DVD Format Description Recordable Rewriteable DVD-Player Compatible
DVD-Video DVD-Video is the DVD format that consumer DVD players use. Unlike the DVD-ROM format, the DVD-Video format includes Content Scrambling System (CSS) encryption to prevent users from copying discs. N N Y
DVD-ROM The read-only format supports discs with 4.7GB capacities. N N Y
DVD-R The recordable DVD discs can be written to once. DVD-Rs are the DVD counterpart of CD-Rs. Y N Y
DVD-RAM These random-access discs are primarily intended for computer-data storage. DVD-RAMs are caddy-mounted and aren't compatible with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players. Y Y N
