Steve Jobs Zings Michael Dell

Apple CEO Steve Jobs had some choice words for Dell CEO Michael Dell last week when Apple's stock price surged and, at least temporarily, made Apple a bigger company that PC leader Dell. At issue were statements Mr. Dell made a few years ago, when then-struggling Apple suggested that Jobs should simply sell off the company's technology so that its shareholders could retain at least some value. In an email message to employees, Jobs took Mr. Dell to task. "It turned out that Michael Dell wasn't perfect at predicting the future," Jobs told them. "Based on today's stock market close, Apple is worth more than Dell. Stocks go up and down, and things may be different tomorrow, but I thought it was worth a moment of reflection today." By "reflection," of course, Jobs means "egotistical trash-talking." Ah well.

Egotistical Trash-Talking? Did Apple out price Dell or not? Steve Jobs was absolutely right to say that MD's prediction was off. What was MD doing with the original quote? In business terms trying to put the boot in while the competition appeared weak. It is Dells avowed intent to be the number one computer manufacturer. That means killing the competition, by all means necessary. It didn't work and hopefully it never will!

If you ask me, a long time Windows user, slowly moving to linux and contemplating a Mac, Apple is the only real innovator in PCs out there. For gosh darn (I know this site filters certain key words) Macs are used by artists of all mediums. That should say something concidering that software for most artists needs are also available for Windows PCs. They look good and work well. Windows PC may work well but they all look the same. My two cents. Not worth a whole lot.

I suspect that Paul is, as usual, essentially correct in his analysis. Given that this is anti-Apple (altho he is generally agnostic of MS), I'm surprised at the lack of 'flaming' here from the Apple cognoscenti. Thanks Paul for your (as I see it) informative, interesting and objective views. I wouldn’t be here otherwise. Do please keep it comming!!!

Roger: I don't think that anyone really needs to expand on this - Apple are consistantly put down by the ignorant as being small fry in the computer world. While everyone knows that Apple is the most innivative PC company, Steve was right to point out that they are also _still_ one of the largest corporations on the planet.
