Why do you keep harping on the supposedly great features of the PSP? By the time you get it to do anything, you've spent as much money as you would on a desktop PC. If I want to watch movies on the go, I'll use a portable DVD player. If I want to plat games, I'll use the superior (and cheaper) Nintendo Advance or DS.
Jim -May 4, 2005
I agree with Jim - why spend all that money on non-standard type Sony memory sticks and the hassle of converting a DVD to a format their system can play when you can buy a 7" portable DVD player that plays regular DVD's for $170? And as for gamnes, Nintendo has better (and cheaper) games hands down in comparison to what Sony has. Sorry, like a lot of what Sony has produced, it's proprietary, orphan technology (remember betaMax?) that Sony seems so insistent on producing. If only the PSP had a regular memopry interface and a simpler way of accessing and playing videos, but it won't happen, Sony will discontinue the PSP before admitting defeat and coming out with an improved model hosting standard features.
Michael -May 5, 2005
This device, while nice (I know someone that owns one) is nothing more than just another proprietary device which will be obsolete in a few years. It really is a waste of money. I agree with the others that you are spending far too much time reporting on this device.
Frank P -May 5, 2005
Hmmmmm, I don't really think the proprietary arguments really stack up. This unit connects to a PC via (starndard) USB 1 or 2 (without additional software*) and plays standard MPEG 4 videos. You can also copy over standard JPEG files and MP3 files via USB in the same way. Just how standard do you expect this unit to be? * Win2k and XP
Ian Walker -May 6, 2005
You know you can tell when a device has accomplished something when you see people poke fun at it. It seems to me that the PSP and the DS are pretty much apples and oranges. Sure, they're both portable gaming systems, but so is a laptop computer, but you don't see people making direct comparisons there, now do you? The fact of the matter is the PSP does a lot more than the DS, and also costs a lot more. Those two factors make efforts at comparing the two units futile.

I've been playing video games since spending hours beating the original space invaders on the 2600. I dropped out when the original nintendo came out but i've owned or my kids have owned every nintendo system since and i'll admit i've never played a better game than the mario bro. games on their consoles but their had held games have always been a toy for little kids to me. My kids have owned all the nintendo hand helds because they love pokemon but the graphics have been subpar since the beginning. I owned a lynx back in the 80's and the graphics were better on it than anything put out by nintendo for 15 years. I can't compare with the ds since i havent seen the graphics but 3000+ colors can't be that much of an improvement. Now if your into nintendo games there's nothing better for gameplay but why should i have to look at graphics that are barely better than colecovision to play these good games. I think the introduction of the psp and its far superior graphics is a good thing because it will force nintendo to get off its lazy butt and build a better hand held game. And the more articles written about the psp and all the things you can do with it will just add to the pressure on nintendo to supply a better machine. If your jealous of the psp quit reading the articles and start complaining to nintendo to build you a better hand held to play their superior games on.

There seem to be alot of folks nowadays out to trash the PSP. Look there are many older gamers around who'll never spend a dime on anything nintendo , they just dont like cheap kiddie games!! The PSP will dominate this market, its like a PDA so nothing the DS can do will compare for a older more deserning buyer. I show mine off and everyone adult I known seem to want one of these for themselves and the DS for the kids (thats who nintendo markets for right?) for my son I'd buy him a DS because it's cheaper, nintendo has a lock on kiddie games, plus because it's mainly cheap plastic I would'nt loose much once he breaks it. Tell me, How much is Apple and nintendo paying to smeer this product, because clearly the IPOD and the DS futures are in jeopardy and your comments saying otherwise seem very suspect. once again "If your jealous of the psp quit reading the articles and start complaining to nintendo to build you a better hand held to play their so called <---- added, superior games on" or "grow up"
Rob Grande' -May 9, 2005
It was difficult to shell out $300 for a portable gaming system, but once I played around with it, I can't let go. I even went out to buy a Logitech Playgear Pocket case, Power Brick, and am now shopping for 512MB MS Duo. The Memory Stick issue is one Sony dropped the ball on: had they included a 1GB or 5GB harddrive, it would've put Apple's I-Pod out of business! Instead, Sony wanted us to all rush out and pay twice the money on Memory Stick Duo's. It seemed to have worked, if you've recently shopped for Memory Stick Duo's. They are over-priced everywhere!! (Price-fixing??!!) Oh well, competition is always good for consumers!! Now, this'll force Nintendo not to overlook us middle-aged electronics freaks. Remember, we have deeper pockets than those 5th-graders!
Brian Y. -May 9, 2005
Also: DON'T pay for any of the programs to put DVD videos on your PSP! Just download PSP Video 9 (www.pspvideo9.com) for FREE!! It does all the formatting and folder/file names automatically for you! You just need to play around with the quality settings, and pray for the Memory Stick Duo prices to come down!
Brian Y. -May 9, 2005
I bough this for one reason. I do a lot of traveling and have to share a laptop with my coworkers. That means that I do not get to play the games I want, or watch the movies I want, all of the time. With the PSP, I am able to make DVDs full of movies that I can then copy to the PSP in very little time. I can also play games when I want, or listen to music when I want. All of this on one piece of equipment that cost less than $400 after I bought a 512mb stick, case and game. Now, add up the price of a portable DVD player, Nintendo DS, and MP3 player, and tell me that this is not a good deal!

I have Both the DS and the PSP. I was a gaming fan since the 2600 and have had numerous console systems. (2600, gemini, Intellivision, colecovision, Genesis, NES, PS1, PS2 and a few other not so common ones) I agree, the Nintendo games are more fun, but PSP does have them beat in many ways. As for the abilities, each is different. I think the DS will probably become the next Palm Pilot if the DS people play their cards right. The PSP lacks the touchscreen or a keyboard input device but the wireless abilities allow for a wireless keyboard. I think both would make AMAZING products if they could support the daily business needs and organizing needs. Seriously, now that the PSP has the graphics needed I can see it being a great palmtop computer. You can use the MS to transfer files and in reality all you need now is the ability to run some software or have something that can interface with most business tools and you have yourself a winner. Maybe they're gonna do a Linux type of Palm Computer, wouldn't that be a fun idea?
Davy -May 17, 2005
Why does every web site on the net have nintendo fans slagging off the psp, if you dont like the psp why are you looking for and reading psp sites in the first place? Shouldnt you be looking for nintendo sites? Unless of course you want to gripe about your inferior kiddie machine. Side by side there is no comparison unless of course you are a complete moron, are you? Now go to google and type in "nintendo" and leave us proud psp owners in peace and stop boring us to death with you stupid rants.

For those who keep trashing the PSP and call it a proprietary device, you might be right but making remarks about it like "I could use a $175 dollars portable DVD player to watch standard DVDs" is tiring and unfair. Have you seen how awesome the PSP pictures when viewing UMD movies? Have you compared the screens between your cheap portable DVD player with the almighty PSP? Have you actually seen the PSP? I could use a typewriter to write the same letter another person uses Microsoft Word with a laser printer but that is hardly the same thing. Sure you can play games with the DS and watch movies on your cheap $175 dollar DVD player, but I can do more than that with just one device and it is called PSP. Imagine sitting on the plane and carrying the DS, your cheap DVD player, and an ipod. Opps! I forgot, you could listen to MP3 with your cheap DVD player, I guess. And as, for me sitting on the next seat to you on the plane, all I need is a sexy thing called Sony PSP and I could do all of what you're trying to do. Make sense?

All you guys who are questioning the purpose of going to all this time and expense to get video to play on the PSP just dont get it. I think the best analogy I can think of is when they asked George Mallory why make the attempt to climb Mount Everest. "Because it was there." Sure, there are cheaper, easier, better ways to watch movies on the go. I guess only an accomplished geek truly gets that rush of exhiliration when he figures out how to make something do something when it was not really designed to do that particular something in that particular way. And then of course the excitement of showing it off to all your other geeky friends. Since I am spouting off as if anyone really cared about my opinion, I want to comment on the whole Nintendo, Sony thing. Nintendo was for many years truly the 800 pound gorilla of home gaming and justly so considering the quality of their products. And while I will always remeber Nintendo fondly I have watched them in recent years make one incredible marketing blunder after another. There is another analogy, "Build A Better Mousetrap, bla bla bla", that is in my humble opinion dead wrong. You can have the best product in the world, but if you don't have someone with the skills to market it effectively to Joe Bland American you are going to end up in last place. Anyone remember the Commodore Amiga? I have a feeling that we will eventually be playing Mario and Link on Playstations and Xboxes. Just antoher two cents from a major closet geek. If I have offended anyone, please contact me immediately so that I can punish myself severly for having done so.

I have a PSP, and following the step by step instructions i have managed to put video on easily. My only problem is one of the d-pad buttons seems to be jammed, and as i imported it from japan, i don't know what to do! Can neone help me?!
Bob -May 31, 2005
Ok, I bought the PSP because it was such a versital machine. It also had some to do with the fact the salesman at EB games told me it had a browser on it. Ok so it does but Im no hack & dont plan to be. I would much rather buy a browser (HINT HINT) to surf at the coffee shop than on my large laptop. I believe if Sony saw it in thier infinite wisdome to provied such a thing thier product would market to adults much more than it does now... As for the video issue it really is no issue. I first tried a program called 3gp converter, it worked but it was severely lacking. Video 9 is the way to go. Anyone who tells you this is a difficult process is playing with thier brain on the playground at recess. If you can rip a dvd you can back it up on your PSP. I bought the DS for my kids. It truely is for my kids. PSP rocks. If you cant use the internet to learn to use it maybe you needed to buy the DS. Come on I don't use AOL but there are people who are glad to use it... so let them.

I just bought a psp and it is amazing. And for all you Nintendo lovers saying 'Why go through all the hassles for getting videos blah blah blah' you obviously don't know how easy it really is. It just looks complicated when you don't understand. So you can download movies for free, or buy dvd quality umd discs, play games, download mp3s and view photos... [sarcasm]hmm yeah the nintendo ds sure beats that.[/sarcasm]

I want to know, if I purchase a PSP in the USA can I burn a DVD onto my system and then put it onto the memory stick and get full playback on my PSP. I know that UMD's in the UK will not work due to the set up for the states? I know this ilegal, and not something one would do, but would like to know.
Brian -November 7, 2005
Brian, for the record, it's perfectly legal to copy a DVD that you own. At least, in the US it is. As for the UMDs, yeah, apparently Sony has Region-locked them, sadly. I gotta ask, tho: Do you live in the UK and are looking to purchase a US PSP or are you living in the US and looking to watch UK movies on your PSP? Just curious.
Kravius -November 24, 2005
Well, everything is more or less clear, but PSP Video9 is using .NET framwork. Just want to mention here another apps. completely FREE: 3GP_Converter032 Regarding to Mpeg4: it is h.264 codec with AAC audio compression. Not really Mpeg4. Also known as mpeg4 step 10.
Gemmoroy -November 24, 2005
When I was a kid, all we had was a paper bag, and we counted ourselves lucky! None of this fancy PSP business for us, I'll tell you! The reason I want to try video on my PSP is because I've already got one to play games, and I want to see if I can get it to do some new and interesting things. I'm frequently out places where I don't have a computer/net access or even access to an electrical outlet. The PSP works in these conditions and fits in my pocket. And plays games. Nifty!
Lisa Williams -November 26, 2005
Same old, same old... Knock Sony, Microsoft, Man U etc - Bottom line they are market leaders. Proof of the pudding is no. of units sold - case in point - could not get a PSP in UK in Nov for love nor money - none in shops, internet or otherwise (apart from dodgy Jap imports on e-bay). At the same time Nintendo DS's everywhere. Ask average 8 year old what he wants for Xmas - I guarantee you it will not be Nintendo, Borland, or Leeds UTD !!!
Ian H -November 29, 2005
theres only one good thing about the DS and thats the fact that only one person requires a copy of a game to play in multiplayer, i think that is soooo sweet. however the psp beats it in everything else. i luckily grabbed a 2gb mem stick for 80 pounds :) and with a psp, things are way sweeter than a ds could ever provide.
Zub -December 1, 2005
umm i use psp video 9 and i cant convert music into mp4 can sum1 help me?
John -December 26, 2005
Or can sum1 tell me a program to download that works to convert mp3's and how to use it?please?
John -December 26, 2005
I bought a PSP for my son. Great machine. Paid less then $300 retail and for another 85 bucks, got a 1 Gig mem card. Only needed the manual for one thing. The PSP plays MP3s directly. I d/l'd video files and they play great. I like the fact that my digital camera usb cable connects to the PSP so I can load photos to show friends. I especially like the fact that the wireless works with the latest security aettings and is 802.11G compatable.

I question thee, what is this article about? This is one war branching off into many more battles. Please, let this comment stand as arbitration in this infinitesimally continuing dispute. I personally own a PSP myself, but I'll try to make my input as unbiased as possible (I would own a DS also if my pockets were a bit deeper...). Man always strives to have more. That is what has made the human race so adept at advancing. The PSP has many useful (and Oh-so-cool) features, but nevertheless, it could always have more. I would personally enjoy a Flashplayer 7+ and am eagerly awaiting the outcome of PSPHacks.net's programming contest($500 to the person(s) who creates the best homebrew Flashplayer). The PSP is very versitile and has great potential to be the next true "MUST-HAVE" device since the cell-phone, that is, if Sony chooses to continue adding capabitities to it. But don't forget that when the next Sony handheld comes out (which one almost surely will), the design team will need some "blow-your-mind-out-of-your-freakin'-skull" ideas to make it a success.Whatever you suggest now, they might pursue in a next-gen handheld, rather than immediately. Don't forget, there is a market now that Nintendo no longer has a monoploy over the portable gaming business. They are contenders and both will have to plant new thoughts into their consoles to outmeasure the other. After all, I bought a PSP over a DS + 4-5 games because of it's ability to play MP3s, MP4s, view pictures, wirelessly send and recieve such pictures, wirelesly share games locally and globally, surf the Internet wirelessly, listen to online newscasts/radio, watch wireless TV, watch UMDs of DVDs, play great games, not have to change AA batteries every week, connect to your PC, and meanwhile, put out simply ASTOUNDING quality graphics and sound. The DS on the other hand has two screens and selection of many, rather child-based games. Personally, I've never been a Nintendo person myself, but I do believe that the PSP severly outmatches the DS by a longshot for my tastes and standards. I think that the PSP was the technological offspring between the Sony Corperation and God. I say go out and buy one, but weigh your options first. What are you looking for in a handheld console, along with your monetary and adaptive limits? I don't mean to insult anyone by "adaptive limits", I'm just saying that the PSP isn't too hard to grasp the concept of, but it does involve a bit more than pressing A to make Mario bonk his head off of a levitating cinderblock and be shot out of a cannon by a little black bomb,... or a giant spikey turtle,... or a talking mushroom/ toad... thing... Have fun with whatever suits you best. P.S.-I apoligize in advance to those who burst a cranial blood vessel while reading my big words and correct grammar. P.P.S.-I've always been with Sony and I probably always will be. P.P.P.S.-I also think that if you're a red hatted, blue suspendered plumber named Mario that talks to mushrooms (whom apparantly in his world, talk back), then you've either been dealing with the wrong kinda' pipes or just had to many 'shrooms yourself. Peace and Happy Hew Years!

for zub of December 1,2005: The PSP only has to have one copy of the game to play multiplayer also. I play my friend who has a larger selection of games than me all the time . P.S. I can't wait till XBOX portabel. Does any one know if XBOX will make a portabel game soon. If they do i bet it would be way better than my PSP. And since it wolud be made by microsoft of windows or what ever there called it would probaly have a bunch of cool things that you could use with your computer and your XBOX360. And it most likely would have a ditacheabel hard drive like the XBOX360 an might even be abel to use the one for XBOX360. I hope microsoft or windows or what ever there called makes XBOx portabel.

ok, this whole deal is actually starting to make me lose faith in the human race! Can you actually believe someone put in that, "the DS wont because of its touch - screen abilities"!?!?! Are you retarded? Look, you can give Nintendo props and Kudos for being one of the first and best video game system developers, but what it boils right down to is, Nintendo has always sucked! the only reason they are so popular is because they, for a long time (back in the 80's and early 90's) have been a monopoly! Now, if you want to hold on to your beloved mario kart and crap, be my guest, but don't go thrashing on the PSP because SONY makes it. Your comparing a little childrens toy to a portable computer! sure, it might be fairly difficult to get videos on the PSP, but the DS cant do anything the PSP can do, and the graphics are trash! I agree with a lot of you, nintendo targets kids, while the PSP is something everyone can enjoy, so if you dont like it, stop whining and go play donkey kong.

I Have My Psp in my pocket right now, i've played DS's with my friends.. both systems are good.. but when it comes to comparing.. it's basically Raw vs Smackdown psp, against... kirby touch. and the ds has good games.. they have the same games too, such a ridge racer.. but ridge racer on the psp, compared to the ds.. hands down, psp ten-fold. the psp has alot more accesories.. the ds is just.. wireless.. which the psp is also.. people say the psp has too many ports.. i disagree.. u can charge your psp while having it connected to you pc and putting music on it.. sure it looks like neo from the matrix but that's besides the point. im going to download the converter. thanks paul for posting it up here and please, people.. can't we just get along? what'd teh point between this nintendo and playstation fued of fans? sit down, relax, smoke a cig if u have to.. but nintendo fans. PLEASE stop raggin on the psp.. we left you alone.. and u just came with signs of hatred. im a huge nintendo fan, i love the Super nintendo. i don't like the gamecube much though and there milking mario to death just let him eat his pizza.. but anyways.. both systems are good... psp is just better..

just here to make a few points, first of all, i have first hand played both the DS and PSP, trust me, the PSP is a way better buy. the psp is great for music, games, and picture storage. the graphics and resolution on the psp vastly out do the DS's capabilities. the video quality is really good for something like the psp could be better with a bigger screen. the DS has only 2 good games. THATS IT! mario kart and mario DS. the psp has much better game selection and quality and makes the ds cower in comparison. nintendo had a good idea with the dual screens and touch screen, but they didnt take the time to make a decent product cause they know it is only going to appeal to little kids. in the end, the PSP is the better buy
ryan -July 15, 2006
i dont see what your all moaning about with the memory sticks when you can buy a 2gb one on ebay for around £25 , which is like $40 right. this gives plenty of space for all the files you need. The psp dominates the hand held market and most likely will do for some time. I think it rules , i travel a lot so it is the perfect thing for me.

I have a friend at work that had both. He has put away his DS & only uses his PSP. I am saving up to get one now. I plan on using it mainly to watch video's on it. I have a SONY DCR-HC-90 Camcorder. It to uses MS Duo. I already have 2 512MB cards. I went over to his house & converted alot of video & played it on his PSP. It's Awsome. I also put alot of my MP3's & Digital stills I took with my handycam on it. SONY Makes (Almost) Awsome Products. They do always seem to miss something. On the PSP they missed putting a Video out on it. It would be nice to hook it to a regular TV and play the games on it when your at home. Just as they missed putting a headphone jack on my Handycam. While Sony Products are not perfect. They are very Good.

Hehe, I just love the fanboy arguments that always get trundled out. Neither the DS nor the PSP "sucks" - they're both good at what they do, and they do different things for different people. PSP appeals more to me because I'm not really into "cutesy" games, but I did consider the DS as well. I set myself the budget of a DS, but when I really did my homework on them I pushed the budget and went for the one I'd continue to enjoy owning - and that's the PSP. It's still a great tool, especially on holiday.

this didn't work i followed every step with making the folders and i downloaded the software(PSP Video 9)and converted my videos and it kept coming up on my PSP there are no videos and there isn't a fault on my memory card or PSP becasue it shows all my pictures and plays all my music so unless you have missed something out this DOES NOT WORK!

I have problems with PSP Video 9 also. Only one of the 4 videos I have converted actually ran on my PSP. Oh, and by the way, 'Matt' of 'MSF Productions' above states in a comment that the PSP does not have video-out support. This is false. You just have to buy a cable for it. The video-out is that little slit next to the headphone jack. It can output standard rca, component video, or s-video depending on what cable you buy. So... maybe the PSP is perfect... ...Or something....

I have had my PSP for about 6 months now and am still looking for that perfect tool to convert DVD to its weird movie format (MPEG4 is NOT any kind of standard). I have never managed to get PSP Video 9 to convert anything that will play on my PSP, and has a terrible interface. However I currently use four tools in a chain that produce superb output, though it takes many hours per vid. So if anyone who cannot get PSP Vid9 to work finds a tool that does at any price I would be very interested.

Well I've gone around the block a few times trying to find a program to put videos on my PSP. I even paid for the Lenogo Video to PSP Converter. DO NOT under any circumstance give them money. I couldn't get the watermark from my converted files and after answering one email with a non helpful answer they ignored all emails and open tickets from that point. Also refused to give me my money back by never answering. Wan*ers! This product is great though. I've had no trouble with it and it's worked first time. Plus my bank balance hasn't been ripped off by thieving bastards like Lenogo!!

For me, DVDFab is the best way. Just place the converted result in the VIDEO folder in the root of your Sony Memory Stick. It also converts your DVD to other systems like Nokia or iPod video. Recommended! With the latest version you can even choose to implement subtitles and select the spoken language. PS You'll need firmware 3.4 or higher to enjoy the results of DVDFab on a PSP.

Mitch your encoder should make a jpeg to go along with the newly converted file. just name it as mentioned above and there you have it. And as for everyone who does not get what make a PSP so bad*ss one word. HOMEBREW. i have saved hundreds of paychecks on what my PSP can do. Yeah videos are a hassel but so is an ipod. Only negitive thing i can say about my PSP is that it is ruining my life. every free min anywhere, i cant put it down.
