Filling Your Video iPod with Content

Last week, I took a look at Apple Computer's latest iPod, which blends all the great features we've come to expect from the premier MP3 player on the market with a brand-new feature: video support. The problem, of course, is how to get video content from a PC or Macintosh into the new iPod. As it turns out, you have a variety of ways to do so. Let's take a look.

Buy Videos and TV Show Episodes from iTunes
The first method couldn't be easier: Simply load Apple's award-winning iTunes player (version 6.0 or later), navigate to the increasingly misnamed iTunes Music Store, and choose Music Videos, Pixar, or TV Shows. To date, Apple doesn't have a lot of video content available for purchase: There are about 2000 music videos, 6 Pixar animation shorts, and all the episodes from five TV shows, two of which are current hits: "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost." Each video or TV show episode costs $1.99, which isn't horrible, especially if you want to catch up on that episode of "Lost" that you missed. Encoded in 647Mbps MPEG-4 format, one-hour TV episodes (usually about 43 minutes of actual video) take up a little over 200MB each.

As simple as this is, there are caveats, as always. The iTunes-supplied videos and TV show episodes are available only in the iPod's native 320 x 240 resolution, so they don't provide full fidelity when displayed on a TV set, using the iPod's optional AV cables. You tend to see MPEG artifacting, and more so than with a typical digital cable signal. (These TV shows do, however, look decent on a typical computer display, if you don't mind running them in a window at double size.) These videos are also more restricted than the music content you purchase at iTunes: Although you can copy them to as many as five PCs or Macs, and copy them to an unlimited number of iPods, you can't burn them to DVDs.

The iTunes video and TV show experience is barebones at the moment, but I expect it to grow dramatically in the days ahead. It's just a shame that Apple doesn't offer a higher-resolution option and let you transcode the shows down to a format the iPod can use. Or, it would be nice if the iPod could simply play higher-resolution video at its native resolution on the fly.

Converting Home Movies
Many people, of course, have home movies that might be suitable for viewing on a new iPod. However, to get this content into a format the iPod can use, you need to do a bit of format conversion. The iPod supports two video formats: H.264 (up to 768Kbps, 320 x 240, 30fps) and MPEG-4 (up to 2.5Gbps, 480 x 480, 30fps). Most home movies are likely in MPEG-2 format—if you adhere to my belief that MPEG-2 is the one true video format—or, God forbid, Windows Media Video (WMV), which will require some extra work.

If your home movies are in WMV format, you're going to want to first convert them to AVI format, which is dramatically less compressed than WMV but is more compatible with non-Microsoft software. Windows Movie Maker (WMM) 2.0, part of Windows XP, can do this easily enough: Simply import the video into WMM 2.0, and drag it to the Storyboard. Choose File, Save Movie File, and select DV-AVI format.

Both Mac and PC users can use Apple's excellent QuickTime Pro 7 ($29) to convert MPEG-2 or AVI video to an iPod-friendly format. There are two ways to do this. Apple now includes a handy new Movie to iPod (320 x 240) export type that pushes video directly into an acceptable H.264 format. And this works fine for typical 4:3 home video.

But if you're working with widescreen video formats, as I am, you'll need to tinker a bit. QuickTime Pro lets you specify options for many of its export types, so I use Export to MPEG-4 and manipulate the settings so that the resulting file fits within the iPod's limited range of formats but retains its widescreen aspect ratio. For example, I've created a number of home videos at 720 x 405. To convert these for use on an iPod, I've been toying with a custom resolution of 480 x 270, a data rate of 2Gbps, 30fps, and MPEG-4 Basic MP4 file format. The resulting files are a bit large—a 5-minute clip is about 75MB—but the quality is absolutely excellent, given the resolution, and these movies look fantastic on the iPod. You might experiment with smaller data rates to achieve an ideal balance between size and quality.

Windows users might also consider a free tool called Videora iPod Converter, which can convert various video formats into iPod-friendly 320 x 240 H.264 video. Note, however, the Videora is no good for widescreen videos, which it will flatten into tall and skinny-looking 4:3 movies. But if you're using more standard 4:3 video, this is a good solution.

Video conversion, or transcoding, is a time-intensive prospect, so don't be surprised to discover that your home movies require quite a bit of time to convert. This task is still the type of thing that's best done overnight or on a second PC.

Converting DVD Movies
Although it's technically still illegal to back up a DVD movie for personal use, I'll temporarily thumb my nose at the ill-conceived Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and at least discuss the process. After all, you paid for the movie. Why shouldn't you be able to watch it on your own iPod?

Mac users will want to check out a free (and open-source) tool called Handbrake. This wonderful utility rips DVD movies to MPEG-4 format and, when used correctly, can be made to format the resulting movie in iPod-friendly format. However, my advice is to rip DVDs to full-sized, full-quality MPEG-4 originals and use QuickTime Pro to convert them for use on the iPod. Although this is time consuming, I did this double conversion recently with the movie Under the Tuscan Sun, ultimately converting my original 632 x 356 MPEG-4 version into the 480 x 270 format described above, because the film is in widescreen format. The results were surprisingly good, although the conversion took the better part of an afternoon on my G4-based PowerBook. I'm told G5 systems can rip DVDs and convert video far faster.

On the PC side, I use a variety of tools to rip DVD movies. Slysoft AnyDVD ($39) unprotects Hollywood DVD movies, letting you use conventional software tools to duplicate or rip them for backup purposes. And I use a free tool called Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK,) to convert unprotected DVD movie files into XviD or DivX videos. As with all video processes, these tasks take a lot of time and are best performed on a secondary PC.

Hopefully, that's enough to get you started. If you need more information about DVD ripping, please refer to my previous commentary, Fair Use? How to Back Up DVD Movies.

Organizing and Synching Video
Once you've got the content, you simply need to add it to the new Videos library in iTunes 6 and set up the application to sync that content with your iPod. Videos appear in iTunes using a pleasingly graphic screen by default, although you can revert to the standard text-based view, if you'd like. Enjoy your video content on the go, or via your TV set with the optional AV cables. This is truly the beginning of a video revolution.

Transcoding may get faster in the future...yay!!! http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1880668,00.asp?kc=ETRSS02129TX1K0000532

You could have done this on the Treo...and much much more....no need for the iPod video...

Only thing is, now iTunes officially sells the videos which isn't that bad of a deal.

Treo user -November 2, 2005

One item the author left out is video podcasts. This is another way to get content for your video enabled iPod. Often they are free, and vary from music videos to tech talk and anything in between. . here's an example: http://feeds.feedburner.com/RadioOrphansVideo

A better explaination of how to transcode Xvid, DivX, .avi, mpg2 and other files to the iPod formats would be great

MarrowMan -November 2, 2005

On windows based systems that is.

MarrowMan -November 2, 2005

We created castsource.com to help fill up your iPod with free Video and Podcasts.

At castsource.com you enter a search term like "funny" and you get back an RSS feed with video MPEG files that have that keyword tagged to them. Go to iTunes Advanced menu and subscribe and you will get a list of videos to download for free.

You can also get an RSS feed for new podcasts. This feed can be used in RSS readers like My Yahoo and reader.google.com to get the latest podcasts for your keyword.

And if you want to do more podcast browsing, visit http://digitalpodcast.com or our podcast search service at http://podcastsearchservice.com

I believe the author is mistaken when he says you need to change the settings in Quicktime Pro for widescreen content. I'm on a Mac and all I do is throw a video at Quicktime with export to iPod set, widescreen or 4:3 and it takes care of the aspect ratio perfectly. I doubt this is different in the Windows version of Quicktime.

Videora iPod Converter on Windows is very buggy (crashes often and does not work as claimed). One can convert AVI files into formats playable in both iTunes and QuickTime Player, but myself and many others have been unable to sync those converted files to the iPod. Even after trying many parameters that others claim work, the resulting file will not transfer to the new iPod and play. Videora iPod Converter, in it's present state of developement simply is far too buggy to be useful. Although QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows is rather slow, the resulting files will transfer to the new iPod without a hitch and play beautifully.

Donny -November 6, 2005

I am using a 17" Powerbook with a 1.5 GHz processor and am approaching 12 hours for the QuickTime export process. While Handbrake proved to be a quick, easy program to use to rip the move (The Incredibles) to mp4 format QuickTime is not living up to its name. Anyone have any suggestions for ways to speed up the process (that don't involve buying a G5 or <cough, gasp> a windows pc)?

Don -November 6, 2005

I been using Videora iPod converter and it seems to work great for me. It has not crashed. I think you should check your pc.

Dirk Long -November 7, 2005

I used Export->Movie to iPod in QT Pro 7 to transfer mpg files to the new iPod. I can view the video perfectly in the iPod but there is no audio. Can anyone help to resolve this problem?

d2ud2u -November 7, 2005

I've been succesful using the Videora iPod Converter to handle widescreen, it's just a matter of selecting/creating a suitable output format. I use

MPEG4-CBR 320x176 768Kbit/s with 128Kbit Stereo soundtrack

So far this has worked like a champ.

Another source is a hacked Series 1 Tivo, you can pull shows of that and convert very easily.

Some avi files come with a weird audio format (ac3 or something). I've had this problem aswell, and its possible to watch it on computer with sound... but only while using some special software. Thats why on ipod's it won't work usually. Most movies should be fine though.

Folks with no audio... you are probably converting MPEG1 files. You are out of luck as it is documented in the QT help files. You'll have to try another route.

El Gato's EyeTV has a direct export to iPod capability. http://elgato.com/

Rick -December 26, 2005

As for the issue of the movies and music not loading, I found I had a really wierd issue. The PC loaded the iPod as the H: drive - which was already set up as a network home directory. When I did the upload, it copied everything to my network drive instead of my iPod.

To fix, I went into the drive manager and changed the drive letter of the iPod and it all worked fine.

As for the movies, I'm using XiliSoft. It seems to work pretty good, but you do have to fuss with it for Widescreen.

Cheers!

JustHelping -December 26, 2005

I have had little luck with Videora and tried Auto GK, but just ended up with files that wouldn't drop into my iTunes library. What did finally work is having AnyDVD to decrypt my movie, then using Auto GK to convert it to avi format (it did this by default), then using Videora to convert it to MP4 (again, it does this by default). I know there must be a simpler way, but with the vague directions I've found on the net such as above (what do you do after you convert with Auto GK Paul? It's a useless file in the default avi format as it won't drop into iTunes), or specific directions on other sites including products that are no longer available (DVD Decrypter), I was lost. This just happened to work and required no special fiddling with settings to get right, but it is a slow process.

roundaboutway -December 30, 2005

Nevermind, AutoGK isn't what worked, it was EJECTING the iPOD! Crazy. Apparently, dropping video files into my iTunes library will not work if the iPod is connected and showing in iTunes. Eject the iPod, and they go right in. Videora iPod converter doesn't convert all my files properly. Sometimes one will have sound but no video or video with no sound, and I have to create a playlist and transcode several video files for certain movies and play them on a playlist in order on the iPod, but so far, it's the only free converter (besides My TV ToGo) that has worked at all.

roundaboutway -December 31, 2005

i tried to use videora and it says soem crap....ive tried like 10 converters and none of them work. can any1 tell me about a free video converter except videora! HELP!!!!

bob -January 1, 2006

just use Handbrake, with a mac, and follow these instructions. http://howto.diveintomark.org/ipod-dvd-ripping-guide/. FORGET Quicktime. Just right click the movie and select "Open with" and select iTunes. Disney movies have a wierd audio format that doesnt work too well. I tried ripping Valiant for my brother and it didnt work twice in a row. However, Airplane (don't call me Shirley) and Saving Private Ryan are now playing fine on my iPod.

well i have a Mac and i was wondering if there are any converting programs for macs so that i can get my audio to work?

mark Patterson -January 3, 2006

for my ipod video

mark -January 3, 2006

To get great widescreen quality on your iPod Video using Videora just use these settings:

MPEG-4>A-VBR 768 kbps 720x306 Resolution (just type it in yourself) 29.97 Framerate One Pass 128 kbps Stereo Input

For smaller file sizes just lower the resolution, but make sure you do it proportionatly to keep the proper widescreen dimensions.

Hope this helps!

OK. **Really** need some help here.

I downloaded both DVD Decrypter and Videora Ipod converter to but videos on my shiny new 30GB Ipod.

Both programs worked successfully, and I loaded the video (Green Day's Bullet in a Bible) on to my Ipod with no problem at all.

And then, tragedy struck. I went to watch my video, and there was NO AUDIO! I've heard about these problems before, and about how muxed DVD's won't convert the audio with Videora or QTP.

Is there any other converter, software, or ANYTHING that would get me my audio?

Easiest and best way I have found to convert dvd or video to ipod readable format, retaining either 4:3 or widescreen, is to use 3gp converter. It is a free application and can convert directly from a dvd VOB the best way to play your owned movies on the ipod is first remove the decryption with dvdshrink, dvdfabdecryper etc, and then re edit the dvd with dvd shrink (if you didnt already do so)reauthor the dvd and remove the menus (just have the movie) un-selecting the option to split vobs to 1gb files. this will make a single vob file of the movie. select the output place where you want the ipod movie to be on the 3gp user screen, then drag the movie vob file over. The whole process is incredibly fast. I just did my bought version of spiderman 2 in an hour. It looks great on my ipod! more details on 3gp avi conversion can be found here, plus a link for the program. http://www.divx-digest.com/software/3gp_converter.html

hope it helps:-)

Seems that the latest ?.92? version of Videora works fine for me for converting videos such as those that come from Kobra Video like the music videos ripped from MTV VH1 GAC etc. Use "Transcode New File" and accept defaults. Then drag and drop new video file (with mp4 extension) into iTunes - I drop on a video playlist item. I have Win2K with a new iPod30Gig video, no Media Edition, latest iTunes and iPod software updates installed.

Videora rocks. I'm contributing to the cause.

Yagrax

Yagrax -March 9, 2006

By the way, the videos I've converted **ARE** MUXED...MPG extensions. Audio on the iPod once there works fine. Videora can also queue the conversions...good since they take up some serious CPU. Remember to use "Transcode New File" button, not the other one.

Also, I've noticed that if you drag-n-drop a file on iTunes, and iTunes can't use it for what ever reason, it doesn't tell you. This may explain why some of your all's videos aren't "showing up". Apples needs to take usability classes from Microsoft on this one. iTunes is really a few steps below interfacewise than what we PC people are used to, imho.

Hmm. Seems like there's all these ideas for converting DVD's onto iPod.. and I'm totally lost. Which free software is the best to put onto my 30gb Video iPod? I downloaded Videora and DVD Decrypter, only to be told that those were not the best things to use, and I should be using .. which will take me another hour, but it will work, oh, wait, no it won't because it needs the setting (*blankety blank*) and you can only get this setting by ..

Confusing much.

Damn, I love this iPod, but Apple never let you know how much trouble you're in for, just to happily waste your brain watching TV. Which I'm all in favour for, don't get me wrong.

If anyone could help me.. please let me know ASAP! xox

For all those people who have had problems with certain converted videos not copying to iTunes and your iPod.... I had the same problem and I went in and renamed the converted file (even if it's just by a single character) and then tried copying it and it worked. You may be having deeper issues but hopefully this can help you out. P.S. - I used Videora to originally convert the files.

snowboozer -June 4, 2006

hum. I'm having the exact opposite problem as most others - my video, after exporting, plays the sound but shows no video. It was originally an avi file. Anyone come across this one?

mel -June 13, 2006

I got my ipod a few days ago and put some videos onto it. you could see the video but there was no sound. i found out that it was because the sound format it was in doesnt work on a video ipod. so i came to this website and saw the comment from dj boogie who said to go to this website - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/3gp_converter.html and download the format converter from it. i took his/her advice and it worked. i didnt think it would but it did. so please just trust me go to that website, register and download it, i got it as a WinRar, open it and go to 3gp_converter.exe. wait for it to come up and then change the language to english at the bottom. choose somewhere on your computer for the converted video to go to by clicking browse and then drag your video into the wee box. it does everything for you after that. trust me this works great. THANK YOU DJ BOOGIE!!

Justine -June 26, 2006

Sorry I forgot to say choose model : mp4 for ipod after you choose your language

I am currently using this tutorial to get video to ipod: http://sheerboredom.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=65

It has links to DVD decrypter and Videora. It is a little misleading where it says to 'only select the top video option' - you have to tick a sound option there too - or no sound!

So far I'm still experimenting with getting widescreen movies to look right.. but I am trying the suggestion of Nik Simpson (see posts near the top) and changing the resolution etc

All on PC.

Good luck!
