

OK .... I've done it, you can too here goes for anyone else who needs some assistance ..... I purchased Nero 6.6/Nero Express 2-se for a fiver from ebay ! Goto 'save movie file...' (not save as) then click on 'the web' to save as a web page, you won't actually go that far - but that function will save it as a WMV instead of a MSWMM, then open nero, burn VCD and Nero will do the rest and convert it for you to VCD/DVD format, my VCD worked great - so I am sure DVD's will work too! good luck & merry christmas x

Amjad -February 6, 2005

Thanks to croc hunter I got my mswmm file to convert to a wmv file and found a free converter program to convert the file to avi or mpeg. I tried to then load it into Click to DVD and got an error message. Unfortunately it did not give me a reason why it wouldn't work, it just wouldn't. Any ideas of what I can do now? I made a movie in click to dvd but couldn't find a way to run credits at the end. That's what I used movie maker for otherwise I would not have done this on two different programs.

Bonnie -February 13, 2005

Bonnie: You can just burn the WMV or MPEG (MPG) movie file onto your DVD disc or a CD-Rom disc. Most newer DVD players will support and play those formats as well as JPG images as a slideshow. To play on your computer a CD drive can't burn or play a DVD disc. A DVD drive will burn/play both DVD and CD disc's though.

You can reach me at http://www.streetsie.com/forum if you need help.

PS. Windows Movie Maker itself can save as AVI. Goto: File> Save movie file> My Computer> Enter movie name & folder to save to Check 'Other settings'> "DV-AVI (PAL)" it will save in the huge filesize AVI format.

Hey Croc Hunny,

You seem to be the only bright one here.

I have read all your comments about mswmm to avi.. yadda. But there is no comments for Swf or flash players. Is there anyway to combine swf and mswmm?

Suggestions?

MizBlondy -April 30, 2005

MizBlondy my love,

Macromedia Flash can import wmv avi mpg and many other files. So just use Windows Movie Maker and save as a wmv movie file as I explained above. Open Flash and goto File> Import. Locate your wmv and it's that easy.

CrocHunter -April 30, 2005

Hi. I made a movie on windows movie maker and I cant get it to burn on a dvd. It burns but it wont play in a dvd player. Can anyone help me figure this out before mothers day. Help me Courtney

Courtney -May 1, 2005

Courtney,

Sounds like your DVD player is not wmv compatible. Look on the front or in the manual to see which formats are supported. Most will play mpg mpeg so use one of the programs I mentioned above and convert your wmv to mpg then burn.

CrocHunter -May 1, 2005

Hey croc how do i fix that 'Windows Movie Makercannot save the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available, that the saving location is still available, and that there is enough free disk space available, and then try again." IT WONT SAVE iv checked it all even with small clips got any ideas PLZ!!

Michael -May 2, 2005

Michael,

Be sure you drag you movie down onto the Storyboard/Timeline before you goto save it. If you can't see the Storyboard goto> View> Storyboard and also try playing it to verify the source files are there.

Then to save it goto> File> Save movie file> click 'My Computer' and next> Enter a name for your movie & click 'browse' to locate a folder on your computer to save to and click next. Check mark 'Other settings'> and choose the quality you want then click next.

If you still get the error then your source files are stuffed.

CrocHunter -May 3, 2005

yeah i did all that and it still doesnt work and the files arnt stufft cause i tried it with everythin its dodge

Michael -May 5, 2005

Michael,

Try updating to the latest Win Movie Maker 2.1 http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx You must be doing one of the steps wrong. How big is the source file?. And what format is it?. ie: .mswmm .mpg .asx ?. If it's not to huge sign-up here http://www.streetsie.com/forum and I'll try saving it for you.

CrocHunter -May 5, 2005

syafiq -June 21, 2005

I could really use some help. I have some files that I have downloaded from a Torrent site. I want to edit these file together but the only editing program that I have found that will open it and play it is Windows Movie Maker. I am very unfamiliar with this program because I use Pinnacle Studio 8. I have saved some of the files but I could only save it as a MSWMM. I don't have any idea how to convert it back to AVI. I have read all of these posts but when I try to save it within WMM it always give me an error message....the one about can't save this file....yadda yadda yadda. I have also read how to fix this but honestly I don't understand. I am really desperate. I hope someone will have mercy on me and help me with this project. Thanks in advance.

But on my computer i can get it into windows movie maker but the movie has "X's" all over it and it won't play. Please, tell me how to convert it into any other type of file. Please...

How do your convert MSWMM files to >MPEG or what ever ???????????????????????

Dave -July 4, 2005

Hey dumbasses, When you're saving your movie press save as and type in the filetype you want instead of MSWMM. FI FAEN You ******* suck my donkey's balls.

VIkin -July 10, 2005

Oh my god, I've lost the will to live reading this page, are all you humans quite as stupid as the ones posting on this page? FFS I'm out of here

The Doctor -July 10, 2005

The reason it has X's is because you saved all your files on your old hard drive and your new hard drive does not contain the files movie maker needs to create the images. Always save your incompleted files on some cd-rw's, 'cause you can always write over them as you progress. Also if you replace the missing files the X's dissappear.

jammer -July 23, 2005

I know Vlkin thinks we're "dumbasses" for not being to convert MSWMM in to MPEG but the method suggested doesn't work. I don't get the option to save as anything other than a MSWMM file when the dialogue box opens. No matter what I try, I cannot save as MPEG. As such, with my DVD player not having Microsoft software, I cannot play saved movies anywhere else but my PC.

Hello all.... I think I get something right.want to share with u... I click on the right hand side of WMM, I click "send in email", and after that it showed "played movie" or save a copy to mycomputer". Then I clicked play movie. I played with winamp. and then I save the file n it became winamp playlist file. But the Quality is very bad... Sound are bad...my created video are blur....damn bad....

xia -August 9, 2005

ermm...addition : wrong wrong wrong!!!!still can not...!

I'm trying this one...

B>Freakin Idiots !!

Croc Hunter -December 7, 2004

xia -August 9, 2005

Hi ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD NEWS FOR U ALL!!!! I can do it already!!!!

Karen -August 10, 2005

Karen, Choose a lesser quality option for your movie when you goto save it. If it took 15hrs there is no way you will get it to fit on a CD or DVD

Anyone who can tell me how to convert .ram files to .wmv, thanks Croc ur the wisest...i can convert those movie maker files to wmv now to only dunno how to do .ram, anyone knows ?

Kbone -August 11, 2005

Ok. Anyone who wants to save there Windows Movie Maker Projects so that the file can be made into DVD and not saved as a [*.MSWMM], I believe I have a solution. When you go to Save Movie As, and then you add a file extension, such as (.wmv) or (.mpg), that will probably not work. When you save it like that Microsoft adds the file extension (.MSWMM) onto it. So, the file extension you added only added onto the name of the file.

Here is what to do: After finishing the movie in the time line, you go to File, and then Save Movie File. That should work. If you need to contact me, I am at varganater@aol.com.

Sean -August 13, 2005

OK. It worked on my computer. So that should solve the problem. Please e-mail me if that did not work for you and I will try to help you.

Chris -August 16, 2005

Also, i tried saving it as .wmv with a different name. When i did that it saved, but when i went to open it up it was still under the file .mswmm. Are u sure that is how u do it? If someone knows a software that can convert it(preferably a free software) that would be very appreciative. I read the top and it says that u cant do that, but im just asking in case. Thank you.

Chris -August 16, 2005

Got it, though it still doesnt work. But i think its just my movie that does it cuz it worked with another file. Just go into windows movie maker and then go to File > Save Movie File > select My computer > name and location > and continue from there.

Chris, if you are having problems saving your Windows Movie Maker Project as something beside a .mswmm, e-mail me at varganater@aol.com.

dr dick dumbo -September 2, 2005

Linda: buring the MSWMM to CD or DVD will not work. See the link provided above to save as WMV then burn it to disc.

dr dick dumbo: No, you must have the source files, and have them in the right place.(I'm assuming you've looked in your recycle bin etc and done a search for the deleted files)

Can you give me some instructions as to how I can convert my MSWMM movie file to an avi or mpeg file?

Nairy -September 2, 2005

OK..,.i'm gonna be another person that drive you all nuts but I definately can appreciate everyones frustration cause i have been working on this project for 5 days now.

Ok I have saved my Movie to computer which gave it a WMV extension now I have converted it to an AVI file...do I need to convert it again so that it can be read on DVD or is this a completely stupid question. CROC or anyone please save me from this freakin nightmare project

Angeleyes0972 -September 13, 2005

Hi Angeleyes0972,

Most DVD players will play WMV these days, often AVI to. You can usually see the formats your DVD player supports on the front of it. However to convert it to a true DVD format yes you'll need an encoder. I use WinDVD Creator.

If you search the net for "avi to dvd converter" or "wmv to dvd converter" you will find a similar tool. Unfortuneately I don't know of a free one but most have a free trial.

Croc Hunter -September 13, 2005

Hi Croc Hunter

Thanks for your response. I did purchase WINAVI Video converter online yesturday and I did convert it to a DVD file but the output section it puts it in cannot be located when trying to burn. I will look at the WIN DVD Creator and see if this helps but I don't want to keep buying all these programs and still not work. I have never been so frustrated with something like i am with this. I wish I had never used Windows Movie maker just cause it seems such a difficult process to get it to dvd format. IF you have any other suggestions I'm open to it. I have also email tech support for the WINAVI converter and they so far haven't been able to help me.

Angeleyes0972 -September 14, 2005

Angeleyes0972,

The files it outputs.. are they vob bup and ifo files? Whatever they are locate the folder they are in usually a VIDEO TS folder and burn to disc. WinAVI doesn't like _ or other characters in folder names. Don't buy another program. WinAVI is a good one.

Step 1: Click the "DVD" button on the main interface, or you can click "menu" button on the main interface, then select "Any to DVD" on the submenu of the "format convert", and then the program will pop-up a "Select file" box. Then choose the AVI file that you want to convert.

Step 2: Output directory: You can click the "Browse" button to select the output directory. This can be any folder on your computer but an empty one is best. You may also be able to output straight to your blank DVD disc in you DVD burner drive.

Step 3: Select encoder: You can click it to choose the DVD mode. When it is ready, just click "OK" to start to convert.

http://www.winavi.com/en/support/support_video_converter.htm Still stuck? quote the actual error message you are getting.

Croc Hunter -September 14, 2005

OK I made a video with WMM. Used the advice on this page to convert it to WMV (saved it to computer through WMM) and then DLed Stoik video converter and converted it to an MPEG2. I thought my troubles were over. Not. I have burned it to a -R and a +R DVD and neither will play on my DVD player still! (I even tried a +RW) Am I doing something wrong?? My DVD player is only a year old.

aykut demirtas -September 24, 2005

You read this site and figure it out the same way I did....

Now somebody help me with my DVD playing...like I described above. Also adding this: I recently had somebody tell me it may be because I transferred my movies from my camera to the comp using WMM. They said that "windows, even though you converted the movies afterwards, likes to keep them 'its own' and they sometimes wont work on DVD players for some reason'". Anybody agree with this or have another solution or advice???

****NEED HELP**** Ok i was trying to convert mswmm to anything but that...and i got fustrated and destroyed my printer after i flung it into the next room with a pooper scooper that was lying around. Can anyone tell me how to fix a printer? I have most of the pieces. Thank you

J-bob -November 2, 2005

Been sitting here for maybe an hour now waiting for some help, got bored and stuck one end of the pooper scooper into the litter box. While walking back in here to check on you guys i accidentally stepped on the handle of the pooper scopper and was splattered by lots of dried up feline waste.

MSWMM TO AVI?

CINDI -November 18, 2005

.......why are you using movie maker if you don't even know how to?

MSWMM is a PROJECT file that simply contains a list of which movie files/sounds you are using in the project, where they are, and how long they play. In Windows Movie Maker, to RENDER a movie file from a project file MSWMM you need to click File --> Save Movie File and then choose Save to Hard Drive and follow the steps. From then on you can use Nero or whatever to burn your new movie to a VCD or DVD. Congratulations.

Lt. Xenodite -November 18, 2005

ok...I did it! If ya wanna convert those mswmm files to something else. Follow this: 1) open up your windows movie maker 2) go to menus at top of windows movie maker and select "file" then...move cursor down to "import video"....just get your movie in so you see it here. 3)...now that you see your movie...I want you to save it like this: 4)Drag movie down to time line at bottom of windows movie maker 5) go back to top and hit "file" 6) move cursor down to "save movie file" and select it 7)new window opens....make sure "my computer, save for playback on my computer" is selected 8) hit next 9)new window opens...type your movie name (anything ya want) ...and select where ya want to save it in your computer. I save it to desktop so I can find easily. 10)hit next 11) another window opens...hit next 12)ok...now you have your movie saved to your desktop in wmv format! 13) now you can play like this ...or convert into other format files.

I recommend http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm you can get free downloads for converting if ya want.

tmrcat -December 2, 2005

Thanks for the converting tip. Worked like a charm.

Rob -December 4, 2005

Ok Smart ones... Here you have a 13yr old telling you how to convert it to something other than MSWMM.

-First Open the file in Movie Editor what you wont to convert -Then go to File > Save Movie File -Then click next and then click next again -Then where it says like video setting change it where it has the little drop down list..

I actually have a different question. Where can I download the OLD Windows Movie Maker? I'm on 2000 Pro and WMM2 is not supported. Did Microsoft already stop supporting us 2000 users, because I can't find a download for it on their site.

Colleen -January 3, 2006

Colleen,

Yes, WMM2 is for Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional. Windows ME (2000) is not supported anymore. You will need to reinstall WMM from your original ME (2000) cd.

Croc Hunter -January 4, 2006

OK, I am putting together a movie full of pictures. Now when i view it, i looks like complete ****! I made these pics in paint(there little stick figures) and put them under the format of .BMP. Then i imported them into Windows movie maker. When i first played it(no problems), the slides went on WAY to long, so i shortened the lengh. Then, after shortening the lengh of the slides, i played it, and theres chunks of the stick figures NOT even showing up! Its like when i shortened them, it erased a BUNCH of the figure. If ANYONE can help me, please do!!! EMAIL------ boba_fett_922@yahoo.com.....HELP!!

Bosck -January 5, 2006

Bosck,

That's because video is saved in groups of images or frames called GOB's. Framerate and number of frames per GOB should be kept constant or they may get dropped. What you should be making is a GIF file. Photoshop or Paintshop Pro are ideal for these.

ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK to save as .AVI or MPEG go into movie maker, click file, save movie file, click best quaility for playback on my computer, click next, and bang its saved on your computer saved in a wmv format. Now all u gotta do is download a WMV to AVI converter and convert it. TADA! Note:.AVI will take up alot of space better to leave as .WMV. with WMV you can play it in windows media player and winamp etc.

Hope this helped!

albee -May 24, 2006

For those of you who want to save your MSWMM file, there are a few things you need to understand.

1. MSWMM files are prject files with outlines of what files to put where. It isn't until after you choose to save the file as a movie that it is actually saved as a movie file.

2. Just because the project file (MSWMM file) plays in movie maker doesnt mean that it is a movie. Windows Movie Maker will just play all of the fiels you inported in the order that you imported them. At this point the files have not been joined to make a movie file.

For those of you who are only getting partial file saves when trying to save to a DVD/CD:

Your system does not have enough memory(this does not mean harddrive space . . . it means virtual memory) to save the entire movie at the quality/speed that you want. If you keep trying to save to a DVD/CD, then stop trying that . . . since if you have a crappy system it won't work, and save it to your computer's harddrive. Then burn it to your DVD/CD.

Jennifer Parham -June 17, 2006

Hi,

I have 5 mswmm files that I've created and subsequently turned into ~10Mb .wmv files that I've emailed. Anyway, I wanted to combine the mswmm files sequentially and add/edit a little and make a high quality dvd. After I open the first mswmm, the program won't let me import the next one. The only work around I see would be to create new .wmv files for each of the mswmm files and combine them. Is that the only way to do it? Thanks. Jim.

alex -July 17, 2006

Okay I tried reading through all the stuff above and just gave up. so here is my queation: how do i convert an .ifo file from a dvd that was made for me to a .MSWMM file to post on utube?

sflatinboy -July 29, 2006

Can anyone help me convert MSWMM to Mpeg or wmv? Thank you Db

Dale -August 4, 2006

how do i convert .MSWMM files to AVI

gerard -August 7, 2006

For those saying: "Idiots all you have to do is open the wswmm file and "SAVE AS" a different file type" You're DEAD WRONG. It does NOT allow you to save it any OTHER types. The ONLY option is mswmm. My take is that you need to get a converter software to change the file type. To the other posters,Be weary of some of those geek tech wannabe guys that give you a mile long wrong answer..... anyone agree with my answer about the conversion? btw, im running windwos xp & have been using windows movie maker but i to am needing to convert the file.

responder -August 7, 2006

ALSO knowing how to convert the file type using the converter software will probably be the next concern....i'm not savvy with those converters but that's what it will take to get your desired result.

responder -August 7, 2006

LIKE HALF THE PEOPLE IN HERE HOW DO I TURN A MSWMM TO OTHER FORMATS SO I CAN PUT MY VIDEOS ON THE WEB..PLEASE! GIVE ME THE ANSWER A.S.A.P..I WILL REALLY TRULLY APRECIATE..THANK U

ERICKA -August 16, 2006

its actually very easy, go to file > save movie file > save to my computer > then simply choose what format (wmv or dvi) then u can either post it or convert to avi if need be

paul -August 16, 2006

dude, that is so not true. you can't save it as any other file type. it does NOT give you other file types!!! where r u getting your info????

responder -August 18, 2006

i know it may be a bit late but u can resave the file on windows movie maker as a wmv, then you need to download a converter like IMTOO (free obviously):P any way then you convert the file and there you have it

name -August 18, 2006

what the paul guy said was right i just expanded on it

First update to the latest Microsoft Movie Maker 2.1 http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

- Open Your MSWMM - Goto: Start> All Programs> Accessories> Entertainment> Windows Movie Maker File> Open Project> Locate the WSWMM> Drag the clip/s onto the storyboard line.

- Save Your MSWMM Project As a WMV Or AVI Movie file - File> Save movie file> My Computer> Enter movie name & folder to save to Check 'Other settings'> Any option you chose from the drop box will save as a WMV except for "DV-AVI (PAL)" it will save as AVI

If you need more help e-mail me [misticblade@hotmail.com]

Four+Four=Fish -August 27, 2006

I have over 5 days experience with WMM so I should know what I'm talkin about :)

MSWMM is not a video format - it is a container for the video/audio sequencing & effects etc (project) from which WMM creates a WMV or sends to a DV Camera.

Listen to Croc Hunter & read previous posts - I have never seen a thread where the same inane question has been repeated so many times.

grumpy -August 28, 2006

Hall Effect is right. Just do this: just open it up in windows movie maker and instead of doing "Save Profect File" scroll your little mouse-cursor down a few more millimeters and get to "Save Movie File"... It will then ask you all of the different features you want and will save it as a .wmv (windows media video file). from there it should be the easiest thing you ever do in your life to convert it to .avi (i don't see why you would want to though) or .mpg

"QUOTE: I have noticed that 3 people have asked about changing a .MSWMM to a .GIF or .JPEG. I want to know, too! Please! My friend told me something about an animated gif. Is there a specific file suffix for that? Please, if you have any answers, e-mail me at erin.carribean@sgs.zzn.com. Your help is sooooo much appreciated! P.S. And I've been seeing a lot of rude comments... Erin Carribean -June 6, 2006"

i h8 rude people too, no there is no suffix for animated gifs, although sometimes it gets tricky when you accidentally open an animated gif into a non animation supporting program and save it, the rest of the anim is gone.

Wow, this guy is really annoying.

iamcon: WMV do not need dll files to run. Sounds like there is a prolem with your player. Uninstall/reinstall it or try a different player.

Cro Hunter can you help me?

I have two questions any info would be great or even a website.

1) Can you edit a clip to go backwards instead of fowards?

2) Can you use wmm to make a screen saver? I was able to save it fine and it plays on windows media player put I can't seem to make it switch over to a screen saver. Any help would be greatly appreicated

DiMarie -October 1, 2006

I have this error message pop up when I try to save my movie, from Windows Movie Maker this pops up: "Windows Movie Makercannot save the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available, that the saving location is still available, and that there is enough free disk space available, and then try again."

Now, I have read this whole thing, and tried various things suggested. I have even gone into Save movie file... over 7 times trying to get this straighted out. I changed the location it was saved to, to the C drive, D drive, Desktop, My documents, and the floppy disk drive, which wasn't going to work anyway.

Now, I understand that if I follow the "next" button steps it is supposed to save my MSWMM file to WMV, which I would love to have. I thought since it played it would work, but that's not the case. This is yet another MSWMM file question. How can I get this error message to go away, so that I can 1) Burn My movie to a DVD and 2) Upload it onto a video hosting site, and youtube?

I just can't seem to find the right answer to my questions, and I've tried everything.

I even downloaded windows movie maker 2.1, and that still did nothing. Can someone please help me? I'm seriously stuck here. Is there some kind of program, that lets you edit movies that are in MSWMM format? Something like windows movie maker, only... it work. Haha ^_^ Because there really aren't programs out there to convert difficult files like this.

But anyway, please help someone. Thanks in advance. =]

e-mail me: Kate09190@aol.com

Kate -October 1, 2006

Tony if only you'd take the time to read some of my posts.

File> Save movie file> My Computer> Enter movie name & folder to save to Check 'Other settings'> Any option you chose from the drop box will save as a WMV except for "DV-AVI (PAL)" it will save as AVI

Croc Hunter -October 2, 2006

DiMarie

1) No you can't, unless you split every frame then reversed the order manualy.. what a pain. Expensive DVD authoring programs like Pinnacle can do this easily. Some flash programs can too.

2) Yes you can find "free" tools to help create the necessary files: http://www.softdd.com/aviscrn/index.htm

Croc Hunter -October 2, 2006

Kate

Verify your source files are there. File> New Project. Import into Collections> locate your source files. Setup your movie on the timeline/storyboard like before and try saving again. Broadband 150kbps is fine for the internet. Save it to your C: drive into a folder you know exists.

Is it for myspace? I don't know about you tube limits, I upload to my own hosting service, and use it on my myspace profile. You can add it as a video there for all to see too. Only Movie Maker can open MSWMM.

Croc Hunter -October 2, 2006

Croc Hunter- Now it's not for myspace, it's an AMV (anime music video) I'm making it for my sister, for her birthday. ^_^

I actually checked, and I had noticed that I renamed it. I would of never have knows Windows Movie Maker had existed if my friend hadn't tried sending me something stupid she was doing though that. And when her's didn't work, because she sent me the non-saved file, it was named something else and I was playing around with it and thought, "Oh I bet I can make AMVs on here.: And low and behold, I could. Only thing is, is that I don't remember what she had named it before. And I even right clicked on the fie (I saved it to the desktop) went to properties and renamed it there too, so it would change.

I tried copy and pasting everything into a new Windows Movie Maker file. But it still said that I had to verify t he sources. I think thta maybe since it's from the old video that could be the problem. Should I just make it over again? Because no matter where I save it (C:, D:, My documents, Desktop etc.,) nothing works. ^_^;;;

Kate -October 3, 2006

please email how to convert MSWMM to dat avi mpeg file. MSWMM File is 280MB THNKS.

dgmpaas -October 3, 2006

hey croc hunter, i did the saving thing on my computer.. am i getting the right result coz its taking 100 000 mins. +++ and still counting to save the file it has not even completed 1%. please help. thanks. gracey

gracey -October 3, 2006

Kate

Even renamed you should be able to "Import into Collections" (not copy paste). Drag it down onto the storybord/timeline where you need it. Then delete the old file/s. If one was renamed it's likely more were. Repeat the above for all your source files. Failing that, you'll need to start from scratch.

Croc Hunter -October 5, 2006

Ah, hm... it doesn't show up on the Import Files list unless I choose the option "All Files" And when I click on it, it says, "The file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\AMV!!!!!!!!!!.MSWMM is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker."

Should I just make a new one...? Or is there something wrong with my Windows Movie Maker software?

Kate -October 6, 2006

Also, when I click on it regularly, not though Import into collections, it works. Which is actually kind of strange, since I can click on it and open it, but not import it.

Kate -October 6, 2006

Kate,

I meant re-import the actual video you want to edit. You can't import a .MSWMM file. You can open it. File> Open Project> find your MSWMM. Then goto File> Import into Collections> locate and re-import your video, audio, pictures, whatever. Then you drag these files down onto the storyboard/timeline and build your movie. If I were you I would start again from scratch.

Croc Hunter -October 7, 2006

Ah, I'll do just that. Thanks so much for all of your help.

I am currently using Windows Movie Maker to create movies that contain both still images and video clips. I am using Nero Express to burn the entire movie onto a DVD but I am having a problem with the quality of the video clip portin of the movie. I import them into WMM with fire wire and the quality seems fina at that point but when I save the movie and use Nero to burn it, the end result leaves the video clips blurry while the still images are clear. There seems to be some degradation in the transfer from WMM to Nero. Any suggestions?

theother opinion -December 19, 2006

first it makes a stupid file in MY movies( likely place) not where you want it. then it makes a file only windows can play ( trash)and it crashes all the time, some times 20 times before you get a finished ( video) and I use the word Video with reservation, because the file format is useless after you record it. you can not redo it you have to start from scratch. what a joke.

I have tried all these suggestons over and over, but it still doesnt let me save it. most of the movie is pictures, and when i have the pictures alone, it lets me save as a movie file. However, as soon as i add certain into the project, that error message appears. I have checked the clips are n the right folder etc, so im now completely stuck what to do! Please can anyone help? Having read through the majority of this 2+ year old thread, I will keep adding to the hell that Bill Gates dropped out of college to put me in..

CrocGuy, I really really hope you're on windows vista and havent been stung by a stingray. Or anyone for that matter.

WINDOWS VISTA user here, working on an ulcer.

Same old story, is there any possible way for Vista users to convert MSWMM to a normal type, or has microsoft completely stopped the entire world from using their software and making it compatitable with another?

I can't convert MSWMM files due to Windows Vista, what is the latest solution? Pleease..

I scanned all 66 pages and can't believe how many people ask the same question when the answer was available many times. All I want to know is how to copy a clip out of a project and save it to use in another project.

I have not got to the point of saving a movie. I tried using Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 and find it very unfriendly, with no help from Adobe.

Tana Brook -April 28, 2007

Tana, edit your clip to only have the section you want and save is as a WMV file. Then add to your second project wherever you want.

Croc Hunter -April 28, 2007

ellioteon, I'm sorry but the handbook clearly states YOU ARE AN IDIOT. This ridicoulos page is to long enough full of already answerd questions and crap posts. Whoever runs this website should be covered in honey and tied to an ants nest.

Quote the exact error you are getting. At a guess your souce files are corrupt - delete all and rebuild your movie. Or you simply don't have RAM memory or enough disk space to save as WMV - delete all, make a tiny basic 5 second clip and try saving it as the lowest quality WMV.

You people want real help? Goto my forum: http://streetsie.com/forum

Croc Hunter -April 28, 2007

Don't call me an idiot because two and a half years of my life haven't been dedicated to an internet thread where, as you said, is "too long enough full of already answered questions and crap posts." you seem to be the only one sticking around. but im not here for personal ****--

I havent read too many posts with users that have Vista, MY BAD. I have a brand new computer with 2048 RAM. I've done many things already on this thread, none of which have worked yet.

I believe I had already narrowed the problem down to the possibility of corrupt files. Which I thought I already double checked, but I shall go back again. The exact problem: Upon publishing movie, the publish cancels itself due to reasons you should have raked in your brain by now. Not enough storage space, corrupt files, or whatever.

I have successfully published a movie at 5 minutes of one clip. It worked. Which makes me think it does have to due with files. blah blah blah

again, keep logging on to this **** everyday and getting mad at all of us, its whatever

see you in another two years

ellioteon -April 28, 2007

ellioteon, I'm not mad at you for being an idiot. Just stating facts. You still didn't quote the exact error message so how can anyone help you more than I tried to? You have enough RAM, free disk space to I'd say. As you got it to save once before it's most likely a corrupt file in your clip or you're saving at to high a quality/filesize.

I have just about the same question as everyone else. Except I saved mine to a wmv file and it still wont let me do anything with it. Like if I want to open the video I made up in Real Player or my cd burning thing it says it's not compatible and it still says its an mswmm file even though I thought I changed it. Also, what kind of blank cd do you have to use to burn a video? A cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r..or what? I have tried videos on a cd-r and you couldn't see the video, but you could hear the music. Sometimes I would get an error message saying there is no playback thing on the disk. Your help would be greatly appreciated because it is obvious that I don't know what i'm doing.

Windows Vista Premium offers windows dvd maker. So , my question is, is it possible to change a .MSWMM file into a Jpeg-2 File format? Or are there options for me to burn a MS movie maker file onto a dvd??? Thanks.

You answered my inquiry back in April, I was using XP and now have Vista and find that it behaves much differently than the XP. When I name my clips and save to the Project, no matter what other items I put into the Project file, only the latest one is on it and all the clips that I save are changed to the latest files clips that I saved. I have had to name clips from source files at least 4 times and losing them some how. I did make three completed movies with the XP, but have had not success with Vista. I have read and read and purchased books -- they tell you what to do but not how to do it. I am working with DV-AVI files and I thought that as soon as you save as in the XP project file it changes them to WMMV file. I need help and am so frustrated. Tana Brook 8-01-2007

Hiya. I'm trying to import a particular song into my Windows Movie Maker project, but every time I click on it (after going through the correct 'import audio or music' process) it pops up with a little box saying "The file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\Sample Music\02 Starlight.m4a is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker."

I figure I need to convert the file into something else but I just can't figure out how the hell to do it.

I'd appreciate your advice if you get the chance.

I'm using Windows Movie Maker for a project and want to know the correct way of saving/burning the documentary on the CD to present on the teacher's Mac in class. She doesn't have Windows Media Player, so I have to save it as Quicktime, how do I do that?

Laura -November 15, 2007

Hey Croc - I've converted my MSWMM to WMV, AVI and also MPG (using Prism) - but neither will play in my DVD player. Any suggestions?

Eddie -November 26, 2007

Converted? Converting the MSWMM itself won't work as it doesn't actually contain the source files. Open the MSWMM file with the MSWMM program, check the source files are there and that it plays, then save as WMV or AVI via the MSWMM steps I gave above. If the WMV AVI MPG plays on your computer it's prolly a burning, CD/DVD type eg: +R -R issue. Check the compatability. A true DVD burning program like WinDVD creates VOB files from your WMV MPG etc.

Guys, is too easy, if you have Windows Movie Make, you can save you Video in any file.. 1- Make you video and in top have Publish Movie , click and select you want to save for send via Email or just save in you HardDrive.. Next you can use this video in any program..

Ok, I have Windows Vista with Windows Movie Maker. I've read the above comments (most of them anyway), and let me explain something. There is NO Save Movie File, ONLY SAVE PROJECT AS... I can NOT drop down the little thing to save it to anything other than Windows Movie Maker. I can NOT open in Windows Media Player, and I can in no way shape or form save it as anything other than a MSWMM program. I NEED to convert it, but as you see, all your solutions offered so far, DON'T WORK. Perhaps we have different versions, I am not certain. Here is the thing, when I click on Publish video, it will not publish either. It says there is an error. So can someone please tell me what to do? My email address is molliemajere@yahoo.com. Can you help me out? I got AVI video type clips, I put them in Windows Movie Maker and put it together and stuff right, and when i try to save it into my computer it says "Windows Movie Maker cannot save the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available, that the saving locations is still available, and that there is enough free disk space available, and then try again." what does it mean?
