Digital Camera Memory Survives Blast

Earlier this month, Don Frazier, a newspaper reporter in Missouri, was covering the dismantling of a bridge. He set up his digital camera 240 yards away from the event, but it turns out that wasn't far away enough. The explosion that dismantled the bridge also destroyed the reporter's camera. The equipment, which was worth more than $15,000, was a complete loss, but one thing did survive: the camera's Compact Flash card. Frazier was able to retrieve the card, complete with pictures of the explosion. Flash memory is solid-state media and is made of circuits of solid material, with no movable parts, and that helped it survive. Probably not the greatest way to get a good photo, but at least he got the job done. Don't try this at home.

This story sounds like a crock to me, made up to promote SanDisk products. Note the neat picture of the memory card which accompanies the story? How is it that the guy is dumb enough to put the camera in harms way, but has the reflexes of a mongoose to remotely trigger the cameras while the explosion is taking place? And the story states he has had a 256MB card since 1999 - But I think SanDisk only introduced them in 2001: http://www.sandisk.com/pressrelease/010212_large.htm

Don is a good friend of mine I used to work with in Florida before I moved to Connecticut and before he moved to Missouri. This story is not a crock. In fact, knowing Don, it's absolutely hilarious and not surprising at all, knowing him and knowing the luck he has in general and with his gear.
