what are we apple haters? first u say that Itunes is in trouble because of MSN and now Ipod is in trouble because of Dell?
Kazaa hater -December 5, 2003
of course he hates apple. he writes for windows & .net magazine. there is a lot of obvious bias in most of these articles. why label it "news" if it's really a rant by mr. thurrott?
MSsucks -December 8, 2003
There are just so many statements that are wrong in this article I couldn't even know where to begin. 1. The Dell's scrolling is not more intuitive. 2. WMA might be a standard, but it is not the Best one....AAC is MPEG-4 based technology, and sounds far richer than WMA. 3. Of course Battery Life is kind of subjective, because a brand new device is going to have a great battery life, it is after periods of use that really determines how good a battery is. 4. Is Creative Labs really a PC company? Last time I checked they are a peripheral company. I am a long time windows user and have always been frustrated by all of the limitations placed on so many of these devices and software formats. I've got an iPod with my HP xw4100 and it has addressed all of my nitpicks, especially how seamless iTunes works with the iPod. WMA formatted files always sounded very tinty, even on my very nice Klipsch system. AAC files are much nicer sounding and the compression is very good as well. After reading this I was very surprised how blindly it was written.
Jim Calhoun -January 12, 2004
This article is terrible. Thurrott has lost one audience member... He's totally anti-apple everything to the point of making his PC assertions lop-sided and inaccurate. What's the point of reading an opinion article when we already know what your opinion is, Paul? You're so predictable...
James -January 12, 2004
Paul's 'news' sites are not news sites at all. He's an evangelist and has biased views. Go away from here. Go to news.cnet.com for real tech reporting, not some flapjack with a mission.
Moo -January 12, 2004
Shame on the idiots who pay you Paul, and shame on the bigger idiots who subscribe or pay for any of your publications that are so horribly mis informing. fool
Eric -January 12, 2004
You make it sound like Real only uses WMA, it doesn't. It uses its own format, AAC and WMA. More interesting, the music that Real offers on its music site is encoded in the AAC format.

How much did Bill Gates pay you to write your misinformed ignorant comments? Fear as a motivator is amazing. HP makes a smart move and the rest of the Windows world flips at the reality of it. Talk about running scared! Apple has defined the digital hub and is clearly the leader and number 1 innovator. Their hold on it is about as tenuous as Bill Gates position at Microsoft.
Michael -January 14, 2004
i'm actually impressed with the dell dj, i think it will work great with my windows software
justin -February 8, 2004
Screw Ipod. Hows that for biased
Poopie Poppy -February 8, 2004
The DJ has better sound quality, as it is made by Creative, the inventor of the Nomad Zen NX, the best sounding MP3 player on the market. Next is Dell, then maybe iPod...
Mike -February 25, 2004
The Ipod SUX ass compared to the Dell DJ, wow.... the ipod has a game or two on it, ipods are so overpriced too
APPLESUX -May 13, 2004

Ipod and Apple suck compared to Dell DJ and Windows!
Jake -June 6, 2004
Wow! I stumbled across this site and have just read all the posts, so let me get this right. You all dont like the news/review and you all start slagging off each other. At which point am I supposed to be interested or informed with the level of posts going on here. So to put some balance into this forum I am going to tell you about the Dell DJ, because I own one. Please read on. I have purchased a Dell DJ not because I dont like the IPOD I do, but because it was cheaper and all I want it to do is play me some tunes while I am on a beach on holiday. I have found it works very well with Windows and Linux so far (Windows using Jukebox and Linux using LSongs compiled on to any flavour of linux you like). The battery seems to last forever whithout it requiring a recharge. I had it playing in the garden on speaker while doing some work for aproximatly 8 hours and it still had aproximatly half the battery to go. As far as I can tell the Dell DJ is heavier than the IPOD. I did find the menu screen to be easy to use, my wife picked it up and without reading the manual that came with it, manged to play her fav songs within a couple of minutes. Also as far as I can tell the import/export time with the Dell DJ is slower than with the IPOD. Dell uses USB to tranfer MP3s while the IPOD uses Firewire. All I can say is I am happy with this portable MP3 Player. I also apologise if my english spelling is not up to it - Sorry......and finally if you must post to a forum try and keep it to fact or your own experience, then if you choose to agree/diagree with a post then at least a sensible conversation can be made. Windows/Linux user for load of years.
Wazari -June 7, 2004
dude wazari u kick ass thanks man this is what i was looking for not what this bias paul, im glad a user finally came out and spoke about this machine, thanks man
dude -June 9, 2004
You know...I came here looking for a view on the Ipod in comparison to the Dell DJ. Instead, I get a bunch of seriously ignorant people who are either blind Apple or Windows fanatics. For god sakes people, clearly both are systems that work. Get over yourselves and attempt to use this forum for its intended purpose, to rationally and factually discuss a product. Clearly I am going to have to go elsewhere, since the only sensible review I saw here was that of Wazari.

I think both the ipod and dell dj are great but i just went with the dell because most people have ipod and i wanted to expierenced something new and that is the dell dj,come on guys its just a freaken mp3 player stop arguing.

why is the ipod any more expensive than the dell? there has to be a reason...
me -December 5, 2004
i asked for an ipod for christmas and got a gay ass dell dj... cheap ass parents. i dont care what is better or what is compatable... it's all about the brand name... and i want an ipod becuase its hott right now and tons of kids have them and like them. this dell dj better start getting trendy soon so im not the loser of my school. i hate my parents jayson, 19 years old
jayson -December 25, 2004
..... so, youre saying you like to be just like everyone else? you should set the trend of the dell dj being the "hot" item. then trash it, and be the first one on some other "hott" item... being the "loser" of your school just because of your brand name.... means your school is just full of rich snobby assholes whom i wouldn't hang around with anyway
mullett -December 25, 2004
omg ur mad at ur parents for egtting u a dell dj and now ull be a loser at school??? lemme see...ur 19 and still in school..sounds like u been a loser all ur life....anyways i think ipods are great devices.. but i did get a dell dj simply because it was cheaper and now i got it i like the sound quality of it

witch would be better a mini ipod or a dell dj witch one is cheaper and witch one holds more music
paintballa -December 31, 2004
first the dell dj is cheaper and the scroll system is more inutive so i don't need to press a thousand times to get to a song. I also think dell dj's have better sound quality. If in case you Ipod lovers out there didn't kno. After a while youre gonna have to get a replacment battery (they range from 30 bucks-200). I don't kno why the battery dies on ipods but after you use it enough i guess it stiops charging. Dj is on the Oprah's Favorite toy list she claims it the best buy out of any mp3 players.
Bryan -January 2, 2005
Oh yeah i get to use my Windows media player wich makes it so more nice
Bryan -January 2, 2005
LOL...ok first of all we're talking about MP3 players here...so the posts on this site are absurd. There's no reason to get personal. Both play music. Bottom line. Which one is better is subjective and opinions will vary based on individual tastes, so to all the losers on here spouting out vulgarities and insults...eat ass. Now, from my perspective...I bought a Dell DJ in late June and have been more or less satisfied with it, however I do have certain complaints. It is simply too big, and I don't find the interface terribly user friendly. That said, the iPod is overpriced for providing the same functionality as the DJ, and I have found the scroll wheel overly sensitive (however, the click wheel design is much improved, I still occasionally get frustrated by the damn thing). Overall, in hindsight if I had it to do over again, I would go with the iPod. But for now the DJ is sufficient. By Christmas '05 I will likely be in the market for something new, and will re-evaluate what to get at that time. But hell by that time, iPod will have come out with a new, bigger, better, hotter, sexier, sleeker design, and everyone who has the "old" iPod will be bitching about how archaic it is. Or there will be a new player on the market, and everyone - iPod and DJ owners alike...will be whining about how they feel somehow ripped off. It's like cell phones...everyone always wants the newest, hippest, most feature-filled product out there, even if what they currently have is but a few months old. It gets annoying. No one is ever satisfied.
living_veggie -January 7, 2005
Transfer speed USB 2 - 480 mbps Firewire - 400 mbps There are other factors as well - drive speed for example http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,108445,00.asp Firewire 800 will kick ass, but is it necessary? I mean the bottle-neck will be caused by your write-speed on your hd. Anyway, if you are looking for an all-in-one device, get a Treo 650. It plays all the "popular" music formats and I can stream internet radio through my car's dvd player or just listen to it wherever I get a signal. Oh yeah, its a phone and pda too.

I dont know y every one is bitching about the mac os. It is 100 times better than win. I have a mac and i hav never gotten a virus trojan etc... My friend has a windows and he spent over 100$ on anti virus software and he still gets viruses. I hav an ipod and i like it alot. I dont know wut the dj is like so i cant say ne thing about that but dell makes cheap products
pimpmagnum -January 25, 2005
Well here it is 2005, and oh lets look at the data, hmm odd, Dell's Jukebox hasn't taken anymore of the market share. Surprise surprise. I find yet again Paul that your anti-mac commentary is neither informative nor accurate, which begs the question, what is your purpose here?

Johnathon -January 31, 2005
Well, I don't own either, but I'm in the market for an Ipod for my birthday. I checked out the Dell DJ and noticed that the 20GB Dell DJ holds about 4,000 more songs than the IPOD of the same size. The Dell is also cheaper. Personally, I think it's reasonable to sacrifice a heavier unit if it holds more and is cheaper than it's biggest competitor. And to the 19 year old...dude, be greatful that your parents got you anything for Christmas. There are plenty of kids who get NOTHING. Consider yourself lucky that you're going to school (I'm assuming college). I bet your parents are paying for that, too. Wait till you get in the real world and see that no one really cares what brand name mp3 player you have. You are acting like a 13 year old brat. Be thankful for what you have, as it seems to be better in function. Again, I don't own either, so I can't declare one better than the other. I'm just sharing what I've found.
Grant -February 3, 2005
u guys a fuckin retarded who gives what u buy at least as it will play songs and have good sound and is compact and cool lookin who frickin cares what the brand is
retards -February 6, 2005
Look, i have an ipod and my friend has a DJ. I think the ipod rocks because i have a mac and ipod works so well with mac. My friend, who has the DJ, says that the only thing good about the DJ is battery life and price. He wanted an ipod bu got the DJ because it was cheaper. He says now that the DJ isnt even worth what he paid for it. I admit a voice recorder is cool, but you can get a recorder 10 times better which also doubles as a speaker for ipod for only about $20. Also, to Grant. I have news for you. 20 gigs is 20 gigs if its on an ipod or DJ. Who ever told you that DJ holds more must have been high or something. Bottom line, Ipod is better but alot more expensive. If you just want tunes to play on the beach, get DJ. But if you are obsessed with music Ipod is the way to go.
Joe -February 8, 2005
i am the mysterous friend that "joe" has been talking about, and i'm leaving my mark here to say, JOE IS LYING!!!! i never said anything he posted up there. in fact, i love my DJ and it DOES hold more, so stop saying that i'm high, ok. and i said that it is worth lots more than i paid for, so quit lying. and by the way, who (besides you) can say and PROOVE that the bulky ipod recorder is 10X better????? so please stop lying about what i said. Sorry about that derrick, i mean joe, and enjoy getting less for more on your ipod.
Dave -February 8, 2005
Word to everybody here who said it before: an MP3 player is an MP3 player. As long as it looks nice, plays music, and sounds good.why does 10,000 songs or 9,000 songs matter?? chances are youre never gonna fill it up (unless you're a dj or something), so why spend 100 (or more) dollars more for the hottest mp3 on the market when a cheaper, same quality one is just fine??? i don't understand why somebody would spend a hundred dollars more just because it looks nice (nicer than the one that saves you a hundred bucks) i'm not specifically talking DJ vs Ipod here, but if you really want the same thing for a hundred dollars more, go ahead, just remember theres better options, thats what i say
Dave again -February 8, 2005
I'm thinkin about a gettin dell dj and i've beenc reading the articles on both the i pod and The dj and I don't care about size or speed of getting the music onto the device I just want a s*&#! load of music without having to go searching through my hundreds of cd's.
Jack -February 8, 2005
The DJ may hold a few more songs than the Ipod only because the games and calendar on the Ipod take up more room. The difference may only be 10 to 15 songs, maybe. If you like really low quality sound you can fit alot more songs on the DJ....... but why?
Downtym -February 15, 2005
I got my dell dj and so far I fit 66 cds with 800 songs and the sound quality is amazing the dj also has a calendar and is compatible with more than one program where the ipod you absolutely have to have the itunes for $50 cheaper for the same thing (to me it's the same thing) I believe i got the better deal.
Jack -February 15, 2005
How is the bass on the dj?
pete -March 1, 2005
who needs bass i'm a rocker. Rush don't need the extra bass. but the bass is prettty goood for it not being featured.
jack -March 1, 2005
IPOD is an input only device. Dont ever try to get your music out. I.P.O.D. is In.Put.Only.Device ....all your base are belong to pod

well first of all i bet if you hooked up an ipod and an dell dj and hid them and had someone listen you couldnt tell a difference so if they both sound the same and do the same thing why spend 50 more dollars on an ipod when a dell dj holds more music neways so i think you ipod pple are fricking retarded the only reason its so expencive is cuxz it says Apple ooooooooh big whoop. o yeah the scrolling sistem is way better on the dj the ipod switches songs in ur pocket.. I really just want to know which one is better. Sound quality i could care less about, i find it hard that the sound could be that much worse. I was leaning more towards an ipod, but now after reading about the Dj i might go with it just becuase it holds more songs and is cheaper, if any one really feels an ipod is the way to go, comment, becuase I just want something that will last and holds a lot of music
Grant -April 7, 2005
I was thinking of getting an apple ipod. until one of my friends told me about his Dell DJ. I was still going to go with the apple ipod because i thought it was going to be better. I did lots of internet research including reading all the posts that you guys put up and i decided to get a DJ because it was way CHEAPER than ipod, and for what reason? The ipod is pretty cool i admit with all the accesories and things you can do on it. but really guys, the DJ's battery lasts way LONGER and holds way MORE SONGS. Basically when u buy an ipod your just paying for the name and thats it. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DELL DJ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alexonfire -April 12, 2005
Dell Dj is sooooooooo much better than ipod. ipods break to easy and there VERY over priced. whooped de do they have a game or 2. doesnt matter. if u want a good deal on a good mp3 buy a dell dj. they kick ***. and are durable. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DELL DJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. ya so wut i copied that guy. screw u.

Okay all of yu guys are retarded. An mp3 player is an mp3 player. Whether or not its apple or dell. Whats the point! Just buy either one and just forget it. I'm probably gonna get a dell but that doesnt mean that im gonna diss apple. Who cares. YOu guys who are wasting your time getting technical about everything mabey you should be taking that time to be fixing the probelms with yur mp3's instead of juts complaining. cuz thats stupid. it's a material object! get over it. all these complaintes and disses arent gonna solve anything. you guys are all idiots. and geeks to be wasting your time to get to every detail. However ive noticed most that own them are rich *** snobs that i despise for thier snooty-ness. Personally from wut ive read the dj is a superior device anyway. I really wanted the compatibility wit windows on my mp3 playa, and the ipod didnt have it. Overall, im gona buy da DJ. sryt if this isnt helpful, but thats wut i think and im disgusted that y'all r tellin eachother to eat *** cuz ur of different opinions. PEACE

My wife bought me a Dell Pocket DJ for my b-day and I use the DJ explorer (w/ I-tunes) on my Dell PC to drag and drop songs and then can also edit playlists in the DJ explorer.....I have found it to be great, I have about 700 songs and also about 1.5 GB of data on the hard drive (use for work to home data transfer). I listen to the Pocket DJ on the way to work, at work, and on the drive back home and do not need to re-charge for a couple of days. The DELL POCKET DJ is a very good MP3 player and U can use more than one format! **Only thing i want to change is the length of time backlight comes on, if selecting a new set of songs/albums and pushing buttons alot the backlight seems to drain the battery.....

I manage a company IT department and simply was checking this for the difference between an IPOD and a DELL DJ. I was given the DELL DJ from a vendor because we bought their product. I will be sent an IPOD in a few weeks from another vendor for the same reason and I am trying to decide on if i should by the car accessories for the DJ or wait for the IPOD to test first. I am really really pleased with the DELL DJ 20 right now since i am very tecnical and i like to teach my nephews and neices about new technolgy, i was visiting for the memorial day holiday and showed most of my family the DELL DJ 20 and they were all impressed and i found it interesting that these kids of all ages could easily use the DJ without a manual. My sisters are all mad at me because now they all want one, I could care less who the winner of the battle is but I think Dell has a winner so far. I will try to write a review after i try the IPOD but my friends said they thought the IPOD was hard to navigate compared to the DJ when i showed it to them. Hope this helps people who are actually using this as a site for information and not an argument war. Peace

Guys - thanks for the entertainment! Don't think I've laughed so much on a Sunday morning for ages - nice one. Seems like the pocket DJ will be a good choice for me (and cheaper) no offence to the iPOD. Lots of accessories available with both. Only really want to be able to use it in my car (if the CD player could play MP3s I wouldn't even bother) - have to spend $100 on a connector lead and time installing as it seems those FM transmitters are not that good. A few guys mentioned 'what is next?' We all know whatever we buy will be superceded soon. I bet Dell and Apple have been working on the replacement for the last few years and others will enter the market soon, e.g. my $1500 laptop is 2 years old, my wife's $800 laptop is 6 months old and loads better - c'est la vie. My guess is that in a few years you won't need any storage media with you - only an access device for data/ music you're entitled to view/ use, so these MP3 players will then be redundant. Something like a 'wireless' wrist watch or data just streamed through your cell phone is all you'll need.

Hi, I have just bought a Dell Jukebox 30GB for a present, was I wise?????
Me -June 28, 2005
FYI..I dont know which is better but if you want to get a discount on the ipod buy it directly from apple.com. Go to education, choose home school and tell them you qualify and instant discount...For instance, the new 20g white ipod that has color screen lists for $299...With the education discount it costs $269. I really do home school my kids and found this out by accident when I ordered my daughters ipod....

hey does anybody know much about the IPOD's battery life? i mean after 18 hours on the iPod mini do you have to send it back for a new iPod? ah. im so confused!!
j for sure -August 14, 2005
j for sure, the 18 hours means that you get 18 hours of battery life per charge.

I work in a Computer Help Desk position. There are people on staff who have Ipods and also ones that have Dell DJs. The Ipod users are really happy with them, the Dell DJ users (which I am one), not so happy. Those of us that own the DJ find that we need to carry a paper clip around with us so that we can "reset" the DJ when it locks up. The Ipod users never seem to have any problems like that. I guess that we should have questioned why the DJ had a reset button and the Ipod did not. The DJ is okay, but I wish that I had purchased the Ipod - they just seem to be more reliable. And yes, they do seem to have better sound.
tech-support person -September 1, 2005
I have had the dell dj 20 for almost a year now and i am happy with it. it has only fozen once and the reset button un-freezes it right away. How hard it it to keep a paper clip in your wallet just in case it does,(it ain't that hard). For a hundred bucks cheaper it does the same darn thing...plays music. the only difference is stores supply the ipod and makes it easier for people to buy them. and there are more accessories available for the ipod.

Can some one comment on the battery life between Dell DJ 20 GB and Apple Ipod 20 GB. I think apple claims it to be 15 hours while Dell claims it to be 12 hours. Are these figures true. I am looking for a cheap mp3 player that lasts longer with good battery life. Is Dell DJ a good choice in long term use say 1-2 years as compared to Apple IPod. Thanks.

Sept 12 was my birthday and i recieved a dell dj 30 it is bad a** and i have had no problems ok to clear up the whole thing the dell dj 15,20,30 are much beter than the I-pod i did some research on both and the I-POD only holds 5000 songs...the dell dj 15=6500 songs..dell dj 20= 9900 songs and the delldj 30 holds 15,000 songs and Dell products have always come through with self suficient products on the other hand the I-POD on the other hand just works with MAC programs,I-TUNES, and Rapsody i think but u cant pull any music of the system so for everyone who mistakenly puts something on there or a virus with a music file is screwed. The Dell DJ has much better sound quality also very good bass and keeps you thumpin.the I-POD has a good sound but u cant hear it when ur in class or in a car or something unless u have some good headphones that are lodged in ur ear.Im tryin to not Dis the I-POD but in my own oppinion the Dell DJ 20 or 30(30 is better but ull never filll it up thats the great thing) and all u people who keep arguing !!!!STFU!!! ok and that guy Downtym u are so wrong and if yall have any problems look it up bioches!!!!!PEACE OUT!!!!!!

CRYSTALMETH -September 28, 2005
Steven H you stupid bastard. 30 gigs is 30 gigs, ipod or dell dj. A number of songs is a terrible way to measure how much an mp3 player can hold. Different kbps qualities and different song lengths provide thousands of different filesizes. Just because they say the dell dj can hold more songs, is probably that they are counting low quality 64kbps wma files. I use 320kbps mp3s for almost everything on my dell dj, and I still have plenty of room. I only have about 300 songs on there right now, but that doesn't mean I'm not taking up a lot of harddisk space. Some songs are 8-10 minutes, and I have 3 compilations all about an hour long. Long story short: Never, EVER pay attention to the "number of songs" a player can hold. It is subjective and extremely misleading. The only objective way to compare is in gigabytes.

I bought myself a Dell DJ20 last Christmas and it's the best Christmas present I ever got. (picking your own **** helps) I admit that I originally intended to buy an IPOD because of all the hype. What I was looking for was a player that would hold a shitload of songs, sound good, and not crap out on me in a month. I had tried out a friend's IPOD and found the navigation to be awkward at best. When I mentioned that I was considering a Dell DJ he was very negative saying they were unreliable. (considering he had sent his IPOD back 3 times for servicing in 9 months I hate to think what he considered unreliable) To make a long story short I bought the DJ because, for the price, it could hold a lot more songs. I use it CONSTANTLY and everywhere. It has only frozen up on me once in almost a year (easy reset with a paperclip), the battery life is excellent, and the sound is excellent. It may be a few ounces heavier than an IPOD but who cares? It fits in my pocket and I can run with it without any problems. I really have no complaints at all and I intend to buy another this Christmas as a gift for my daughter, (she is 16 and I offered to get her an IPOD instead if the brand name was important to her but she has friends with IPODS and after using my DJ prefers the DJ)
jen -November 4, 2005
Thank you for a helpful response, Jen. I'd like to add that I've worked with both DJs and Ipods and just the fact that the DJ uploads files in WMA format makes it hella easier to operate. Itunes is a royal pain in the ***.

ipodnotwaytogo -November 30, 2005
i cant believe this. firstly, how many songs it holes... it all depends on the file sizes! if you have 2X 20gb devices, one has small files on and the other has larg files on one will hold less than the other. who cares what brad it is jayson you spoilt ****, like someone else said some kids get nothing. your a shithead

Deciding to get a dj or an ipod should not be based on someone's say-so of "this is better, this sucks". One needs to go study both of products themslef, and if they are using this site as an attempt to do just that, that they need more info then "apple sucks" and "dell sucks". They both have their pros and cons. The dell's cheaper and holds mroe songs. The Ipod is sleeker and lighter and has a famous brand name (which I personally think is stupid, to buy something just because of the name and that everyone else has it....however, because everyone has it, the ipod is easier to get help with) However, the dell dj is very easy to set up and use. And then there's yet another issue...music. I do not reccommened limewire for music because it is a fileshairing program, you can become an uploader, and pending on how one interupts the law, is illegal. So, if you intend to use limewire any how, this might not be important to you. Here's the deal though, with an ipod, you have to pay 99 cents a song, but then you OWN the song, and can transfer to cd and have it forever. With the dell, you can buy music for 99 cents a song, burn it, and have it forever and OWN it, but you can also RENT the music, unlimimted for 15 dollars a month and napster and rhapsody and 5 dollars with yahoo (though with yahoo, since it's still rather new, several problems were experienced). After a while several Ipod owners experience a problem, which can usually be fixed by reformatting, but still is none the less, a problem. With the dell, if it freezes, all you have to do is press the reset button with a paper clip and any problem is fixed. With an Ipod, the music (when you go to play it) loads faster. Bottom line: If you listen to only one genre of music and not that many artist, spend the extra 50 bucks, but an ipod, talk to people for help, and use Itunes and pay 99 cents a song. If you listen to a lot of different music and artist, buy a dell, they're cheaper, hold more songs, use their online videos for help and get a program like rhapsody and pay 15 dollars a month for all the many songs you listen too.
brooke -December 27, 2005
Hmm....tough one, i chose the ipod because of the great feedback i have had from owners of the ipod, it sounds great and the battery life is enough to last you about a week listening to music/ 2 hours watching video. The ipod is always on demand, so when a new ipod comes out you can quite easily sell your ipod on ebay or trademe for roughly the retail price, and upgrade. So all in all I think the ipod is fantastic, it looks great and is really handy and easy to use. Dont know must about the dell dj but my ipod kicks ***.....Thats aswell as it being moral to buy an ipod over a dell, microsoft sucks balls, ive already spent alot of money on microsoft products usually to be disapointed....time for a change (as dell recommends microsoft software for their pcs i put them in the same category as "microsoft").

Yes I am wondering If it is better to buy an Ipod Or An Dell DJ. I am wanting the best sound quality and the most space available. Which would be the best one?
Matthew Thompson -January 15, 2006
I both have an iPod and Dell DJ and I would say that they are both good for me. There are some differences though. If you want a better sound quality then get the Dell DJ because it has a better sound. iPod also have a good sound but I think the DJ has a louder one. What I only hate about the iPod is it doesn't support WMA and other players.

In addition to the moronic prediction by Thurott and co.. this page proves that if you leave a page with ability to comment long enought the IQ of the posters changes inversly to the length of time since the article was published. Present company excluded - ofcourse :-) 1. Its March 2006 - iTunes is 80% of legal downloads. 2. iPod is 70% of all Music players 3. Dell DJ is extinct - Dell actually bought Alienware to "look" cool! 4. MS Windows is delayed again by a year - bloatware with 50 million lines of code! 5. Apple Stock is at $65 - MS is at $25 and Dell at $35 - snicker! 6. Thurott is still writing tech columns knocking Apple - some things never change! AM

...About Ipod being "cool." I go to a rich, yuppie, private school. I am 1 of 15 kids who doesn't have an Ipod & I am happy.I have a DJ 20 & adore it. Something being more popular doesn't make it better. Usually, popular **** sucks balls. Windows Media Player>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Itunes, Dell>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ipod, & ****>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Apple. My grandfather is the VP of a local bank's computer department. He's always hated apple. Thus, mi madre bought me a DJ. DJs have better sound, longer battery, & longer life in general. My friend's Ipod DIED 4 months after she bought it. Her sister's died the month after hers did. My other friend's Ipod is getting fixed for the third time. He bought his 2 months ago & is a major computer geek & he just couldn't make it work. If you're fully evolved & are thinking with a human brain, BUY ANY MP3 PLAYER OVER APPLE IPOD. You have been warned. That's my review. "'Cause America can, & America can't say no. & America does, if America says it's so, it's so."

I totally agree with Dave. A lot of people want to buy a certain MP3 player because it's "hot" on the market. I'm pretty sure most people don't fill up their MP3 player to the max! I have a Dell DJ and I personally find it more efficient than the iPod. Yes, the iPod has its benefits, but it is also highly overrated.
KL -June 18, 2006
Anybody would surely have to be drinkin douche water if they think that buying an over priced ipod is a cool thing to do. I have a Dell dj 20 and itis so much more effecient and holds more music. Oh well! A fool and his money are easily parted.
stan -July 31, 2006
I've had my dell dj 20gb for almost a year and a half. Its everything you need in an "mp3 player". Ipods are really a fad going on right now, it will soon die off. Ipods are more of a fashion statement these days, its ridiculous. If its between a dell dj or an ipod. Dell Dj will make you proud, price wise, easy to use, WMP compatible. I really don't like i tunes at all. If something happens to your computer all your songs go along with it. Dell is the way too go, IMO.

Which should i get a ipod or a mp3 player??? which holds more songs???
brandy -November 8, 2006
So this is what happens when you let anyone post on a site without even having to fill a stupid site-registration-query. This artical is nearly 3 years old! I actually read about the first quarter of comments, then gave up and skipped to the bottom. Here's some things I picked up from this: the writer of this article was way wrong about the dell dj killing ipods because it's now nearing 2007, and ipods are still very popular while dell dj's are not being produced any more. a lot of people oversimply their judgement of mp3 players by narrowing it down to two things: capacity and price. While these are the two most important factors, I find it helpful to also consider size of the player (which ipods have seemed to master (which may be why they jack up the price)), the audio format and media player the mp3 player uses (mostly to see whether it uses any media players you might be accustomed to). There's a bunch of other factors that get realy nit-picky like sound-quality of the player, ect. I find these details to be extremely minute between mainstream mp3 players, the kind of details that most (if not all) human ears can't really distinguish. As far as my personal experience goes, I own an ipod. It's the only apple product I own. For a while I wished I had bought something else (the creative zen like is looking really good and well priced as well, and I haven't even checked out Microsoft's new mp3 player yet). Mainly, I don't like itunes that much. It's made for macs, and I can tell. BUT I found another media-player alternative between the two binopolies: macintosh and microsoft. Winamp! What's great about winamp is that it's own users create plug-ins to make Winamp Media Player more applicable to, well, any thing that's thrown at it. I found a great alarm clock plug-in for winamp; there are plug-ins written for any portable device whether mac or pc. Of course winamp has it's own set of problems, but they are always in the process of being fixed. All in all, it's a great media player for those looking for a sane alternative between itunes and wmp.

Is the Dell Jukebox compatible with all the docking accesories that are out there for Ipods ? I'm talking about home stereos and speaker systems. Thanks.

Well I got my ipod, a 30 gig black video, in 2005 for my birthday, and my birthday's coming up in a few weeks and it's still going strong. I'm pleased with my ipod even though it's alot cheaper now than a year ago. The battery life is great, the ability to play videos is nice, scrolling with the wheel is easy (for anyone with a brain), it holds many songs as of now i have 8 gigs of music on it and 1 gig of videos, you can store/view pics, also one thing about iTunes, ive heard people say it sucks, but i haven't had ANY problems with iTunes, and i think that anyone with half of a brain can operate itunes with ease. Overall i think the ipod is a great player, and that apple make some pretty good quality products, actually im writing this on my 1st gen imac 333mhz, also still running strong, :D

I own both a Dell DJ and an Ipod, and I'd have to say that Dell DJ is WAY better. I've already managed to kill 2 ipods since i've had my Dell DJ, one i dropped, the other just died..Dell DJ is FAR MORE durable then an ipod, plus it holds alot of music for the price.

I've dropped my DJ several times, once while rollerblading. It still works fine. When I bought it, it was a great amount of memory for a very low price (20G for $200, shipped). Although now I'd like to get a 4 gig nano for podcasts and audiobooks. I'll never get rid of the DJ, but I need something smaller to carry around on a daily basis.

How do you spot a ******??? look for the queer azz apple/mac/iDILDO he's showing off. BTW, the only way to look for an iDILDO is to check his rectum.

Thank Heaven that the reign is soon to be over i have a dell dj and i have always hated the ipods bc they are a ripoff, dell hasd better support and just plain longer lasting products. I have had my DJ run over by a car thrown from a third story window and sat on aloooooot (none of these could an ipod hold up to, as my fiance has one that would break if you pressed the pad too hard lol) and whats funny is im upkloading more songs onto it right now

The Dell DJ (Gen 1)is indestructible.I've dropped it on concrete 30+ times, filled it full of saw dust with out so much as a skip. Once I soaked it in chocolate milk for hours. After I discovered the chocolate milk I took it apart and hosed it off then let it dry in the sun. Still works perfect. I use it all day at work. I'm in construction and it holds up> On battery life, I had it for 3 years and it will still play for 20+ hours on random play. Music Match sucks but it works good half the time and there's other software you can use instead. $250 in 2004 now $60 +or- on ebay. Don't have an IPOD so I can't attest to it's durability but DJ is hardcore.
