Dell Digital Jukebox

Two keys to creating a successful consumer-electronics product are simplicity and intuitiveness. Dell has accomplished both in its Dell Digital Jukebox (DJ). Released in October 2003, the DJ mirrors all the aspects that have made the Apple iPod successful. It has a sleek design, an easy-to-read 2" backlit display, long battery life, and simple scrolling navigation by way of a barrel roller. However, the most important feature of the Dell DJ is probably its affordable price: The 15GB version is available for $249, and the 20GB version for $50 more.

Upon opening the box, the first thing I noticed was the number of accessories that come standard with the player. Included are a remote control, a slipcase, headphones, a USB cable, a two-piece AC adapter, and the installation software and manuals. The second thing I noticed was the density of the device. The Dell DJ is small and compact, but it definitely feels solid and sturdy, weighing in at 7.6 ounces. The brushed-metal look of the casing is very attractive and adds to the unit's solid feel. The barrel roller, which instantly became my primary means of navigation, is located in the center of the unit, below the display, and is easily accessible whether you're a left- or right-thumbed driver. The face of the unit also features a home button, a back button, and a play/pause button, as well as skip-forward and skip-backward controls. The volume controls are located on the side of the unit, along with the power button. All of the controls are backlit, solid, and easy to use. I had no trouble blindly stopping and starting the player, adjusting the volume, and powering it down.

Dell Digital Jukebox with Accessories
The DJ supports MP3, WMA, and WAV audio formats. You get the standard browsing methods, which include album, artist, track, genre, and playlist. You can create DJ playlists on the fly, without needing a PC connection. For someone like me, this feature is quite convenient. I tend to transfer all the music I can to my player, then sort it out later. As I purchase new music, I simply add it to the player, then create playlists when I listen to it for the first time. Several Shuffle and Repeat modes are available, but a major flaw is the inability to select continuous play without a playlist. To listen to all the music in your library, you must create a playlist that includes every album on your DJ. Hopefully, Dell can correct this problem with a firmware upgrade at some point.

For managing your music through your PC, the DJ is packaged with MusicMatch software. Having MusicMatch bundled with the player introduces several advantages, the most apparent of which is access to the MusicMatch library. You can purchase songs for $.99 each, with most full albums costing about $9.99. MusicMatch is the only way you can transfer audio files to the DJ, which is frustrating for users who like to use Windows Explorer to manage all their devices. The DJ shows up as a removable drive in Explorer, but you can transfer only data files to the device. In an effort to prevent piracy, the DJ doesn't let you upload audio files from the DJ to PC.

Dell Digital Jukebox - Front ViewOne of the DJ's most impressive features is its outstanding battery life. A fully charged battery will last as long as 16 hours—twice the life of the iPod battery. The device includes an internal microphone, and I'm still trying to figure out why. You can record voice input through the mic, but you can't transfer your recorded files off the device to your PC, making it just about as useless as a mic can be. Another interesting but useless aspect of the mic is the record display. Level meters fluctuate with the volume, but you have no way to control mic sensitivity. Again, I'm not sure why Dell bothered to invest in this piece of hardware and the software to support it.

The case that comes with the player is a solid slipcover that obstructs access to most of the controls. The included in-line remote control helps alleviate this problem by providing access to a limited number of controls.

The DJ has eight predefined EQ settings, as well as four-band graphical equalizer that lets you create a custom EQ. Or course, you must upgrade your headphones if you want to actually reap the rewards of tweaking and configuring your EQ settings. The ear-bud headphones that come with the player are inadequate for generating high-quality sound.

Dell has created an excellent player at an attractive price that merits comparison to the iPod. Although the iPod is still the leader of the pack, the DJ isn't far behind.

It's good to see dell actually putting some thought into their designs. I'm always worried when a beige box manufacturer decides to enter the consumer market. Apple, of course, lead the way with the now infamous ipod but in true Apple style, they kept it just applelites for the first year, and only support AAC - not much use to me considering most of my audio library is in MP3 format. and before any of you big-headed applefans give me the 3rd degree about how cool AAC is, my 196k encoded MP3's sound good to my distorted, blood-seeping ears.

anyways, back to my point, I'm glad Dell are giving apple a good run for their money - it will keep steve jobs on his toes!

Sparky -February 18, 2004

This thing looks to better than the Samsung yepp, or should that really be the Samsung Nope? I heard that Napster (the samsung partner) has laid off a bunch of people today. I guess Napsterites still thought that MP3's should be free, where-as the apple people just spend needless money on worthless products (see G5 for a perfect example)

The instant someone equated the word "subscription" with "Napster", there was no other possible ending other than bankruptcy.

No matter what the RIAA says or does, people, in general, will simply not pay for music downloadable from the internet. It's just a fact.

The real assholes here are the geniuses who decided that pouring money into Napster, with the idea of charging people to use it, was a good idea.

Roxi -February 18, 2004

No FM Radio? surely we'd have better use for an FM radio than a mic?

Barry Muldano -February 18, 2004

give me ipod any day. for looks and features, it has to be ipod.

macaddict -February 20, 2004

HEY SPARKY THE IPOD IS NOT AAC ONLY!!! Sorry to shout, but it's only WMA that the iPod does not support. The vast majority of the 3700 songs on my iPod are in MP3 format and they sound great, work great, and everything!

IT Guy -February 20, 2004

Hey Sparky! You might want to check out other sources for your research. The iPod supports AAC and MP3. :)

Gren -February 20, 2004

Spanky - You are correct in pointing out that a competitive market is best for us - the consumers. A strong competitor will keep the manufacturers under pressure to create great products, or die under lackluster sales.

Additionally, I do not think it is helpful to bait proponents of AAC in your post - it just dilutes your otherwise-sharp opinions.

Kap'n Krunk -February 22, 2004

I apologize, I meant Sparky, not Spanky. My best friend's nickname is Spanky, my mistake.

Kap'n Krunk -February 22, 2004

Sorry, but the Samsung YEPP is looking WAY better then this OR the iPOD. YOu can buy a YEPP for about $270 now. That's 20GB, FM radio and FM Transmitter, doesn't REQUIRE MusicMatch or any other program to load music. The iPOD is nice, but at more the $100 more then the YEPP BEFORE you get any accessories (like the FM transmitter) it's not getting my dollars. Besides the problem with the iPOD battery being permanent, non-replaceable and faulty keeps me away. I've had to many friends whose iPOD now only provides 20-30 minutes of music before the battery is dead. And Apple just says "Whoops, time to buy a new one". The Dell looks nice, but it too is too expensive compared to the YEPP. The 20 GB Dell is $299 and then you need to get the FM Transmitter for another $30-40 as well.

To top it all off, Archo has a 40G model that includes WindowsXP MediaCenter 2004 and allows you to take music, pictures, videos, recorded TV and so much more with you for only $499. Outputs to full sized A/V equipment is included.

ITinNV -February 25, 2004

Great points made by all. I love that it supports WMA, the format that I prefer over MP3, due to the fact of a roughly 40-60% reduction in file size, meaning a lot more songs can be stored. However, for the price, I would much rather have a rack or standard size unit to slip in with the rest of my home theater; and maybe a wireless connection to transfer music to and from the unit. Portable is great, but unless your going on a 100-200 mile bike ride, who needs to have 16 hours of music on a walkman? How about a 5-10 Gig model, and drastic reduction in price. They would sell a lot more at an affordable price, rather than a bloated price that only those with nothing better to do with money, or those that must have the latest gadgets will pay for. Hmm, selling to the masses; what a concept...

C. D. Griffin -February 25, 2004

Dell Digital Junkbox can't play AAC, can't use market dominating iTunes Music Store, and evokes laughter when shown in public. People want the best, not knockoffs, except when it operating systems, it seems. The truth is here: http;//www.macdailynews.com/

can the batteries be replaced easily?

mp3lover -March 12, 2004

You can use other programs to transfer songs to the Dell mp3 player. I know this because dell digital jukebox wouldn't work on my computer, no matter how hard I tried to fix it. And I got absolutley no support from dell to help me out. I just tried using Windows Media player and that worked with it fine.

katie -March 23, 2004

The DJ also works with J river Media center which is my fav music player. (version 9.1 and up)

ubiquitous -April 1, 2004

Well, I just received mine and after a few days of use, I am completely happy with the performance of the DJ. Sounds great and easy to use, even in the car and connected to my home stereo. The Music Match software takes a little getting used to, but not terrible. Once you download the patches from Dell, the loading and organzing of music is better. Out of 10, the DELL Jukebox gets an 8.5 from me.

Anthony -April 7, 2004

i got a new computer and its not a dell....and now i need a driver...but the new computer isnt so new..its an old one....with windows ME and now i cant put my songs on the digital jukebox....=(

please help...im bout to go crazy... -April 13, 2004

Anybody know how to move music files around after they have been loaded onto the Jukebox?

Wayne -April 14, 2004

DELL DJ is the perfect blend of quality and price and the most important thing that i would like to inform is that you can now transfer the songs from the DJ to the PC using a very good and user friendly software known as DELL DJ Explorer and it is downloadable from www.support.dell.com songs can be just copied by the click of the mouse and its so simple..... try the DJ explorer and Ull like it.

Khiladi -April 17, 2004

Dell should work with Windows ME it says it can support it and to answer mp3lover question, the battery is so easy to replace. Just unscrew the screws on back and slap in the new battery. heres a link to the instructions http://www.pdainternalbattery.com/mh27988install.html

James -April 21, 2004

The DJ works just fine as an MP3 player, but as for MusicMatch, it's an unbelievably crappy piece of software -- slow and unintuitive, and the bundled crippleware version constantly pesters you to upgrade to the "premium" version.

The DJ is compatible with Napster and I use that instead of MM for most things(esp. since the latest version rips CDs). Sadly, Napster doesn't let you set up playlists.

iTunes is still a better program for managing your library, but I wasn't willing to pay the extra $200 for an iPod. Instead I paid an extra $25 for a Dudebox license from Red Chair software, and I use that to manage the stuff that's already on the DJ (set up playlists, etc.).

Jim -April 25, 2004

I just got a DJ for my birthday and i love it. The only problem i have found is it takes a bit longer than i would like to load the songs on the DJ.

rkallstar802 -April 29, 2004

This is a good product. I have found no errors with it. It is definately not as cool looking as the ipod, but looks is one thing. Performance is another.

Elliott Stanger -April 30, 2004

If you want the absolute best in function right out of the box (and don't care about an extra $150 or so) buy the iPod. I had one and it was stolen. I have had the DJ now for a couple of weeks and it is very nice. Music quality is every bit as good as my iPod was. The only thing I was worried about was all of the negativity I had been reading about MusicMatch. I solved that by getting Dudebox from Red Chair and I couln't be happier. The DJ doesn't look quite as sleek as the iPod and I miss the scroll wheel, but Dell has definitely put out a good product at a remarkable price. If you don't feel like dropping $399 for an MP3 player you will not be sorry with your DJ purchase.

Holmes -May 6, 2004

in ur article it says u cant transfer songs from the dj to ur pc well i found a neet program to fix that for all u dj users, its call dudebox and its from red chair. its a great little app that thought to fix all of the little querks that pisses off the dj users. sence u now can get ur recordings off the dj ur mic doesnt become totally uslless. this product isnt free tho unless u can crack the trail into have full features. http://www.redchairsoftware.com/dudebox/ . i think red chair also has fixes for other playrs like the samsung and ipod. i got my dude box and it really saved all my music that i had on my dj and really wanted on my new pc w/ out the hassle of getting out my massive cd collection or hunting down the rare mp3s online.

czorbin -May 29, 2004

I want a portable music player that I can run with - will use it in marathons so only really need 4 hours of battery life although it would be good not to have to continually recharge the battery. So if portability is the key (i.e. ease of attaching to either a pair of running shorts or strapping to my arm then what is the best one to get?

Bda runner -July 7, 2004

I downloaded some upgrade programs from Dell's website and got a nice Windows Explorer-based program that allows me to manage the DJ quite easily--and for free. I've been completely happy with my DJ for the few months that I've had it. The microphone is rarely useful, but for times of boredom it can be immensely amusing to record my friends. I have two troubles, though: occasionally it will choke on me and freeze up when I try to turn it off. It only takes the push of the reset button, though, and it instantly fixes itself. I've never noticed any residual problems, but I worry that it might get bogged down over time. Still, no errors so far. Second, a very minor issue: every once in a while, it will repeat the song it just played instead of going to the next one. I really don't care though, it's a problem that can be fixed by pushing one button. Neither of these two problems would cause me to not recommend the DJ, though, for an overall great item.

dell junkebox -December 13, 2004

Can i have a link to a GOOD FREE program? for transfering fROM the dj TO the pc? thanks

dave -December 21, 2004

I bought my Jukebox in September. Initially, I really liked it, but that was simply because it was my first MP3 player. Now that I'm using it, I'd like to throw it out the window. Tracks longer than 5-6 minutes cannot be fast forwarded - some kind of glitch only does the first 30 seconds and if you try it again a few minutes in, you get sent back to the 30 second mark. It's a problem if you want to hear just a part of a longer file. After I downloaded the newer software version, nothing worked, so I deleted it and reinstalled my original software. Now I can't add any new tracks. About every 2 hours of playing time, the unit freezes up, requiring me to hit the reset button. Add to these problems the fact that every other time I power it on it spends 5-8 minutes rebuilding the library, and I regret ever buying it. It's junk.

I think you should lower your prices

PATRICIA K. ROSE -January 7, 2005

How could you have the dj15 for $199.00 and the pocket dj which is only 5 gigs for the same $199.00 you realy need to lower the price.

James Fenton -January 9, 2005

I lost my software installation cd. Where could I go to download it? jorge

jorge perez -January 17, 2005

I have a dell digital jukebox 15gb, and also found that it didnt function without the software installation cd. GOOD NEWS you dont need it, all you need to do is download dell's version of musicmatch 9.0. Then you can use it or even use windows media player to upload music to your jukebox, seeing as it will now recognize your handheld device. Note do not call dell thinking that they will help you, because they wont. Those ****ers.

gary -January 17, 2005

I'm perfectly happy with my Jukebox. I shopped around, almost bought the IPOD (which is probably the best on the market) but not worth the extra $200. The 20GB dell was on sale at the time and I'm not regretting buying it. Get good battery life and good sound. The software is a bit irritating, but having the extra cash in my pocket isn't. Sorry Apple, but it takes more than making your equipment look like translucent sex toys to convince me that the extra price is worth it.

Joey -January 18, 2005

hey yeah i have a 20GB Dell Digital Jukebox and i lost you driver disk and i dont ahve a way to put my Jukebox on my computer any way someone can email me the driver application??? Thank's

TJ -January 21, 2005

I have to say your wrong on review if uve noticed theres a program on your pc that comes on cd with dell dj that lets u upload anything off of dj to computer !Go to start/Dell/Dell Dj Explorer and it shows all files on dell dj then you just click and drag into folder ! I frequently use dell dj to record and put on pc i make rap songs and the quality seems to be pretty good for only 64 kbps.

Hey ive heard of several people complaining of music loading and unloading and fixing of names. Three words for you all: Dell DJ Explorer. go to my computer and in there should be a picture of youre dell, click on it go to "Bobs dj" (or watever the name of ur dj is) and go to the music folder. and from there you can organize all that you want (with the right click options, rename, delete whatever...) and you can drag and copy tracks.

Nothing about the article. all about the jike box. Why does the juke box 10, when opened open up in 256 colors, thereby changing the look of my screen and the colors of the juke box are usually lined and many differnt colors. As if the file is corrupt, then at some point it corrects itself not not before making my screen three times its usual size? If you are not the right person to ask thi of please forward it to the right person. This is really making life miserable for me when I try to listen to my CD. or any CDs for that matter. It make me want to scream!!!!! And I do not want it as mt default media player and it won't allow me to make that change. Before I trash it, please direct me in the right direction.

For anyone looking to transfer their music from their DJ to their computer, try Deubox Explorer (formerly called Dudebox Explorer) from www.redchairsoftware.com/deubox/. It allows you to transfer your music very easily from your DJ to the computer. All you do is highlight the files you want to transfer, right click, and choose 'Copy to Computer'. Simple as that. Only problem is that this feature is not available on the free trial version. The full version is $25 and can be purchased through the Red Chair Software site. If you're willing to pay this fee (even for a one time transfer on all your music like me), Deubox is the way to go.

ok this is crap, i have a 20G dell and it has all sorts of bugs.. its easy to take music off of it and i loved it before it started to fail on me.. right now, the power light is on (the one on the power button) but the screen is blank and it wont power up or down... its stuck in limbo.. somewhere between on and off... its also fun when i touch it and get a static shock and the thing resets.. thats a neat trick... too bad it wont pull it out of the parallel demension that it has somehow slipped into at the moment.

My mp3 player wont start up it jus goes straight to firmware problem and thats it. Somebody email me and tell me wat the problem is. Drell15@hotmail.com

I have had Dell DJ's for about 4 years now - I had one fail but I use it about 4 hours minimum every day. It is great. Teh DJ Explorer in Windows is better than I-Tunes by a mile. The 30 gig unit is almost $200 cheaper than the I-Pod that only had 4 gigs of space. I Opted for the extended warranty for 3 years for $40. Exhanges have been prompt and efficient when needed.

If you delete a lot of files it is wise to Rebuild your library periodically (Hold down the play button and hit Reset - then select Clean up - then reboot it) - after all it is a hard and needs defragging just like any other hard drive on the planet for good performance.

You can retrieve files from your Dell DJ as long as they are not tagged with the Copyrighted field set to TRUE or 1.

Use MP3 Tag Studio (Free) to reset all your MP3's to not copyrighted before copying them to the DJ. Then you can copy them. Otherwise you are S-O-L.

Reno -December 1, 2006

I have a dell jukebox 20G, I have had it for about 3yrs, it never gave me a problem. However, when i turn it on now it goes to the rescue mode screen. I have over 3000 songs on it. is that it? is my jukebox history? trashed? it would be a shame to lose all those songs. what can i do to recover my music? Thank you all in advance for any information provided, happy holidays. :)

Here is the link for the manual. Page 54-55 is the troubleshooting. Very informative. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dig_jbox/en/T2485a01.pdf

This link (I hope) is for the software: http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R68802&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=89427

IF not I tried. I got all info off dell.com and typed in dell dj manual in the search field. Then to find the software I typed in dell dj software and went under downloads.

Natalie -December 20, 2006

You can go to dell.com and download the user manual to the Dell Jukebox 15/20. I have referenced it many times when I couldn't figure something out. Also it has answers to troubleshooting problems like the rescue mode screen.

Natalie -December 20, 2006

What I find irritating is that fact you can't find cool accessories like covers or skins for the Gen 1 DJ. All I find everywhere is IPOD crap.

How can I find updated drivers for my Dell Jukebox for Windows Vista

Alfred Srnec -April 4, 2007

When I plug my Dell Dj (20 gig) into the USB drive, it shuts off and doesn't show up anywhere on the computer. Does anyone have any idea what's going on and how I can fix it?

Jaya -April 5, 2007

anyone else have a problem with the headphone jack?

if the headphones move slightly the music becomes really distorted and staticky to the point of not being able to hear it anymore

you can try and fuss with the jack and move it around until it comes in again but while its in your pocket this is extremelly frusturating.

i openend the unit up and do not see anything physically wrong with it, but i'm not an electronics repairman :p

anyone have similiar experiences and were able to fix it?

sudheer -April 26, 2007

Hold play and press the reset button on the miniature hole in the left side on the bottom with a toothpick and it'll go to the emergency screen with 4 options, click cleanup and select yes, wait for it to finish and then select reoot and that might fix the problem. as for the disk error problem, the harddrive on the dj might be usted which means the drive's busted and won't work again

Notice something weird lately when I use the home button on my DJ. It seems like it is scrolling through all the functions of the other button before it goes into the home menu. For example, when I press the home button, it skips to the next song, when I press it again, it pauses, when I press it again... then it goes to the home menu. Sometimes I have to press the home button about 6 times before getting into the home menu. Anyone else experiencing this or anything close to this? Any suggestions? Thank you!
