I had the two-way DirecPC for several months. If reliability is a consideration, I would strongly advise AGAINST DirecPC (DirecWay; whatever). I CONSTANTLY had problems, and they weren't related to signal strength (weather, sun spots, etc.; although I had those to on occasion). Hughes had major host problems, including capacity and routing issues, and the tech support was next to worthless. The Level 1 techs were ignorant of any equipment more advanced than a pencil eraser, and the Level 2s were virtually impossible to reach. The one time I spoke to a Level 3 was to demand my money back. He conceded, and my card was credited for all of the equipment and service charges. The only money I didn't get back was the 150 bucks or so that went to the installer. Now, when it DID work (which was never for more than 72 hours contiguously), it was fast as crap (averaging probably 1Mb+). I had latency issues, even with the two-way, but that was an acceptable compromise, considering the options (sattelite or dial-up). But that durn thing wouldn't stay working for more than a couple of days. So as soon as AT&T introduced digital cable Internet in my neighborhood, I chucked the sattelite. Cable rocks. Now, if AT&T Broadband can just stay solvent.... \\/alter Richmond

I just cancelled my Hughes two-way satelite setup. It is for sale. Reason: Hughes has a "right of fair use" policy so that if you want to download software - say 10 mb size - the first grab is at very high speed, the second at lower speed and soon the download speed drops to 56k, 48k, then 28k, then less and less - and sometimes down to zero. I spent more than 8 hours across 12 maintenance calls related to loss of signal and other outage mysteries. But the inability to download the equivalent of 10 floppy disk-size software files was a killer. THEY HAVE NO BOTTOM LIMIT ON THE DOWNLOAD SPEED DECREMENT and discussion about providing a bottom speed of maybe 56k required a business account at high prices. My antenna and modem equipment is for sale and they will support it at any US location. Edward Lias at (866) 717-4725

Having been spoiled by DSL for ever going back to dial-up, I found myself in an area that, like you, didn't have either DSL or cable. I am trying out the DirecWay system. (And doesn't that satellite look all sci-fi? : ) I'm using the two way system, as I have to have my phone line free. It does seem a little slower than DSL--but I haven't run any speed tests yet, so that may be in my mind. --Anyway, my comment is that I'd be very interested in reading an article about networking the satellite system. I have read that no 'hardware' can be used to share the signal, so we'll have to put our wireless router in the closet. Are there any good wireless hubs out there? What software is the best for handling the networking stuff? I've tried several, WinProxy & Ositis, but had problems with both. An article with hints and reccomendations would be most welcome. Thanks, Christina

Any comments on the two way service?
Tim -September 23, 2002
I have been using Direcway two way system for a few months. It is great. I have had a few problems connecting but it is on average great. My phonelines wouldn't connect half the time. Now with Direcway I can have both of my computers working at the same time. I live where dialup was connecting at about 12k at best. Now I am connecting at an average of 800k and am uploading at around 100k. This is the best service for me! Thanks

I did not put down my direcway address becasue I did not want to be bombbarded with questions. I have direcway 2 way system. I purchased it in May 2003. I use it on my motor home and I have NEVER had it go down in the year I have had it. Sometimes at night the games are a little slow but with my situation, full time camper, it is perfect and very reliable. If they had problems in the past they sure have them fixed now.

I have the Direcway system and have used it for about 6 months. I have yet to figure out how to tell what my optimal connection speed or download speed is. Is there a specific place I should be able to tell that? I have downloaded at speeds of 3-500k at times. But I am not sure if that is my peak or not. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

bottom speed is a joke!! if you have any plans to download, you will have better luck with a 28.8k modem!! direcway should be embaressed. i am.customer service is better at my local dmv. there should be laws governing discloser of bottom speed info. i got skrewed!! dont be like me. stay away from direcway . it is faster to use us mail, or homing pigions perhaps.

Hi. Have the new 6000 system from Direcway, and love it for email and internet searching. We tried Netgear's 624 router and found that it doesn't work with the modem. Why ? We think it is because the 6000 modem has built in router inside. We unplugged the router, and put on a hub to my machine, the host computer, and it works just great. We are now trying to find a bridge or access point that will provide fast enough speeds for my husband and son to get in INternet Satellite now. I like it better than DSL which had really slow times here in WA where we live in the afternoons and evenings, just about as slow as dial-up. Our dial-up was not reliable either since January 2004. Thought there had to be something better out there. There is, we found it. I love it ! Now... to have it installed on our RV is next. Just try it. cdh - April 2004

Direcway 6000 is great, very fast,I was promised back up dialup.....like Earhlink or my local phone coop Yucca. Directway wants $20 extra a month and Long distance. My Local Phone Coop is limited to the 4020 system.National had a better price + 6000 unit. I wanted to pay by the year. I was Promised Dial up backup+yearly payment.I should asked for the moon. The night my wifes Masters writtens need to be submitted to College. The sytem went down....Unresoved billing issues per tech. 12 hrs ..4 different case numbers...Customer service at hughes is a joke I was locked out .This page saved my wife a lot of grief ..

Direcway is incapable of online gaming and they FAIL TO MENTION it when you are looking for a solution for your internet needs. If you have anyone in your home that wants to network through the satellite with Sony (etc) the consumer should know that there are latency issues that cannot be resolved. the satellite is frequently locked up or slow. When you want it to work the most is usuallly when it fails. I have had the two way system for over a year now. The following is my experience with the direcway chat about my issue... Satellite sales tactics fail to mention that the satellite is not capable of online gaming such as Playstation. Here is a copy of my conversation with the Direcway online chat staff (partially edited to prtect private info). I have a question regarding usage and speed up/down with networked equipment... Please wait ... http://www.mydirecway.com/ dean has arrived to help you! dean says, "Hello, Thank you for contacting DIRECWAY Technical Support. This is Dean. Please give me a moment while I pull up your account information. " dean says, "Thank you for being online." dean says, "Could you please elaborate on your issue." You say, "Yes" You say, "I have two computers and 2 Sony Playstaions networked with Direcway" dean says, "Ok" You say, "When the Playstations are online there is a terrible lag." You say, "They are frequently disconnected and locked up. It is always certainly the satellite because both games lock up or lag" You say, "Is the satellite not capable of online gaming?" dean says, "You are correct. Satellite connection is not suitable for playing online games as online games require immediate response and this is not possible through DIRECWAY because of associated latency factors." You say, "Odd that noone has told me that prior to now. I have inquired previously only to be told it wasn't Direcway. Pretty bad deal. I think that you should at least tell customers when we are purchasing." dean says, "I apologize for the issue. I understand your concern over this. Well, what I can say is that you can try playing online games during the off-peak hours i.e when the internet congestion is not much" You say, "I was told it would work at high speeds and it was known that we had Sony Playstations. Odd sales tactic. Is there anything I can do to improve it? Can it be upgraded or is the satellite simply not capable?" dean says, "I am sorry to say it is not going to work at all." You say, "Would an upgraded account help?" You say, "Can you review my account information and inform me of my current contract status?" dean says, "An upgraded account is not going to help as any satellite based connection will have associated latency problems. The only way is you can try playing online games during off peak hours. " You say, "What are the off peak hours? Does the day of the week matter as well? Does is matter where my location is?" dean says, "Location does not matter. What you can try is try playing online games during the off peak hours i.e when there is not much of internet congestion. Off peak hours are late night hours or early morning hours." You say, "Thanks for your help Dean. I would like to ask about my account info." You say, "Am I still under contract?" dean says, "For your account information, I would request you to please contact our Billing Department on 1-866-347-3292." dean says, "Is there anything else I may help you with?" You say, "Ok then. I am going to post some of this information on the internet regarding the satellites capablities for future customers, so that they are informed. You have been a great help though. Thanks for being online." dean says, "My pleasure and I apologize for the issue again."

Ammar -May 21, 2004
I could not agree more that direcway STINKS! I had the system installed 2/22/03. And I have had NOTHING but TROUBLE! I am so frustrated. Today alone of I have spent 3 hours on the phone with "tech support" I say it like that because their tech support department is horrible!!! I have spent at least 50-60 hours on the phone with tech support in the last year. Has anyone had to take the cables off the back of their modem and touch them to remove electric static??? What a joke! These are just things they have you do so that you will think they are doing "something"!!!! My 4000 unit (which was replaced this January 04) has gone bad AGAIN! I don't want another 4000 because they have problems, but in order for me to upgrade I had to pay full price for the 6000. (no breaks, no customer service) So I could take up to two credits...one is $100 they will credit to my account if I return my 4000 unit. (I may keep it, I could always use a doorstop) The other is $100 credit if I commit to 15 MORE months of bad service. I ask what the penalty was if I did not complete 15 months. He said a $300 penalty. So lets paint this picture...I HATE direcway...I have to face 15 more months (until something better dsl/cable comes along) If I have an opportunity to change in that time, I will have to pay $300.00 to leave. I don't like being held hostage. So I opted to pay an EXTRA $100 now, so I could be free to make choices that are best for my life. So today I spent $100 to save $200 later. To beat it all...they said that my unit should arrive in 1-2 weeks!!!!! I'M USING DIAL-UP HERE!!! I'm trying to run a business! And of course...(customer service) "I'm sorry...I'm reading from a script, I have no brain, I have no authority, we don't let supervisors actually talk to the customers, they are too busy" Can you guess how I feel about direcway????
WithAnAttitude -June 1, 2004
I know exactly how you feel! I got direcway in 2002 and got rid of it before the 30 day money back guaruntee went up. It sucked. And in 02/04 i despritely went crawling back to it. I have had nothing but problems and oh yes i too have been told to touch the wires on the back of my modem together to remove static electricity. Direcway sucks but the only reason i have it is because i dont like to get 42kbps. Atleast when it works i can get 100kbps sometimes if the speed doesnt slowly decrease as it always does. I only have the Customer service and im ready to try the professional service... they "say" it holds the speed better and is able to run two computers at a steady speed which is probably bull. but what else are we going to do? we all live out in the boonies away from verizon, att, brighthouse and everyother god forsaken dsl/cable company out there. i cant wait till they offer everyone dsl and direcway is direcly out the door...

After reading some of the above letters all I can say is "what a mess"! Most of the issues sound like they could be attributed to bad installation work. See, I'm a Direcway installer. I have a Gateway Solo laptop, 130mhz, 32 megs of ram, and I get 695 kbps browsing and downnloading, any time of the day, with no problems whatever. This laptop does not even meet the minimum system requirements set by Direcway, but if my "antique" will do this, imagine what something new could do. No, the system is not ideal for online gaming because of the latency. But no one from Direcway would ever tell you it was. Don't blame the system for the salesman's song and dance. Remember, there are horror stories about DSL and cable out there too, if you look for them. Nothing is perfect. If you're considering a satellite system, find a dealer in your area and get a demo of the system before you buy anything. Don't buy anything the first time you look. Go during the worst possible weather. Ask questions. If you don't ask, you can't get mad that nobody gave you the information.

Direcway is the worst service for anything I have ever had the displeasure to be involved with. As a matter of fact my account has been inactive, closed for two years and today I got a bill in the mail for 200.00 from a collection agency for equipment charges that I paid along with the rediculous mothly service fees. The maddening thing about this is that it takes more time and energy to have the two banks I had send me copies of all my checks and sift through them looking for a years worth of information. Direcway refuses to send a copy of the billing history because "they do not have the ability to print the screens" If this isn't the biggest rip off please let me know what is? Paying for overpriced equipment twice and to be harrassed by a collection agency a year after the last transaction on the account and assurance from direcway that the account was closed and paid should be against the law.
TE -June 23, 2004
DirecWay is the worst company I have ever had the displeasure to be worked over by. You can't find a single person that can help. I have had a problem for 6 months that they refuse to repair and I keep getting handled by first level who can do nothing. DO NOT use this company. Ever.

The new 6000 is working very well for me. I have been working with it for 2 months now, so I feel it is very stable and able to work with 5 computers at the same time, including a couple of Mac. One Mac is running OS9.2 and the other one is moving at a fast pace in OS10.3. The Hughes hub control is fantastic. Anyone who can't appreciate this effort is nuts! Print servers are a challenge, of course, but a little creative planning and research can produce many solutions. The Mac conquest was especially exciting for me -- since I have hoped for speed for my G3 for several years. Now it can perform on at least 3 or 4 of the more popular brands made for PC trade on the Mac. You don't have to buy the expensive apple airport whatevers for hundreds of dollars. The Belkin USB adapter unit for less than $90. is easy to use and very fast. B or G is the question (7/22/04)! The linksys line in the "b" catagory in priced down to $30., as is the Belkin "b" and both work fast. I have casually rated the "g" models to be 40 to 60 percent faster than "b" models. Either seem fine to me. Here's hoping the adventure continues despite the usual sourgrapes for the nasty right. When will we learn to enjoy this unbelievable fulfillment of the Internet/Ethernet dream?

I've had the Direcway satellite Internet for about a week now and have had a few short outages but they were not much of a problem. The major problem seems to be when I try to download music or videos from WinMX or Morpheus, I get less than 2 kps speeds. My 14k dialup downloaded faster than that! But yet, I can use streaming vidoe with no problem. I'm using XP but don't know if that is the problem. Anybody else having this problem or a solution? And yes, I agree, the customer service is lacking. Each time I called, I think I was talking to someone in India...
Lynn M -August 4, 2004
From what I have heard, Direcway seems to be overpriced for what your get and there are rather large restrictions on what you download before you speed gets "throttled" down. The only way I would end up getting Direcway is if I had no means of Internet access. That means they would have to take away my dial-up...
Steve -August 11, 2004
I've had the DirecPC/Direcway service for over 4 years now, all 1-way..... It's not the most stable, changing to WinXP helped tremendously over the previous versions on Win98 and WinME. ICS works perfectly in XP, and networked between 4 additional clients. Download speeds vary, but never seem to fall below the advertised 400K, and have been as high as 1.5Mb speeds on several occasions. With that said, DSL, cable, and wireless are unavailable at this time here, so Direcway is the only affordable game in town. T-1, Frame relay, and even ISDN are MUCH more per month than the combination of local IP, 2nd phone line, and Direcway service.
Joe S -August 21, 2004
I have read everything each one of you has talked about and I'll do a lot more research before I head into this. I have lived in the country for 20 years just outside of a major city, but dialup is all that is here. I aware of weather conditions because I have Dishwork but in South Texas there is not too much overcast. I am concerned about the DOWNLOAD THRESHOLD. I could very easily download a 400 meg piece of software and then be "flagged" with dialup it might have taken days of non-stop downloading but I'm not use to being limited. Has anyone used STARBAND? They cost a lot more. Installation is high. But I am going to take some of your advice here. Like going to a dealer and seeing for myself what these systems are like. It's too much not to research all of this and in the end then I might keep dialup and wait the 10 years before real service ever comes to my area.

Been on Direcway DW600 2-way for a week now and had a few issues at first but they have been taken care of. The main thing I noticed as a trend with all the people that have had problems can usually be traced back to a poor install. My installer had a lot of experience in microwave/fiberoptic systems and I feel he did a good job on mine, only time will tell.

After 2 years of struggle and tears I have gone back to dial up. Yes dial up is slow but it is reliable. When it Direcway worked it worked well - for about a week and then - who knows why but its crawling again and back to tech support! I have spent just too many hours waiting for some guy in a third world country to tell me to disconnect the disk cables and remove the static electricity. Direcway is just not worth the money.

I have had th 6000 a week. And it has been down for most of the week. Last night Customer Service at Dway told me that the satellite moved in orbit, and they are working on moving it back in line. That is why my service is constantly up and down this week. They assured me this was not typical and that it would be fixed. It was not on my end, but it was the satellite itself. Does that sound strange to you?
Amy -October 21, 2004
Direcway is a system that accommodates the user without a choice other than dial-up. The system's limitations are not carefully explained to the user before purchase. The "fair access" and e-mail size restrictions are extremely frustrating and are not well thought out nor well managed. The service techs in India are not really knowlegeable and/or are following a dumb script. Operating management apparently does not care about your problems, not surprising since most of them are inherent in the system design and there is nothing they can do about it. Executives of this company apparently have no shame nor sense of pride in their product, they could do a lot better and must know it. Those of us without an alternative have to live with it, but we eagerly await the day we can take our Direcway system out behind the barn and shoot it!

I was looking to purchase 2 way satelite, but after reading all the comments, I must reconsider. The problem for us is that we are way out in the country in the north and the only other option is 26,400 dial-up. If anyone has any suggestions fell free to email me.
Joe Keunen -November 14, 2004
I just ordered Directway service and look forward to it being installed. Currently my only other option is dialup that never reaches speeds higher than 26.4kps. I hear that those of us in the south are more likely to get "reliable" service due to our geographic proximity to the satelites. I'm in Southwest, Florida so I'm hoping that my location plays a role in avoiding the horrific service that some of you are experiencing.

I've had direcway for a couple of years now and haven't had any major problems. My only gripe is that online gaming is impossible. But what can you expect when you live in the middle of nowhere like I do? The only alternative is dial-up. And anyone who says that dial-up is better than direcway is out of their gourd. My connection has been more reliable than my local hillbilly dial-up service ever was. If you have no other option (such as cable or DSL), go with direcway.
Brian B. -December 7, 2004
One month ago I switched from a DW4000 Professional system (which stunk!), to DirecWay's finest & fastest DW6000 with a .98m dish ...to the tune of roughly $1,300.00. My speeds are slower than they were with the DW4000, (but my signal strength certainly did increase ...to a 97). I have gotten nowhere after over 100 hours of waiting on hold to talk to idiots. Their latest trick has been to 'choke' my speeds during the day, so that I'm not much faster than a 56k modem ...and for $129.99 a month I dang sure expect at least 80% of their advertised speed, which is 1.5Mbps. The BEST I've ever seen, once, was 1088Mbps 'down', but the 'up' speed was less than 20. Hughes and their lies and deception have caused this customer to lose 100% of my investment, time ...and business. I wish I had remained with dialup and a fax machine. On the flip side, there are many satisfied customers. (But I don't know of a single one ...it is just what they tell me in an effort to make me think that I or my computers are at fault, and not anything to do with the way they conduct business. Please visit www.direcwaysux.com for a similar webpage such as this. (Warning: It is far more 'graphic' than here)!

If you would simply head to www.testmy.net, log in then post in the DirecWay Forum, they have a dude there named "The Reverend" (he's the DirecWay Moderator for the entire website) ...HE WILL GET YOUR DIRECWAY CONNECTION RUNNING AT FULL SPEED! I was just "turned on" to this info and earlier today he tripled my speed! (And I thought I was doing all that could be done ..hell, this guy is a retired Navy S.E.A.L and KNOWS HIS SATELLITES!!! lol.... Don't let DirecWay put the screws to you! Track down "The Reverend" and he'll make it so that DirecWay can't touch you or frig with your speeds ever again. C.del -January 11, 2005
Have had a two-way, DWay setup for a few months now. Have had some problems connecting with the satellite. However I've found lately that resetting the model 6000 (disconnecting the power to it for a couple of minutes and then reconnecting the power) has cleared them up every time, so far. I hope that continues to clear up our problems. It is a nuisance to have to do this every couple of days or so, but it’s better than dial-up. Bert

Can't keep a good man down? Hi everyone, I am deeply honored by your kind words and very humbled as well. To be honest, I was always doing more Direcway related support (and other computer related stuff) long before coming to "that" Forum. I am reprogramming my newest Server to be an Luxury Community for those interested and will have her online as soon as possible. For the time-being I am maitaining "trouble calls" using e-mail as usual. My address is listed but just in case it flubbs up you can reach me at tocg@direcway.com and I'll get back to you as quickly as possible, or if nothing else give me a quickie and and be added to the database so that when the Server is UP everyone will be notified automatically and THEN we will have a community where BS doesn't exist. For those who stand against me do not attempt sending me 'infected emails' or the like such as has been done over the past week. I used to wear a "black hat", I know my business and thus will return more trouble to you than you are able to handle. If you think differently ...hack me ....please. :) So folks, that's where we stand right now. Email support only until I get the Server up! Cheers! The Reverend

Like you I have been considering Direcway cause I live in the Sticks. I have yet to find any or many satisfied Starband 481/or/484 users. My friends with Direcway & the .74 Meter dishes have told me to saty away from them because the Upload is only 33Kbs with the Direcway 6000. Even if you pay 89. a month!!! Plus they also say the system goes down 2-4 hours per day for commercial traffic. Something Direcway hasn't told you is that a LOT f these systems are deployed in Iraq & Afghanistan right now & that you are SHARING satellite time with Military contracts that have a FIRST PRIORITY. Starband to my knowledge has no military contracts. Direcway system with .74 meter dish is not all that good signal wise. .98 is Average and the 1.2 Meter gives the better signal for the States for upload/download. Think I am going to go with the Ground Control Galilieo 2 watt / 1 meter dish. At least if I am going to be paying I want a VSAT that works. Direcway is overextended & not telling you the whole story. Consumers may wish to wait till Wild Blue comes out later in 2005, cause I bet Starband is going to have to come down off the high prices to stay in business.

BTW my friends that have Direcway only keep it because they can use it in their RV as well as their home. They are retired so having an Uplink capability is Not that important to them. However when working on the net as a Tele-Commutter or working on Websites. You must have at least a 128 uplink, that's the bare miniumum why pay 90 a month for just download speed, I can't see it.

For complete information, please consider coming to my website, and then navigate to the Direcway Forum and ask for The Reverend. He is the #1 tech for North, Central and South America when it comes to DirecWay issues. He does not work for them (he's a retired Navy S.E.A.L.), so you'll get the lowdown on how to go about getting the best possible speeds and such. Just ask for The Reverend and he'll be happy to walk you through the rest. Or, if you do not wish to "post" in a Forum atmosphere, just ask most anyone in the DirecWay forum for his e-mail address, and they will give it to you, and he'll answer you within a few hours or less. A highly dedicated man and extremely pleasant as well. (Just don't get him mad at you)! :) (jk)

Does anybody have any information using voip with the different Direcway systems? I am using a Direcway system in a very remote wilderness location, where there is no phone service of any kind.
Bob -February 5, 2005
OK I have been until Friday a longtime Direcpc/way customer I had the system for 8yrs! Let me put some things out there crystal clear for everybody. 1. I believe most of direcways customer live in the "country" and have no other choice except dialup as was my case. 2.for the price you pay they are making a killing since you will spend hundreds of hours on tech support fixing all the problems your self with someone you can barley understand! 3. The FAP fair access policy is not fair at all it does not allow you to do anything that broadband is known for like internet radio, TV, downloading big files sharing video e-mail etc. 4. I almost upgraded to the 6000 system from the 4000 but thankfully they gave me a hard time and wanted a lot more money so I didn't upgrade. If you get a chance get rid of the poor service you are getting I almost went back to dialup just so I could get reliable service! Did I resolve my issue? YES! They just installed cable internet on my street I had it installed Saturday the result? Im sitting here downloading songs from I-tunes for my Ipod listing to an internet radio station and crusing the internet and downloading e-mail all at the same time while it's raining and blowing very hard out side something I could never do with direcway. Just happy reliable and warm fuzzes inside. Good luck to all of you!

I have a Direcway 2 way system. I've had it for about 3 yrs. This is what I don't like about their product. Their fair access policy and the fact that they don't provide any warning to inform you, that you’re reaching the fair access policy (FAP) limit. The only warning you receive is when your download speed drops to about nothing. I pay $59 a month for a less than enjoyable experience. Sometimes I feel like a carrier pigeon would be more efficient. DSL averages about $38 to $49 for 250 Download and 150 Upload and $45 to $59 for 750 download and 250 upload full time. Cable averages $29 for 800 Download and 250 Upload. I have many friends who have either DSL or Cable. They don’t deal with an FAP. They can download as much as they want. Upload is never an issue, as far as I know. I don't think its right, that they put an FAP on anyone, just because have a Satellite and they’re out in the boonies. They may as well put a sticker on the box that says, “Once activated we have you by the nether regions.” Someone has to come up with a way that Satellite users can still use their Direcway or Satellite system without the necessity of an FAP.

First of all, excuse me for my English - it is not so good. I searched the internet for finding a satellite dish/equipment producer who provides a satellite dish/equipment wit internet access included in the dish/equipment price. I found this page. I don't know if it is exactly what I wsa looking for, but if not, I hope you can give me at least some information. The satellite dish/equipment I search is for personal use, not for business. If there are some answers you could provide, plesa let me know them. My e-mail address is brasovcalin@yahoo.com and maybe it could be useful to say that I live in Romania. Thank you for your attention. Best regards, Calin.

I have had the Direcway service for about a month and it is much better than cable it is cosistantly over 800 kbps vs cable at less than 500 kbps I however was told about the gaming issues before install and it meant nothing to me as I do not online game. I was charged almost a hundred dollars for cable internet alone plus the cost of basic cable .I now save nearly $70 a month and unlike cable I have a contract so they can not raise my rate every other month.I agree for some (mostly online gamers) it s not the perfect solution but I could not be happier

Direcway/Hughes gives the worst customer service I have encountered, and their internet service is barely faster than modem. They will also sell your information; don't use them

I have read all comments here. I have just one question. Does the system work well for general internet usage? -- general surfing, travel reservations, shopping, etc... I thought I read a previous comment that it was difficult to access secure sites to enter credit card data. Thanks for any info.

I've been on hold for a total of 10 hours trying to troubleshoot why this DirecWay system cannot access secure sites via internet connection sharing. They've told me that they do not support connections on more than one computer... so I explained that it is only connected to one computer. They asked for the O/S: Server 2000. They said they do not support connections to this O/S. Is there anyone out there who cannot access secure sites using this system who has an answer as to how to make it work?
Kevin -April 29, 2005
I have several customers using DW6000 with Server 2000 and have had no problems. They all have 4-8 workstations accessing the internet. These customers operatie insurance sales offices and are accessing secure sites. So I do not think your problem is with DW6000. Perhaps the issue is with your router and/or proxy settings. jt Heflin, AL

I am extremely dissapointed with Direcway, first of all, it is about as slow as dial-up (or maybe mollasses)!!! To add insult to injury, we just found out that we have to move. To move your direcway service costs 200.00 or more, and because I am still under the 12 month contract, it will cost me 300.00 to cancel the service. What a complete rip-off!!!!

The first time we did set up we had to call for help from our salesman and he called us right back and walked us thru our problem. We have had the direcway 4020 system for years, it was great. Then we made the mistake of upgrading to the 6000. There are so many web sites I can't access now, spend hours with direcway to get 1 site to work, only to find a new one does not work. Then the fix only works part time. It's killing my business and college classes.

If you think your Direcway Satellite cannot do something, think again. There is a man called The Reverend who is the owner/president of the Equorial de Costa Rica Corporation and he owns hundreds of websites thoughout the 'Americas' in English and Spanish. YOU can find him at www.equorial.com (just sign up because there are no fees and no tricks). He will help you directly (just ask him) or you will find tons and tons of extremely useful information in lots and lots of Forums. That is just one site of many, and Equorial membership now exceeds 800,000 Direcway users (that is almost half of the people that have Direcway ...so do you all those people could be wrong)? Hello!!!!!!!!!! Hell No!!! www.equorial.com is a "peach" of a website and The Reverend is a retired US Navy SEAL that knows his ****. If you are having troubles (and most of your are), you can easily put an end to it this week (three days or less he says) and you'll be doing things (including gaming) with Direcway that everyone else will tell you is impossible. I am living proof and I'm "hooked" on EQ (Equorial.com). Check it out or you will only be cheating yourself. Thanks for hearing me out everybody!

I've had Direcway since it came out and I paid top buck for the package. I have been very dissapointed with the service and customer support. I have it because I have no other choice. At the smallest chance of rain I loose the signal and have to wait sometimes hours for it to come back. It's not a good way to run a business but until something better comes along I'll just keep paying them.

There is probably no way to make anything perfect, but I will attest that an up and coming website (new to the USA but it has been around in Espa?ol since 1991) is now the Official Online Tech Support Reference for Direcway and Earthlink 'powered by Direcway'. What the site has to offer is mind-blowing. My speeds were increaed from 298Kbps to 900+Kbps in under an hour. They have a members-only e-mail system that is 100% secured with any size mailbox you need (just ask!), and a guy they call "the reverend" is the owner of everything, is a retired navy seal that lives in costa rica and is now helping everyone with their satellites all over south america, latin america and more recently the usa. The usa site has about 200 members and growing but over the Equorial Corporation helps out over 800,000 people by simply picking up where direcway leaves off. This is admirable since 'the reverend' doesn't charge you a cent for this service. You just can't lose anything but you can damn sure gain about everything. Please check it out for yourself and save on Excedrin PM headaches. Go to www.equorial.com (or .net. or .org), get a free account, free e-mail, and get into something "hot" that just keeps getting hotter as the Corporation and websites keep expanding for the amount of users ...and best of all it just has to be the friendliest place on the web. Don't miss out everyone! Go "EQuorial" ....you'll love it! cb
cb -July 11, 2005
"The Deal" with online gaming is simply that a Consumer Account doesn't have the speeds necessary to effectively game. Neither do the Professional Accounts. However, I personally use Direcway Business Accounts (2 of them; 2 3.5m dishes and 2-DW6000's, and on either system my wife and myself can browse, run several websites (over 404 of them), and our children can "game" ...with total speeds averaging 800Kbps or higher. There are other ways you can game ...like get back into a DW4000 and have speeds that will hit as high as 2.2Mbps consistently. Best of all, most Direcway Customers are now coming to any number of our websites (they are all free), and finding out exactly how to tune/tweak their systems exactly as they should be for usage with Direcway and Earthlink powered by Direcway satellite connectivity. Interested? Then we'd love to have some good members join the rest. Come to www.equorial.com (or .net or .org), and either track me down or just get into the Direcway Section for extremely in-depth assistance. Hasta Luego! mike -July 16, 2005
Seems as though I have others that feel the same about DirecWay. "Ya call this quick"? They taught a 500KBS download, they don't tell you that there is a "Fair Access Policy" nor the limits. As you approach this limit speed deteriates to less than a 2400baud modem...... And the speed test? Gosh how fast is a 32k ping packet go? A lot faster than a 1 meg file. The best I have gotten on a clear day on a download was 108Kbs.. Sounds like they do NOT conform to there advertised specifications. This sure mislead me. How about you? Terry July 31, 2005

The Reverend is a fake. If this Reverend is a millionaire then why is he sitting in front of a comptuer all day answering stupid ?'s. It's because he's not he's in it for the money and other things, and i know the site is free but there are alot of other ways to make money off it. And if you are a millionaire why would you be putting up and ******** about having direcway for the last 5-6 years, when you could of just bought a better internet provider like databahn and lots of others that are not new to providing satelite internet service SO ENTER THE SITE AT YOUR OWN RISK. \'YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED\' All you people over at Reverend\'s fanasty land are a joke and stupid so is the website. I know just as much about Direcway then the so called Reverend and his so called wife Cricket, in fact i dont think he has a wife, in his profile at testmy.com he had down he was a women so must be a SHEMALE. And you people think your so secure with using the email there it is not and secure then any other email and Reverend can read your email\'s. And what most people dont know is ,when you visit the site the Reverend can and does see into your computer he/she can tell where you came from and track you to where your going, and that\'s only the start of it. Dont believe me ask a website owner. Good site with only 300 member\'s lol, and how many Direcway user\'s in U.S. about 500,000.

I have read all of the above comments. I too, live in the sticks and am stuck with dial up which is great unless I want to download large files or music. I get an average connection speed of 44-46kbs, but I had to study modems. I finally bought a USRobutics 5699b which obtains the higher speeds, I use a program, FreeDownloadManager, which really speeds downloads by downloading 4 or 5 sections at one time. I want faster downloads and was ready to get DirectWay, get rid of my land line and associated long distance. The $59 montly fee would for DirectWay is cheaper than the other two. I have very good cell phone coverage with Verizion. Thanks to you folks, I will keep what I have, and drive 2 hrs to my daughters house when I need to download large files.

They tell me my checks are not being received, however I see in my bank statement the checks are being paid to D-Way. I have asked them to seed me there record of payment on my account and they will not send me one. They tell me to go to there internet service to see my account but I can not get into the system. i would never ever recommend direcway for anything but the tolit. Stuck in a remote area
Harold Zweiacher -January 25, 2006
I've had direcway for 2 years now. If cable/dsl is available for you, I highly suggest investing in it over the satellite even though the service is quite nice for end users who do not have that option. In my experience, the service occasionally goes out when the weather is cloudy/stormy and sometimes their DNS servers go down which forces you to perform DNSes on your own so you can connect to a website if you know how to do that. It's rare that happens and they usually come back up within an hour. With the DW6000 model, using the internet download manager I usually download at a rate of 120kb/s (kiloBYTES not kilobits) The DSL I have at my office is about 150kb/s (which is 1.5mbit/256), so DSL is most definately faster, but still 120kb/s is a LOT better than dialup. I was stuck on dialup for 6 years. If it's possible I suggest getting the older DW 4000 model. Since the software is installed on your computer and not in the hardware, when you run download managers like IDM you can download FASTER, YES FASTER than DSL. At least until the FAP (fair-access policy) kicks in. With the DW 4000 model and IDM I experienced download speeds at 2megs/sec. It was extremely fast and even faster than DSL. These rates are simply not ever seen with the DW 6000 model. (Just to add, that extra speed with the DW 4000 still didn't allow me to satisfy my gaming habits. It was still too laggy for gaming, unless you're playing Virtual Pool or some games on yahoo.) I upgraded because the DW 4000 model uses a USB connection instead of an ethernet connection, and in order to setup a home network you would have to use the ICS found in windows xp. ICS requires the 'mother' computer to be turn on 24/7, not to mention ICS is SLOW! When trying to setup a network with ICS, my laptop could only load sites like google that had very small download requirements. If I tried to open a site that had a few images on it, the connection simply wouldn't work. ICS sucks and I definately don't recommend using ICS. It may be possible to setup network with the DW 4000 without the ICS. If you have a USB->Ethernet adapter (small adapter that turns the usb cable of the DW 4000 model into an ethernet at the end) then you may could use that adapter and hook it into your router/WAP. I bought a bunch of these adapters at Big Lots a few months ago. If I knew adapters like this existed I would have stuck with the DW 4000 model. As far as I know their is no way to get around the FAP with direcway. You're just stuck with it. They should at least raise that number a little or give you a monthly amount to work with. The only way to conquer the FAP is to use a download manager where you can set download limits. I use IDM and I set my limits at 120mb/2 hours. Going to see how that works. My experience with direcway over the past few years has been fairly good. The service seems to be improving as I go along. It's pretty darn reliable for me, unless there's some severe weather brewing. Sometime this year I believe Hughes is also launching another Satellite that will allow for higher download rates (32mbps) and also faster upload rates (8mbps). The new technology is suppose to bypass the network center so that the satellite has direct access to the internet. This could possible fix the latency problem, however I bet ping rates will not be like cable. The service isn't going to available probably until next year though. Read on their site. It's called "SpaceWAY." I'm sorry I've rambled on for so long, but I just wanted to give the whole story with direcway and Hughes. If you're thinking about getting direcway, then go ahead and do it, but only if you have nothing else to choose from. Thanks, Evan

i want my money back as well. ive only been up and running 2 hours and im not happy. i think i may just let them keep my money, opt out, pay the fines, and repoint this dish to the military networks lol. there is no reason that using tracert the first node times out, they advertise a half second delay, thats 1 second each way, that should not time out, but try it with directway, it times out the first node <the sat intself in space> every time. this is the issue causing you to not be able to play online games.

I, like most people live in the sticks, 2 miles worth of cable will cost my husband and I $53,000 dollars so were told, and DSL isnt available either. We both play World of Warcraft Online, almost religiously, and if theres just too much going on on our screen at any given time our ms can shoot as high as 16,000, making it impossible to do anything. Our "normal" latency is roughly 700 ms if were not in a overly busy area on the game, were wondering if anyone who actually has a satellite knows from experience in MMORPG's, if it would be an improvement? We arent overly concerned with dowload rates, cause we can skip that process with a flash drive downloading the files at my husbands work, were mostly concerned with actual gameplay, doesnt seem like it could be much worse than what we are experiencing now, especially when our ping goes anywhere over 5k ms we may as well call it quits. Thanks any info would be appreciated.

We are planning to buy a house and we found a house that we both fall in love with when we saw it. We have been looking for a house for months and this one finally came up. Today we found out that there is no DSL or cable available in that area and it is not happening soon. Well, I have been using high speed internet for years and there is no way for me to go back to dial-up. Well, there is one more option for us if we want to get that house - getting a satellite internet. We dont play online games and only use Internet on web surfing, chat, and I have one of my own website ( not too much pictures loading and not on daily basis). I am wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions about what to get and please also tell me the positive and negative for satellite Internet. Thanks! Live in the middle of woods

Like the others before me, I live in the country. Time warner cable wanted to charge me $7,000 to do a direct bore under the road, and did I mention they'd five me $1,500 rebate. So, I'm using 6000 and have done ok with it, except customer service takes forever. Thank god for speaker phones. My speed seems good, although not as good as the high speed at my office. And, this turnover to Hughes is a real pain, still can't get into my personal e-mail.

why won't you respond to my emails about needing to have all my emal go to Netscape and be able to use netscape for sending all my emails. It is rich in options and webmail that you are using is just small print with no options, we hate it to the point of doing anything to get our netscape back, we are angry. spending more money and getting less, yes, angry--- Joseoh Burnett wehope@hughes.net

Made the huge mistake of not reading up on D-way before calling for installation. Long story short, when I called to ask why my IE browser wouldn't load msn.com's first page in under 3-5 minutes I was told by their tech support, "you have to understand, sir, the satellite is hundreds of miles out in space and it's not going to be as fast as cable or other DSL service." Just a clarification for you compliments of the contractor that installed our system: it takes an average of .75 seconds for the signal to go from your computer to the satellite, .75 seconds to the server you are hitting, .75 seconds to return to the satellite, and .75 seconds from the satellite to your dish - a total of 3 seconds on average to begin any data exchange IF you're peaked out on signal and various other aspects of satellite technology that determine the signal speed. Mistake #2 was not reading the service agreement prior to attempting to cancel. They instantly hit my debit card for $400 claiming I had not established a billing address for them to bill. I asked why the billing address would be anything different from the house they installed the dish on and they said it was my responsibility to have provided them a billing address. When I asked to speak to a supervisor I was told they were too busy and asked if I could be called back in 3-5 business days. When I insisted on staying on the line for a supervisor they said it would be 2-24 hours of hold time and then 'accidentally' hung up on me. Waiting to connect to a "customer service" representative will take 3-15 minutes of hold time, but you can usually connect to one within seconds if you select the option to 'upgrade' your equpiment or service. I asked if they could delay my cancellation until I could provide them with a billing address and they said it was too late, my account was already cancelled. Remote internet freedom or not, I would not suggest this service to anyone who absolutely did not have a dire need for internet service. Not to mention the connection speed was just slightly faster than dial-up service. I've told everyone I know about my experiences with this company. I've never been treated so poorly by a 'service' related company in my life. I'm a pretty calm person when it comes to lodging what I believe are reasonable compaints and was met (consistently) with a defensive and snide response on the part of Direcway/Hughes. It seems fairly obvious to me that they realize they have a very captive audience and have found a way to rip off their customers once they have snared them in their contractual trap. Shame on me for not having researched and read appropriately; shame on them for ripping off people that become disenchanted with their lack of service.

Direcway(Hughes.net) has to be the WORST isp i have ever had the displeasure to use. After spending 600 bucks and 60 bucks a month i feel that ive been subject to false advertisment. This is the worst product and the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Do not get Direcpc! I do not know where they find their customer service representitives. I have had Direcpc for a year I would say its the worst thing I ever bought and I would stongly recomend dial-up before wasting your money
debbie -May 20, 2006
First thing, before you purchase Direcway, read over it's policies! All of the FAP information, and legal information is on there website, and you even hear a recording of what you're agreeing to before you can setup an install. So let's stop with the "Oh they never told me.." story. It gets old. I've had it for years and never had a problem other then the 500ms latancy Reguarding the 500ms delay, its SAT internet folks, using radio waves! Radio waves can only go so fast up and down the 23,000 miles to the sat and back. That's common sense...come on now. And as for tech support being outsourced to india, name a company that does not have at least one department in india, it's not even the entire tech department, just the basic techs. BE PATIENT AND YOU MIGHT GET SOMEWHERE!
Anon -May 29, 2006
Also, reguarding the switch to hughes.net addresses, just put your full username with @hughes.net, its that simple folks! Common sense, remember? And besides, its OUTLOOK EXPRESS, which is not made by hughesnet, so why call them for support? CALL MICROSOFT! DUH! And then you complain about spending hours on the phone for software that hughesnet sees as 3rd party? I swear some people...

I've been using Direcway for almost 5 years now. Satellite is my ONLY option for intnernet in my area. I can't even get dialup where I live because my phonelines are spliced and the phone company refused to fix them. I've always had latency issues and lost connection in bad weather. I can understand that. Having to power cycle and do static discharge on the modem is a pain. At least power cycling is easier with the new setup which allows it to be done on computer but I still have to do static discharge (it involves disconnecting the coaxial cables and reconnecting them after touching them to discharge static). We need internet to order supplies, pay bills, research, keep in touch with friends and relatives, etc. I've had problems with the satellite just going out for no apparent reason (when weather was completely clear). One time I spent 3 hours on the phone with tech support before they told me that the satellite that transmitted to my area had "dropped". Speaking of tech support, I'm fortunate to have spent time in Singpaore where I grew accustomed to different accents and can for the most part understand Indian ones. I have on occassion had to ask the tech support to speak louder. It irritated me when I got the ones who couldn't seem to think for themselves and were reading from a script. I've had ones that were rude and ones that talked to me like I was stupid and didn't seem to grasp that I know how to find the Start button in windows. Once I told them I had worked in tech support before some of them started treating me like a normal person. One guy even flirted with me. I was fairly satisfied with my service up until it became Hughes.net. First off, the instructions on how to setup pop3 email that they had on their website were incorrect. They said to NOT put the @hughes.net part but when I finally got through to tech support after 2 hours they told me it had to be put that way. The new setup does not seem to work with Foxmail and I really don't like Outlook Express but now I'm stuck with it or webmail. The new setup also seems to conflict with my AVG anti-virus software. My latency on World of Warcraft has gotten worse.I used to be able to have 3 accounts going smoothly with about 1200ms ping (which is average for me). But now if more than one is on it shoots up over 2k. I dared to try logging in to my EverQuest account since then. When the changeover first happened I was having some issues and attempted to use their online chat. It worked with Direcway. But now the connection is so bad that it times out. How sad is it that their service is so slow that users cannot connect to their technical support chat? When I first signed up for Direcway they told me I would have 800k down and about 50k up. It was never actually that fast but it was better than nothing. I didn't know that the DW6000 would drop my speed to 500k up (the sales people told me it would be faster than the DW4000). Another thing they told me (in both writing and on the phone) was that the FAP cap would go into effect if I loaded more than 20Mb per hour. If on the rare occasion I did exceed that amount they said it would be capped for only an hour or two (which was somewhat true-- longest wait was 4 hours). Ever since it became Hughes.net I have been having more errors on my webpages, I have to keep refreshing. More frequently having to restart the modem, oh, and the limit for the FAP was lowered. One day my internet just completely stopped working and I had to call them. Took me a long time to get through but when I finally did they told me my bandwidth was capped and that I could not use the internet at all for the next 8 to 12 hours if I wanted it to be uncapped. I hadn't even been loading that much. Then the tech told me that the cap took effect if I loaded more than 16Mb in 4 hours. I know they want to give people a fair chance to use the internet, but for the price we are paying for this "service" and the fact that they actually lowered the limit really *******me off. They should at least have a minimum that they can drop it to. I talked to someone at tech support and asked them if I would have a higher limit for my FAP if I switched to a more expensive plan and he said no. He said I could load faster but I asked what the point in loading faster would be if my bandwidth would then be completely cut off in an even shorter period of time than usual. The other day I hadn't been capped but the internet wasn't working at all. I keep having problems with the TCP acceleration. The weather was clear but there was no reason for it to be out. I'm seriously thinking about finding another satellite service (is there any other service that is better and does not require dialup for upload?). Hopefully things will smooth out and they will get their act together before I have to resort to that.

I have had problems with my dw6000 they seem to have started around FEB-06, after several calls to tech support & talking to advanced tech they sent me a new modem (refurbished). It worked somewhat ok but still having problems & my warranty has expired but I keep going round & round with the 1st tech support guys (if I didnt know how to plug in my computer they might be able to help me) but I wish I could talk to actual tech about my problem. I am still having degrading problems & extremely high latency problems. I was talking to 1st tech & told them I just saw my modem restart 5 times while being on hold & talking with her. She told me "well thats ok just let it finish" LET IT FINISH, I have never had my modem restart before on Its own!! I am not happy with DW right now. I would just like to get some good tech support and have them actually fix my problem for once. I am trying to get line installed but not having much luck they dont want to run it just for 1 person, I am only 300 ft from the pole :( then I would have super fast cable & it would be 1/2 the cost. Though DW is better then dialup.

My name is Damon Mueller, I'm the owner of testmy.net. I was browsing around the internet looking at threads in forums around the internet that contained my site name... I like to read what people say about my site as much as I can. First of all, if you don't beleive that I'm really the owner of testmy.net go to my site and click "contact" on the bottom of any of the pages and ask me... make sure you reference this page so I know what your talking about. :) -- When searching this page for "testmy.net" I found some stuff talking about the reverend. Alright, that guy was CRAZY! I gave him moderating rights when the site was a much smaller site because he seemed to know what he was talking about..... he eneded up being insane, he was banned only a few weeks later. He has multiple personalities and as someone put it he lives in his own little world. Any post that is supposed to be from someone besides him that talks crap about testmy.net..... just assume that's him because it is. He would use the fact that most direcway users are going through a proxy as a way to give himself praise by making fake account and acting like he was someone that he helped. The guy is nuts.. he is fake, his wife is not real.. and 90% of the members on his website (which is now defunct.. of course) are in fact himself, talking to himself. So, think for yourself go to my site and judge for yourself. :) ---- why do you think his site is already dead? Have a good one guys, I know this topic is old but I thought I would speak in defense of my baby, testmy.net ;-)

I WAS interested in using the service for a small WISP in MExico. Most businesses here in Mexico are a fraud and a ripoff like TELMEX who sells DSL plans that normally only provide 20-25 percent of their advertised bandwidth over 1 kilometer from the telco. They should move their headquarters here to Mexico where sad, incompetent business practice is the norm, expected and allowed. My experience om first contact was very poor with a distributor in Florida. I emailed them and asked them about five specific questions about the service for a small WISP. They did not asnswer 1 question and asked for my coordinates and tranceiver information so they can turn on a new subscription. Very poor, very unprofessional. I need to check into this service more. I will record their customer service and sales. If it is as sad as everyone says I will post it on my webpage. I hate liars thiefs and bad presidents.
Slav -August 5, 2006
Oh I also have to give them a chance. I do not feel optimistic but there must be happy customers out there. Is there any ISP's using this service as a backbone? I would like to hear from someone using the service for an ISP and having good luck. I see some clowns trying to get over a thoudsand dollars a month here in Mexico for the same advertised speeds. I was unable to get an answer from thier salesmen so its up to the public.....thumbs up or thumbs down??????????????????? ALso any reports on the new 7700 modem????wdzkln

I have the DW6000 model. I have been using DirecWay/HughesNet for probably more than a year now. It's crap, period. More than 90% of the time, the connection isn't much faster than my old dialup connection. More than half the time, pages don't load, and it is a struggle trying to get files to download, because they just stop downloading. They have a diagnostic page where you can check the status of your connection, and it's worthless, and full of lies. One time, I couldn't get any pages to load (for hours)...I tried the Aol browser, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer, when the diagnostic page finally loaded, it said that there was nothing wrong with my connection...and yet pages still wouldn't load. That's not even the worst part, after months and months of my internet speed being SLOWER than dialup, I tried to contact them...once, twice...three times...and got no response. I didn't get an automatic response, that was four months ago, and still no response. The internet connection is horribly unreliable, and shorts out ALL the time for brief seconds, sometimes hours, sometimes days, and when it is working...it's slow...really, really, really slow. It's a crime that these people subject their customers to such treatment. Honestly, if any other internet service was available in my area, I would take it...without another thought. Please don't make the same mistake I did, don't spend $600.00++ dollars on setup fees, and then hundreds of dollars every year after that for such horrible, horrible service. Unless you are in the middle of the woods and have no other option, DON'T DO IT!!! Seriously...don't!! Trust me, I've been a customer for more than a year now...if you have any other option, DON'T CHOOSE DIRECWAY / HUGHESNET!!!

bob -September 24, 2006
There is not an online video game made that is decently playable on satellite internet. That is, unless you like playing slow motion games with a ping time of 700ms. Give it up, it will never happen. The round trip time for the actual rradio waves to get to the satellite and back to earth is terribly prohibitive to anything real-time.
Hughes Customer -September 27, 2006
The latency is only partly prohibitive of real-time communications. I have successfully implemented VoIP over a Hughes Sat link. Games however are completely out of the question as they don't require high bandwidth as much as they require low latency connection (>100ms). The satellite latency of >700ms makes gaming move like moleasses in a snow storm. I have the newer DW7000 modem, and routinely download at 135-165 KBps (bytes NOT bits) without any problem. That is until the FAP restriction kicks in. If you are planning on downloading anything big, you will need to throttle your bandwidth usage to about 44KBps (bytes NOT bits) to avoid hitting the FAP (Fair Access Policy) limit and having Hughes clamp your bandwidth to nearly dialup speeds for 8 hours or so. 44Kbps will allow you to download indefinitely without getting FAP'd. Even with all of the usage restrictions, it is totally worth it. Keep in mind that nearly all of the comments on this page are years old, and do not reflect the current state of affairs where satellite broadband is concerned. It has come a long ways. If all you have available in your area is dial-up, and can afford the $65 or so per month, it is totally worth it as a rural broadband alternative. No, it will never compare to 9Mbps cable internet, but it far exceeds dialup and is beyond compare to such. SophWise Solutions http://www.sophwise.com http://www.sophwise.com/designs

DirecWay is, without a doubt the worst co. I have EVER dealth with. The tech dept. is in India and they don't speak my brand of English and they will not transfer you to advanced tech (in the states) without an act off God. I finally told them that Ghandi was a *** and I was going to have Pakistan nuke them if they didn't transfer me. They did....but still no help.
Jim Stolee -December 3, 2006
I have searched all around the Hughesnet web site and the mention about FAP is sketchy at best. It will tell you how many MB can be downloaded before it slows down, but not the amount of time. It uses very vague language about "normal users" and say you can download Netscape or Adobe with no problem, but nothing about larger downloads over time. Is there a monthly limit? A daily limit? Hourly? It says excessive usage in 1-4 hour continuous time. So what is the limit exactly?
glassguy213 -December 6, 2006
In general it works OK .. but at times it drops to about 1/2 dialup .. downtime is very minimal I run an internet cafe with 6 machines plus wireles and as long as I stay away from large uploads it is livable, but I will change to cable when it becomes available .... Paul
Paul -December 18, 2006
Not sure why all you have problems. I have had this service for 3+ years. In that time i did have a rec. go bad, but they got a new one to me in a couple days. I also experienced downtime of about 2 days total with outages of about 1 day each. Other than that, it has been flawless. The problems were all in the first year i had it. Upgraded to the new rec. no problem. I live in the sticks so this beats the pants off of dial up. I get 120KB/sec out here too. Whats so hard to understand about the FAP... it's a bucket of data...if you use it all in an hour(bucket is empty) then it refills at a set rate(like turning on the tap, it only goes so fast)...so you need to wait to download a bucket again, but you can still surf as normal if you give it 10-20 mins to fill the bucket enough to get you going quick again. If you can get cable or DSL, DO IT! Otherwise, DWay is a good alternative to dialup. Yes, a bit higher priced than DSL/Cable/Dialup, but what are you going to do?

Hi, Im now a satellite internet user (might i add i regret it but i signed a contract without thinking about what i could be getting myself into) and before i got satellite internet i was told and i thought myself that highspeed internet thro satellite was the exact same as internet thro cable/dsl. I found out that it wasent shortly after the guy came to install it he said "i hope you dont plann to play any shoot em up games, this internet connection has HUGE latency" at that moment it felt like i had just shot myself in the foot, relizeing i had just spent over 700$ (700$ for the dish and 116$ monthly)i intended to use this connection to play world of warcraft just like the other guy but now am stuck in a 2 year contract and if i want to get out of it have to pay 455$. so what i thought would be a nice 700kbps internet connection is now a laggy *** unstable connection thats takes 3 seconds just to send and recive information. Anyone who is thinking about getting satellite internet i would warn you to find other solutions, i have 26kbps internet dial-up before this and i used to play NeverwinterNights online with ease and Soldier of Fortune2 and Diablo2 now with this 700kbps connection i can barley do any of those things... think twice before you get into things like this take my advice. i know i was being dumb but it could happen to anyone. Regards Matt Mclaughlin

hughes sux. they ought to arrest their management for lying about their company's services. it is the very worst service i have seen. that is about all one can say. they lie about their download speed, mask free access policies where if you download 30mgb per hour for about three hours they throttle back on your download speed and drop it from 100 kps to 2-3kps. their tech service is an outright abomination; using "bob" from bangalore at level 1, an indian with no knowledge of the english language or hughes system's technology to help you. you must scream at them to move you up level upon level asking to speak with a supervisor just to get any assistence. when you ask for the name of the director of technology they refuse to give any name or address they lie about your services and when you use the system from 5 pm to midnight you never have download speeds that approach broadband. never again with these lying bozos. if i had the president of hughes within arm's reach it would take three people to keep me from choking the SOB.

Direcway is my first choice, as my second choice is a heavy burdend cable system with lots of local problems and a wireless system with all types of outages with no local support. as for the FAP of Direcway all updates are done while iam a sleep and i try not to download the max amount yes it is a pane but some times it as easy as a restart. No worse than my computers at work. Say yes to direcway

This entire dialogue has been an interesting and helpful read. I have been giving satellite some serious consideration. The last thing I need is more techno headaches and poor custorme service... get enough of that from the USPS, UPS, FEDEX, cell service, the local grocery, etc. I think I'll stay with my slow, reliable dial-up.

Is there anyone out there that has hughes net and can play xbox live without any problem?
Ryan -February 9, 2007
I have Direcway/Hughes, and have just finished my required contract period. I'm rolling my Hughes dish into the street tomorrow and running it over with my Jeep, after Wild Blue is installed. I echo all the problems above--tech support from India (WORTHLESS tech support I should say), ridiculously low speeds, outages lasting days, etc, etc. I went to peoplepc.com as a backup--it was about 5 times as fast as my "high-speed" Hughes. Pretty sad.... This with Hughes' professional package and a 6000 modem... I don't have cable available, which in our area could download more in one minute than Hughes could do in days (I used to live near here where I could get Adelphia cable). Don't waste your time or money--just get dial-up and another phone line (MUCH cheaper and faster) or try Wild Blue. Their customer service is in Denver, Colorado, NOT INDIA. Also, they (Wild Blue) just launched another satellite. Hughes hasn't launched new hardware in quite some time, but is spending A LOT on advertising.... thanks for nothing Hughes. You've been a collosal waste of time and money!

I had direcway for about 5 years and the service was pretty good at first and then they started trying to get me to upgrade to the better 6000 system. It seemd for the next six months the service was getting slower. I finally upgraded and got it all going in my RV Site I live at. Then a few months later they started talking about upgrading to the new 7000 system. Then the service on the 6000 system started getting slower. It is all a big scam and like many the past two years I had tech problems and ended up with some tech in India or other 3rd class country Why I ask So I cancelled my service and now have a Blackberry 803e something like that and it is my do everything phone, email, wireless modem (Little Slow like dialup) but it has never been down thru sprint. It also has built in GPS and mapping of the whole damn Us. Works good as a street guide. But anyway I wanted to know if I could uses my old dish and System 6000 for something else that is coming down the airways. Someone told me to turn the dish up to the sky and use it for a Bird bath Gordon

I had this hughes net and I aint having no Problems it works great good reliable internet searching good for Only game play on my X-Box 360 and i would recomended it to any one that has a disition between dial-up and this. I had Cable internet at 3000 Kbps and the hughes net is not that much slower. But they are comming out with a new sattlilite comming out this summer in 2007 wich is promising any one with the hughes net dircway deal to be using the new sattilite wich is a promissing 16 Mb Up-load and a 30 Mb download wich Im really looking fowered to.

I've had my DW7000 about 2 years now. The service is quite reliable, but in the last year, more & more video sites have come online so I've been reaching my FAP "limit" regularly to the point of frustration. Having a cap on my "high speed" seems like I'm not getting what I pay for. My friends with cable don't have this problem and they pay about half of what I pay for my service. To be reduced to "dialup speed" after 2 hours of high speed is like driving a Porshe then suddenly getting in a Ford Escort. It makes you wanna get out & walk instead! Until there is another option, I'm stuck...And I think DirecWay/HughesNet knows it! I'm tempted to open my own private cable company in this area, but I don't have the capital. Bet I could make a good profit in this rural area....but alas.
Clay Harley -April 6, 2007
Having read all the previous comments there is little I can add that would be of benefit to the reader except to say that the ONLY reason you should consider Hughes is if your only other choice is dial-up. If you already have dial-up don't consider changing to Satellite service unless you are willing to pay considerably more for a service that often times resembles dial-up. This is particularly true if you have to stream anything such as music videos or live TV auctions. It will work great for a couple of hours and then BAM, you are down to speeds that even dialup can surpass. As for customer service, you had better learn to speak Hindi if you want to take to someone you can understand.

I agree Hughes is terrible, I have been loosing service since 9/06. All my lights on my modem go out except the power and it does this several times per day. Sometimes every 3 minutes. I upgraded from the 6000 to the 7000 hoping it would stop, no it has not, I finally had a service tech come out last week, and guess what it still does it. He changed everything except the LNB and actual dish. This is my 4th modem. I was told I would have to pay 125. for the tech that came out or 300 to cancel my service. more like lack of service. I to got angry with tech support in India because I could not understand them and they kept having me do the same things over and over with no results. They act as if you are faking your connection problems. I told them as soon as my term is up I am going to wildblue, and would never recommend hughes to anyone. At least when Direcway had it they would send someone out if the phone tech couldn't fix it. Oh, and when I upgraded to the 7000 it took me 6 months to get the new modem. What service.
Angie -April 29, 2007
well i´ve had dw7000 for little over a year. IT was great at the beginning (around march of of 2006) but then on november something happen to the satellite i was on and every one suffere from it. Since then my connection was miserable. One month (march of 2007) with only 8 to 20.01 kbps connection. What can i do with that and i was still charge for that month. and by mid april it almost went back to normal. Just every now and then maybe one or 2 days a week my connection drops under 20 kbps. I thought i was watching too many vids or downloading to many things. but i took a look at my bandwidth usage and i stayed below my limit. i would under stand if i went over. you get a penalty of 8 to 24 hours of low connection. looking into skyscraper and other available service. don´t care if i get 500 kbps. but as long as i get one gig or more of download limit. but service is amazing while it works and i do go beyond my limit. can´t wait for Wild blue to reach my area. if they give what they say. they are perfect . even this town phonelines are thru satellite and antenas. we are complete cut of physically from the world for the exception of the electric lines. if you get hughesnet service.. make sure u learn how the systems works. u can even fix the signals and poles yourself. that´s what helped me.. i get on my latter tweak my satelite every now and then for the best signal and poles reception. weather has little to do with it... its the electromagnetic fields that cuase the problems... i get very heavy rain and thunder storms and my signal strengths drops under 60 and i still have a great connection.. but only when i get lighting storms when my connections starts to fail. or changes in the hemispheres.

I have had hughes net for about 6 months now and I am not too upset with it. I have only have had to call tech support once for connection problems and they were suprisingly pretty good. I was done in about 15 miniuts and my connection was back to normal. The frequent acess policy absolutly sucks!!!!! I always go over the limit. The only reason I would suggest getting this service is if you have no other options and know your area will not be getting cable/dsl in a while.

i hate hughsnet mine goes to 3 light every 3 minetes i can barely type this complait i have speeds of 10 upload and 50 download and latencies reach sometimes 2000 and my worst is 26000 never get hughs net trust me it will save you well over a few thousands of dollars

After using direcway satellite for nearly three years, I can echo many of the complaints listed hear. One of the main issues I have is that the system does not seem to be able to handle secure sites. As soon as I go to any HTTPS site the system seems to go to a crawl. This makes the system unreliable for online banking, stock trading and the like. As well, every few months I seem to find myself up on my roof trying to tweak the dish because the cross pol goes out of adjustment. In all, the system is better than the dialup it replaced, but it is far from perfect. Ian

Just Say No to Hughes NET Worse thing I ever done and most expensive. I have only had this system since April which I don't like but have been living with. I called in on 9-28-2007 because I wanted to pay off the equipment financing. I took a forever for the agent to understand what I wanted to do. The agent was like you have to take care of the balance due first. Well heck I had just paid it a couple weeks ago and next payment was not due till 10-18-2007. So I just paid it the $106.00 which is my normal bill with there $5 paper statement fee. Then she was like ok you owe $400.00 on your system. I was like ok thats fine. She took my $400.00 payment. Two-three days later I get a bill for $800.00. I with two $400.00 equipment payment line items. So I go online and look and see, shows my credit card payment posted and a remainder blance of $400.00. So I didn't thank much of it and emailed billing@HugesNet.com and requested somone e-mail me back with a resolution. Only reply I got was the auto-generated one. After a week I went back to my account online. same deal. So I decided to call. The young philipino was like no sir those charges are valid. We dont reverse vaild charges. Could not make her understand what i was saying. Last time I checked there was only wane pimp size dish on my house. She is like no sir you have two systems. I just hung up and thought I would trie it again the next day. Lord same deal, it would be nice if they would stop reading scripts and listen. After the "No Sir I can't help you" I asked for a manager. Well got a manager and all of a sudden the system went down for mantainace. I explained the entire thing to her and she was like sir I cant help you. Then I ased is the scheduled maintance you have an estimated time frame it will be done. No sir we dont know. So I just hung up went online I could look at my account, not sure why she couldn't. So I tried another e-mail. I am being to wonder if I am ever going to get this fixed. I get a letter that DSL is going to be in my area soon from AT&T. You better bet I'll be paying that $300.00 early contract fee. Same speed not bandwidth limit and $19.95 no contract. I am going to post this on as many boards as I can find, and I hope I hit my bandwidth limit. My tech support has just been long and drawn out. I just dont call anymore. I hate it when you hit the wrong button or 0 there IVR says EXCUSE ME?. Now thats rude.

Well all this bad news about Hughes. Well how about Wildblue. Is their service/equiptment more reliable? They are "Couple-marketed" with Direct-TV. If any one has a review please e-mail at oakhills6@netzero.com
Chip -November 11, 2007
Chip, I am getting Wildblue through Dish Network soon. I'll let everyone know how they are in about a month. By the way, Dish Network offers a lower price for Wildblue because they purchased the equipment themselves and charge you a lease fee. Wildblue's price is higher through them directly, because they sell you the equipment.

I have Wildblue now (I'm "Name" from above.), and so far everything is going pretty well. Installation had to be rescheduled a couple times, and the Wildblue receiver seems to be having some problems working with my wireless router, but I'm getting 250MB of bandwidth a day instead of 175MB for $10 less a month. It's averaging 62KBs download instead of 90KBs with DirecWay, but frankly I don't care what speed it is, I'm just happy to not be a DirecWay customer anymore.

Hughesnet is completely incapable of hosting an xbox live connection because their MTU is offset/specific and ICMP does not reply the packets, causing a failed network test. Now, i am forced to cancel my service and try to find something else that will work out in the countryside. F*** Hughesnet, you guys need to implement support for online gaming on your satellite servers.

Looks like Hughes has screwed us again. It seems as of yesterday now you can't even play WoW at all with their service. Before we dealt with the lag because it was still faster than dial-up. Now we can't even connect to WoW anymore. Hughes has done something to their service that won't establish a connection. We called WoW tech support and they said they have received a lot of phone calls from WoW and Hughes users and they are having the same problem. So it is on Hughes side. Hughes is a rip off. We even pay $10 more a month for a "bigger bucket." Please don't waste your money or time dealing with this company. If you haven't had it installed don't get it!

I have had the DW6000 for a few yrs now. Conneted to a Linksys Wireles-G router. I was about to add an Exterial Access Point along with a Range Expander, until I got FAPPED! I was updating my Win XP which took forever. I had never experience FAP before and believe me it SUX! While, the download was sloooooooowly doing it's thing, I could not stay conneted to any of my other comps. After downloading was finished I unplugged the DW last night and still I am FAPPED this morning. I have a feeling that this comment will get an error and all will be lost. I will disconnet and try again later. If anyone has any info as to how I can get UNFAPPED, I would appreciate it!

I WISH THERE WAS ANOTHER WAY..... SINCE HUGHES LAST UPGRADE IN APRIL THIS YEAR,I CAM HOME TOO A PHONE MESSAGE , TELLING ME MY IP ADDRESS HAD BEEN CHANGED. I CALLED TOO FIND OUT WHAT WAS UP, I WAS INFORMED THEY SENT ANOTHER SAT, UP IN SPACE. NOTHING HAS WORKED RIGHT SINCE, I'M LUCKY TOO STAY CONNECTED FOR THAN A COUPLE HOURS. ALL OF THE EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN REPLACED.FORGET CALLING TECH SUPPORT.AND THE FAIR ACT. HA ! WHATS FAIR ABOUT IT? NOTHING , THE LAST TIME I CALLED TOO SPEAK TO MANIGMENT , I WAS PLACED ON HOLD . THEY NEVER CAME BACK. I PAY FOR THE USE OF A STATIC I.P ADDRESS TO USE P2P PROGRAMS AS WELL AS CHAT/ V.O.P HA !~! mIRC WHICH I HAVE USED FOR YEARS. I NOW CANNOT EVEN GET A VOICE , BECAUSE THEY CANNOT ACCESS MY FILES HUGHES SAYS THEY ARE NOT BLOCKING THE PORTS. LIES... LIES.. LIES....HUGHES IS A BIGGGGGGGGGGGGG JOKE !~! AS SOON AS I CAN I WILL NOT EVER USE THEM OR RECOMEND THEM AGAIN...

Getting rid of my service ASAP!!!! Web acceleration errors, weather problems, and browsing hang-ups. Techsupport runs you through same trouble shooting each time, had enough. Went to Verizon broadband aircard, much faster, no stupid FAP. 5 gig monthly, and cheaper. If any one knows how to network an air card I'd appreciate the tip.

XBOX LIVE IS NOT SUPPORTED ON HUGHES! THE LAST DISAPPOINTMENT FROM HUGHES! Hughes/DirectPC (the same monopoly as with ATT) does not support XBOX. Not because of any technical hurdles but because they want to save money and they expect you to only be reading one-way, cachable web pages. With gaming the traffic load is not demanding, but it is not "fixed" or compressable. Also more importantly it is not "viewable". Check your traffic routes as it goes through GSA sites and 10 internal hops before getting out to the INET for simple family web surfing, sad state that is the NSA's focus. This must be why XBOX, or semi-free information exchanges are NOT supported. XBOX LIVE reports inconsistent MTU errors from Hughes. When logging traffic XBOX is blocked by Hughes' "NOXBOXLIVE" proxy address. XBOX MTU error indicates too small of an MTU size but from a PC a larger size, non-fragged size CAN be used. Cancelling Hughes' monopoly service, or lack of service. ATT is the same socialist model as Hughes.
NoXBox Live -November 22, 2008
To all of you wondering why Hughes Net won't work with xbox live...SPACE. You are communicating with a satellite dish in orbit. Every pack of info leaves your dish, travels to their sats, and then is sent back to your dish. This creates major latency, and I mean major, making it impossible to effectively play pretty much all games. I have hughes, and it works with xbox live for the simple things. Downloading updates, demos, chatting with friends, etc. Hell, I can even play gears of war 2 with friends, but I am skipping all over the map and I average about 1/4 of my usual kills due to the lag. And don't even think about Halo 3 or COD 4, the matchmaking won't even let you find games to join. You can however play guitar hero and rock band flawlessly. Anyways, I have had it for 2 years now and I hate my internet life, I ended up getting Sprint's EVDO broadband just for my xbox live fix. Works perfect.
Matt -December 12, 2008
Hughes STINKS. Evertime the wind blows I'm on limited access because of their so called "Fair Access" policy. I don't see ANYTHING fair about it! If it ever happens to you once, they seem to cut you off at will - probably whenever they require more bandwidth. When I signed up for the service it was still Directway. Back then there were no limits. Then they switch it and raise the price on us all (hidden by telling you that you MUST upgrade and pay additional fees). I think they should be sued for false advertising. The girl on TV proudly lies that you will have "Faster surfing, faster downloads, faster everything!". She fails to mention "Just don't use it, or we will force you down to speeds slower than dial up - get yours today!". Has anyone contacted a class action law firm yet? We might all get 50 cents each but at least these crooks will have to come off some money.
Doug West -December 26, 2008
I've been reviewing these comments about Hughes and agree with them all: The good, the bad, and the ugly! Got my kids the Xbox and found out that I can use Xbox live :( I had to tell them they couldn't play Halo3 on-line with their friend (problem 1). The FAP sucks too (problem 2). With the way the U.S. ecoonomy is shedding jobs, Hughes would do the citizens of America right by bringing the jobs back from India and the Philippines (problem 3). I bet Howard Hughes is rolling in his grave! I'm thinking of going DSL; any suggestions with ISP comparible to Hughes (i.e., when its working and when FAP hasn't been activated)? Please e-mail me - thanks.
